The 2019 AT&T strike was a labor strike involving about 20,000 employees of AT&T in the Southern United States. Members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) went on strike from August 24 to August 28, following the failure to agree to new employment contracts. Following several days of protest across nine states, the strike ended with a tentative deal reached between CWA and AT&T.

Background

On August 3, 2019, employment contracts between 20,000 members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and AT&T Southeast were set to expire. These workers primarily consisted of customer service representatives and technicians from AT&T's wired phone and Internet division. [1] [2] [3] Leading up to this, discussions between the two parties regarding future contract agreements were proving to be unfruitful, and leading up to the expirations the CWA began to prepare for the possibility of a labor strike. [4] The previous month, members of the CWA voted to authorize a strike if an agreement regarding contracts could not be made. [5] On August 3, hundreds of telecommunications workers held a rally outside AT&T Midtown Center (AT&T Southeast's headquarters) in Atlanta. [6] On August 10, the workers began to work without a contract. [3] A meeting on August 20 between AT&T and union officials again proved fruitless, with the union alleging that proposals by the company would have reduced paid sick time, among other unwanted effects. [7]

Course of the strike

On August 23, the CWA announced a strike that would begin at midnight. [3] [8] They also filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board alleging that AT&T was not bargaining "in good faith" and that they had failed to send proper representatives to contract discussions. [8] [9] A day prior on August 21, CWA locals 3120, 3121 and 3122 went on a Unfair labor practice protest in South Florida and walked out over issues associated with violations of the National Labor Relations Act. However, these actions were unrelated to and did not prompt the mass strike the following day. [3] [10] In total, the strike involved workers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. [9]

On August 25, Senator and 2020 Democratic Party Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders met with strikers in Louisville, Kentucky ahead of one of his campaign rallies. [11] [12] On August 28, following an agreement between CWA and AT&T, CWA announced the strike had ended and workers could return to their jobs that day. [10] [13] As part of the agreement, the two parties agreed to a 5-year contract that included increases in wages and enhancements for workers' 401(k) and pensions. [3] In general, the agreement was considered to be favorable to the labor union. [3] [14]

The 2016 Verizon workers' strike was a labor action in the United States involving about 40,000 Verizon Communications landline and Verizon Fios workers. The strike, which began April 13, was organized by trade unions International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Communications Workers of America, and represents the biggest labor action in the United States since the Verizon strike of 2011 when 45,000 workers walked out. The Atlanta sanitation strike of 1977 was a labor strike involving sanitation workers in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Precipitated by wildcat action in January, on March 28 the local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) agreed to strike. The main goal of the strike was a $0.50 hourly wage increase. With support from many community groups, Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson resisted the strike, firing over 900 striking workers on April 1. By April 16, many of the striking workers had returned to their previous jobs, and by April 29 the strike was officially ended.

The Atlanta washerwomen strike of 1881 was a labor strike in Atlanta, Georgia involving African American washerwomen. It began on July 19, 1881, and lasted into August 1881. The strike began as an effort to establish better pay, more respect and autonomy, and a uniform base salary for their work.

The 2019 Alaska ferry workers strike was a labor strike involving workers on the Alaska Marine Highway. Starting July 24, the strike involved over 400 members of the Inlandboatmen's Union of the Pacific, with the main causes of the strike being issues regarding scheduling, working conditions, and wage increases. The 2021–2022 Columbia University strike was a labor strike involving graduate student workers at Columbia University in New York City. The strike began on March 15, 2021, and ended on May 13, 2021. However, additional strike action commenced on November 3 and lasted until January 7, 2022, when a tentative agreement with the university was reached. The strike was organized by the Graduate Workers of Columbia–United Auto Workers Local 2110 (SWC–UAW), a labor union representing student workers at the university. Trade unions have historically been unrecognized by IBM. Since the company's foundation in 1911, it has not recognized any in the United States, despite efforts by workers to establish them from 1970 onward. In Germany and Australia, several trade unions have limited recognition from IBM.

The 2021 Virginia Volvo Trucks strike was a labor strike involving workers at a Volvo Trucks production facility in Dublin, Virginia, United States. The strike began in April and ended in July with the ratification of a new labor contract.

The 2021 Mercy Hospital strike was a labor strike involving nurses and hospital workers at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, in the United States. The strike began on October 1, 2021, and ended on November 4, 2021. It began following breakdown in collective bargaining negotiations between Communications Workers of America (CWA), the union representing the workers, and the Catholic Health System.

While Microsoft workers in the United States do not have a current labor union, this is expected to change with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which recognizes a union in one of its subsidiaries.
