The 2008 World University Boxing Championships took place in Kazan, Russia between September 19-28, 2008. [1] The championship was staged in eleven weight categories. 94 boxers and 38 officials from 16 countries participated at the championship. [2]
Bronze medals are awarded to both losing semi-finalists.

Lennox Claudius Lewis is a boxing commentator and former professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 2003. He is a three-time world heavyweight champion, a two-time lineal champion, and the last heavyweight to hold the undisputed championship. Holding dual British and Canadian citizenship, Lewis represented Canada as an amateur at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics; in the latter, he won a gold medal in the super-heavyweight division.
The Ring is an American boxing magazine that was first published in 1922 as a boxing and wrestling magazine. As the sporting legitimacy of professional wrestling came more into question, The Ring shifted to becoming exclusively a boxing-oriented publication. The magazine is currently owned by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Enterprises division of Golden Boy Promotions, which acquired it in 2007. Ring began publishing annual ratings of boxers in 1924.
Chess boxing, or chessboxing, is a hybrid sport that combines two traditional disciplines: chess and boxing. Odlanier Solís beat Luis Ortiz multiple times in the amateurs, never losing to him.

Abdelhafid Benchabla is an Algerian amateur boxer. He represented Algeria at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, and the 2012 Summer Olympics and is the current World Series of Boxing Light heavyweight champion.
Roberto Cammarelle is an Italian amateur boxer, best known for winning the World Amateur Boxing Championships in 2007 (Chicago) and 2009 (Milan) as a super heavyweight and a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He won a silver medal in 2012 London Olympic Games, losing to Anthony Joshua.

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom is an Indian amateur boxer, politician, and former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. She is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer to win eight World Championship medals. Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, she was the only Indian female boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the flyweight (51 kg) category and won a bronze medal. She had also been ranked as the world's No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (amateur) (AIBA). She became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea and is the first Indian female boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is also the only boxer to become Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times. Mary Kom won the 51kg gold in President's Cup in Indonesia.
Barry John Hugman is an English sports author, statistician and historian. He was born in Hampstead Garden Suburb, Middlesex, in 1941 and educated at Clarks College, Finchley. Having spent ten years concentrating on a business career he decided to produce what was called at the time the biggest job in football statistics–collating and presenting the records of all men who had played in the Football League since 1946. He has since gone on to publish many other works, a large number of which are recognised by the authorities as definitive sources in their field.
Shiva Thapa is an Indian boxer. He is employed with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. He is supported by Olympic Gold Quest and Anglian Medal Hunt Company, Shiva Thapa participated in the 2012 London Olympics, and was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics. Shiva Thapa is ranked 3rd in the bantamweight category in the AIBA Men's World Ranking. He is the third Indian to clinch gold at the Asian Games. Shiva Thapa is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships. He is now an Account Manager with Midland Credit management. Thapa has been elected as a member of the International Boxing Association (amateur) Athletes Committee.
Ferhat Pehlivan is a Turkish amateur boxer competing in the light-flyweight division. The 1.68 m tall boxer at 49 kg (108 lb) was a member of the Karnet S.K. in Akçaabat, Trabzon before he transferred to Fenerbahçe Boxing. He is coached by Altar Kalkışım. He is a student at the Atatürk University in Erzurum.
Kadri Kordel is a Turkish amateur boxer in the flyweight (51 kg) division. In 2005 he fought at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Mianyang, China in the under 48 kilogram division. He was beaten in the quarterfinals. He is currently a member of the Fenerbahçe Boxing squad. A native of Kütahya, he is coached by Muammer Sağlam.
Mohamed Flissi is an Algerian boxer. He represented Algeria at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom and at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He qualified to represent Algeria again at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Frazer Clarke is a British professional boxer. He won bronze in Tokyo at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
