In early 2008 it was announced that Italy had replaced Serbia in the European Shield. Serbia were elevated to a higher level with Russia and Lebanon after easily winning the 2007 shield and doing well in the World Cup qualifying matches. Italy were one of the newest European nations to adopt rugby league with the Veneto 9s the only RL tournament in the country at the time.

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. For sponsorship reasons the league is known as the Vodacom United Rugby Championship in South Africa, and the BKT United Rugby Championship in the competition's other territories, the split branding mirroring the format previously adopted in Super Rugby. The Russia national rugby league team, nicknamed The Bears, represents Russia in international rugby league tournaments and other rugby league fixtures. The Bears, played their first fixtures against two British club sides: York Wasps and Fulham RLFC. In 2013, Russia became a full member of the Rugby League International Federation.

Rugby Viadana 1970 is an Italian rugby union club based in Viadana. The club was established in 1970, and has since won the Italian championship in 2002, and the Coppa Italia three times. They also compete in European rugby competitions and were runners-up in the European Shield in 2004. Viadana plays in yellow and black. The club did not compete professionally between 2010 and 2012 as they focused their efforts on Aironi. Aironi was based at Viadana's home ground and represented a number of regional teams in the multi-national Celtic League. The FIR withdrew Aironi's licence to play at the end of the 2012, so Viadana reformed as a professional team will play in Italy's top division, the National championship of Excellence, from the 2012–13 season and currently in the Top12.

The Italy national rugby league team represents Italy in rugby league football. Belgrade and Novi Sad are the two main bases for the sport, producing most of the country's players. The most successful Serbian club side are the Dorćol Spiders who have won the most premierships. The other club Red Star Belgrade who defeated Dorćol in the deciding game to claim the minor premiership.

Rugby league is a minor sport in Germany. The national governing body for the sport, Rugby League Deutschland, is an associate member of the Rugby League European Federation. The country's national team are regular competitors in the European Shield, winning the competition in 2006 and 2011.

The Slavic Cup is a rugby league football competition first competed for in 2006. The first winners of the Slavic Cup were Serbia. The competition was organized as part of the continuing effort to spread the game of rugby league throughout the many nations of Europe. In 2007, Slavic Cup match was played as a part of European Shield tournament, in which the both holders Serbia and Czech Republic are taking part, with Serbia defended the Cup. 2008 saw new format of Slavic Cup, with both nations capital selections taking on each other in one match held in Prague.
