The 2018 FIFA World Cup was an international men's football tournament, that took place between 14 June and 15 July 2018 in Russia. [1] The competition was structured in the typical round-robin style during the initial group stages, with the top two teams of each group qualifying to the further stages. [2] France [3] and Croatia [4] went to the finals and fought for the championship.

Contents

The statistics within the tournament include: goals, assists, scores, wins and losses record, match awards, squad records, disciplinary issues, statistics accumulated over multiple world cups, the overall results and the stadium statistics. Matches that were decided by penalty shoot-outs were counted as draws. Any records set during the 2018 FIFA World Cup covered under the appropriate headings for the specific record. [5]

There were 169 goals scored in 64 matches, for an average of 2.64 goals per match.

Twelve own goals were scored during the tournament, doubling the record of six set in 1998. [6] Goals scored from penalty shoot-outs are not counted towards an individual player's goal count. [7]

An assist is awarded for a pass leading directly to a goal. [9] In the 2018 World Cup there were a total of 105 assists, with no outright leader as 16 players had 2 assists in the tournament.

Scoring

There were a total of 169 goals in 64 matches [10] in Russia. [5] Harry Kane was awarded the Golden Boot. [11] There were a record 12 own goals in the 2018 World Cup, with the earliest goal coming in the 1st minute from Mathias Jørgensen during the game of Denmark against Croatia, [12] and the latest goal coming from Neymar for Brazil against Costa Rica in the 97th minute. [13]

In total, only four players were sent off in the entire tournament, the fewest since 1978. [85] International Football Association Board technical director David Elleray stated a belief that this was due to the introduction of VAR, since players would know that they would not be able to get away with anything under the new system. [86]

Overall results

The French national team won the 2018 World Cup, defeating Croatia by a score of 4–2, making it the highest scoring World Cup Final since 1966 when England defeated West Germany 4–2. [88] The third place playoff took place between Belgium and England, with Belgium coming out 2-0 victors. [89]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2018 FIFA World Cup</span> Association football tournament in Russia

The 2018 FIFA World Cup was the 21st FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for national football teams organized by FIFA. It took place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 2010. It was the eleventh time the championships had been held in Europe, and the first time they were held in Eastern Europe. At an estimated cost of over $14.2 billion, it was the most expensive World Cup ever held until it was surpassed by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup was the 17th FIFA U-17 World Cup, a biennial international football tournament contested by men's under-17 national teams. Organised by FIFA, the tournament took place in India between 6 and 28 October 2017, after the country was awarded the hosting rights on 5 December 2013. The tournament marked the first time India have hosted a FIFA tournament and the first Asian country to host U-17 World Cup since United Arab Emirates in 2013. The attendance for this World Cup was a record 1,347,133 surpassing China's record in 1985 with 1,230,976.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 FIFA Women's World Cup</span> 2019 edition of the FIFA Womens World Cup

The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup was the eighth edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup, the quadrennial international Women's association football championship contested by 24 women's national teams representing member associations of FIFA. It took place between 7 June and 7 July 2019, with 52 matches staged in nine cities in France, which was awarded the right to host the event in March 2015, the first time the country hosted the tournament. The tournament was the first Women's World Cup to use the video assistant referee (VAR) system. This was the second and last edition with 24 teams before expanding to 32 teams for the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

The tournament was hosted by Poland between 23 May and 15 June 2019. This was the first FIFA tournament hosted by Poland; the country had hosted UEFA international football events in the past including the UEFA Euro 2012 with Ukraine and the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Tunisia has participated six times in the FIFA World Cup, the biggest men's football event in the world, in 1978, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018 and 2022. The 2002 FIFA World Cup was played from 31 May to 30 June 2002, in South Korea and Japan. This was the seventeenth World Cup, which is held every four years between countries in a round-robin format, where there are eight groups of four teams who play each other once with the top two teams from each group going through to knock-out stages with a single winner. <span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup</span> International futsal event

The 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup was the ninth edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup, the quadrennial international futsal championship contested by the men's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament was held in Lithuania. It marked the first FIFA tournament ever hosted by Lithuania and the third Futsal World Cup hosted in Europe; the others being 1989 in the Netherlands and 1996 in Spain.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup was an international football tournament held in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018. The 32 national teams involved in the tournament were required to register a squad of 23 players, including three goalkeepers. Only players in these squads were eligible to take part in the tournament.

The knockout stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup was the second and final stage of the competition, following the group stage. It began on 30 June with the round of 16 and ended on 15 July with the final match, held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. The top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage to compete in a single-elimination style tournament. A third place play-off was also played between the two losing teams of the semi-finals.

Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup took place from 16 to 26 June 2018. The group consisted of Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, and Nigeria. The top two teams, Croatia and Argentina, advanced to the round of 16.

Group G of the 2018 FIFA World Cup took place from 18 to 28 June 2018. The group consisted of Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, and England. The top two teams, Belgium and England, advanced to the round of 16, and went on to meet each other again in the third-place play-off.
