The 2014 Ottawa Redblacks season was the first season for the team in the Canadian Football League. The Redblacks are the third CFL franchise to play in the city of Ottawa, and the first since the suspension of the Renegades in 2006. The Redblacks finished the season in fourth place in the East Division with a 2–16 record and were eliminated from playoff contention after a week 16 loss to the BC Lions. [1]
The Redblacks signed their first three players on November 28, 2013. Ottawa signed wide receiver Fred Rouse, defensive back/safety Nick Turnbull and defensive end DiMetrio Tyson. [2] Leading up to the 2013 CFL Expansion Draft the Redblacks signed a number of players including; defensive back Jerrell Gavins, [3] quarterback Matt Faulkner [4] and running backs Jordan Roberts, [5] Michael Hayes, and Eric O'Neal. [6]
In February 2014, following the Expansion Draft, the Redblacks made a series of significant signings including the acquisition of former MOP quarterback Henry Burris, [7] former defensive player of the year Jovon Johnson and LB Malik Jackson. [8]
The 2013 CFL Expansion Draft was a three-round CFL draft held on December 16, 2013, which assign players from existing CFL teams to the new Ottawa team. The structure of the draft was announced on January 19, 2011, which described one round for selecting import [Note 1] players and two rounds for selecting non-import [Note 1] players. [9] Ottawa selected three players from each of the eight existing teams for a total of 24 players. Ottawa was allowed to select eight import players and 16 non-import players with quarterbacks, kickers and punters eligible within their respective import/non-import [Note 1] categories. Ottawa was able to select a maximum of two quarterbacks and one kicker/punter, but not select any two of these three players from the same team.
Overall, 24 players were selected in the draft, including two quarterbacks, three receivers, one running back, two fullbacks, six offensive linemen, six defensive linemen, three linebackers, and one defensive back. Only one pending free agent was selected, with Rory Kohlert's contract expiring February 15, 2014. The selections were announced live at cfl.ca on December 16, 2013. [10]
The 2013 CFL Draft took place on May 6, 2013. Despite not playing in the 2013 season, the Redblacks picked last in the first four rounds of the draft, with selections being limited to 18 NCAA redshirt juniors. [11] [12] These players were not eligible to sign for the 2013 season, but may sign with Ottawa for this season.

The 2014 CFL Draft took place on May 13, 2014. The Redblacks began with the first pick in each of the seven rounds, but traded the first overall pick to Calgary for Jon Gott. [13] They re-entered the first round after trading Kevin Glenn to the BC Lions and moved positions in the first and second round following a trade with the Montreal Alouettes. [14] They also moved down in the third round after trading for Justin Phillips. [15] The club also had two bonus picks at the end of the draft, which brought their total to nine.

On March 11, 2014, the Redblacks announced that they would hold a mini-training camp April 9–10, 2014 at Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Virginia. At this camp, the entire team roster would participate in drills and work out under the supervision of head coach Rick Campbell and the Redblacks football operations staff. [16]
On February 10, 2014, it was announced that the Ottawa Redblacks would play their "home" pre-season game at Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field against the Roughriders on June 14, 2014. Ottawa was the home side of the field and the team was introduced as the home team. It was further announced that the Redblacks would have a bye for the first week of the regular season and then play away games at Edmonton and Winnipeg before their home opener in Week 4 on July 18 against the Toronto Argonauts. These arrangements were made to accommodate for any delays that might be incurred due to the construction of TD Place Stadium.
This was the Redblacks' inaugural season in the Canadian Football League. [17]

Drew Tate is an American gridiron football coach and former player. He is the receivers coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football as a quarterback at the University of Iowa and was signed by the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Tate has played professionally for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks in the CFL. He was a defensive analyst at Coastal Carolina University in 2018, before coming out of retirement to rejoin the Roughriders. On December 17, 2018, Tate retired from playing and was named quarterbacks coach for the BC Lions the following day. He has also been a coach for the TSL Alphas, and at UT Martin and the University of Northern Iowa.
Jovon Johnson is a former professional Canadian football defensive back. He was the winner of the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 2011 while with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, becoming the first defensive back to win the award in the league. He is also a two-time CFL All-Star and five-time CFL East Division All-Star. In addition, he was a member of the 2007 Saskatchewan Roughriders that won the Grey Cup, though he spent little time on the active roster and finished the last game on the practice roster. He has also been a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Erie RiverRats, Ottawa Redblacks, and Montreal Alouettes.

Keith Shologan is former a defensive tackle in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football at UCF. Shologan has also been a member of the San Diego Chargers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Ottawa Redblacks and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Joseph Eppele is a former Canadian football offensive lineman. He was drafted second overall by the Toronto Argonauts in the 2010 CFL Draft, being the first offensive lineman taken while being ranked fifth overall by the CFL's Amateur Scouting Bureau. He played college football for the Washington State Cougars.
Moton Hopkins is a former professional Canadian football defensive tackle. He was signed by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL) as a free agent in the spring of 2010. He played college football at the University of Tulsa. He has also been a member of the Montreal Alouettes (CFL).

Bradley Sinopoli is a former Canadian football wide receiver who played for nine years in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was originally a quarterback with the Calgary Stampeders before being converted to wide receiver in 2013. He then joined the Ottawa Redblacks where he was twice named the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian, was named an East Division All-Star three times, and a CFL All-Star in 2018. He won two Grey Cup championships, after winning with the Stampeders in 2014 and with the Redblacks in 2016, the latter of which he was also named the game's Most Valuable Canadian.
Justin Capicciotti is a former Canadian football defensive lineman. He was most recently a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the Simon Fraser Clan and was ranked as the 13th best player in the Canadian Football League’s Amateur Scouting Bureau final rankings for players eligible in the 2012 CFL Draft. He was selected 14th overall in the 2012 Draft by the Edmonton Eskimos.
The 2014 CFL season was the 61st season of modern-day Canadian football. It was the 57th Canadian Football League season. Vancouver hosted the 102nd Grey Cup on November 30. The league expanded to nine teams with the addition of the Ottawa Redblacks, giving the CFL nine teams for the first time since the 2005 season. As a result of the expansion, the schedule shifted to a 20-week regular season plus three weeks of playoffs ; the season started on June 26, 2014.
