Bieter was initially regarded as the strongly favored candidate, as he was seeking a fourth term and had won by a three-to-one margin in the 2011 election. [2] Sven Berg, writing for the Idaho Statesman, wrote in September 2015 that "There might be a current of dissatisfaction with Bieter running through parts of Boise, but come election time, it hasn’t yet showed up in the votes. Beating him will take a lot of work." [2]

Boise is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Idaho and is the county seat of Ada County. As of the 2020 census, there were 235,684 people residing in the city. On the Boise River in southwestern Idaho, it is 41 miles (66 km) east of the Oregon border and 110 miles (177 km) north of the Nevada border. The downtown area's elevation is 2,704 feet (824 m) above sea level.
Ada County is located in the southwestern part of Idaho, United States. As of the 2021 United States census estimate, the county had a population of 511,931, making it by far the state's most populous county; it is home to 26.8% of the state's population. The county seat and largest city is Boise, which is also the state capital. Ada County is included in the Boise metropolitan area. The Ada County Highway District has jurisdiction over all the local county and city streets, except for private roads and state roads. In the interior Pacific Northwest east of the Cascade Range, Ada County ranks second in population, behind Spokane County, Washington.
David Harold Bieter is an American politician and attorney who served as mayor of Boise from 2004 to 2020. He is the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. According to The New York Times, he was the only Basque-speaking mayor in the United States as of 2012. His father, Pat Bieter, was also a local politician who served in the Idaho House of Representatives.
H. Brent Coles is an American politician who served as mayor of Boise, Idaho from 1993 to 2003. Coles resigned from office after accepting an illegal trip to the 2002 Winter Olympics from an insurance company. Coles was a candidate in the 2019 Boise mayoral election, placing fourth out of seven candidates in first round of voting.

Branden John Durst is a former politician from Boise, Idaho. Durst represented Idaho's 18th Legislative District in the Idaho Senate from 2012 to 2013. He previously represented Idaho's 18th Legislative District in the Idaho House of Representatives from 2006 to 2010 as a Democrat, until his resignation from the Idaho Legislature in 2013 for illegally representing his district while living in another state. He was the youngest member of the Idaho Senate. Durst switched parties in 2016 and registered as a Republican as of November 2020. Durst announced in January 2020 that he would be a Republican candidate for Idaho State Superintendent of Public Instruction. He ultimately placed a distant second in the primary, earning about 34% of the vote.
Elliot Werk is a Democratic politician from Boise, Idaho in the United States. From 2002 until 2015 he served as the Idaho State Senator from District 17, which is based in the Boise Bench neighborhood.
Chuck Winder is a Republican member of the Idaho Senate. He serves as the president pro tempore of the Idaho Senate and previously served as the majority leader. He is married to Dianne Winder; the couple has two children.

The Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial is a .81 acres (0.33 ha) cenotaph complex and educational park in Boise, Idaho near the Boise Public Library and the Greenbelt, the centerpiece of which is a statue of Anne Frank; it is jointly maintained by the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights and the Boise Department of Parks and Recreation, and is the only human rights memorial in the U.S. Designed by Idaho Falls architect Kurt Karst, a sapling of the Anne Frank Tree and quotations from some sixty notables and unknowns are prominent installations. It also features one of the few installations where the full text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is on permanent public display. The park has been recognized and accepted by the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. It was thoroughly renovated in September 2018, with an outdoor classroom and a new sculpture, "The Spiral of Injustice."
Jack's Urban Meeting Place (JUMP) is a creative activity center in Boise, Idaho, with facilities for public meetings, workshops, and exhibition space. An amphitheater and multi-purpose studios for art, movement, and cooking are included. A collection of 52 tractors are on display at various locations in the facility.

John Patrick "Pat" Bieter was an American politician and educator who served as a member of the Idaho House of Representatives from 1996 until his death in 1999.
