The 2019 Australian Swimming Championships were held from 7 to 12 April 2019 at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

Following Australia's performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics where 29 medals were won and finishing 10th on the medal tally, Swimming Australia announced in the February 2017 that the timing of the selection trials would be modified. Historically, the trials were held in April several months before the Olympics were held. This will be now changed to follow the American model where the trials are held six weeks before. [1] The 2019 Australian World Swimming Trials will be held at the Brisbane Aquatics Centre in June 2019 and will be selection trials for the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. [2]

This event doubled up as the national trials for the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in London, the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy and the 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary. [3]

There was an increase in the number of events contested from 63 to 64 from the 2018 National Championships with addition of the mixed 4 × 100 m medley relay. [4] This was due to the IOC announcing in June 2017 that this event as well as the men's 800 m freestyle and the women's 1500 m freestyle events will be added to the Olympic swimming program at the Tokyo 2020 Games. [5]

Emily Seebohm chose to miss this meet to participate in the inaugural FINA Champions Swim Series event in Guangzhou, China, [6] while Thomas Fraser-Holmes was away competing at the Helsinki Swim Meet [7] and Bergen Swim Festival. [8] [9] Mack Horton was forced out due to a shoulder injury. [10]

During night three of the championships, Cate Campbell on behalf of Swimming Australia paid tribute to Kenneth To who died a few weeks prior. [11]

Defending women's 200 metre backstroke champion Kaylee McKeown was disqualified during the heats of the event. She was permitted to swim a time trial where she stopped the clock at 2:08.56 well ahead of Minna Atherton's winning time of 2:11.18 in the final. [12]

The legends relay was a mixed 4 × 50 m freestyle event swum on the penultimate night of the meet. The team were:

The event was won by Team Bramham in a time of 1:47.14, followed by Team Schipper (1:49.72), Team Trickett (1:50.01) and Team Klim (1:52.54). [13]

Broadcast

The morning sessions were streamed live on the website of Swimming Australia. [26] The evening sessions were broadcast live on 7TWO. [27] This was the fourth national championships to be screen by Seven after securing the broadcast rights with Swimming Australia in September 2015. [28] The commentary team consisted of Basil Zempilas, Ian Thorpe, Giaan Rooney with poolside interviews conducted by Nathan Templeton. [29]

Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky is an American competitive swimmer. She has won seven Olympic gold medals and 21 world championship gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. She has won a world record 16 individual gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships. Ledecky's six individual gold medals at the Olympics and 26 overall medals at the World Aquatics Championships are records in women's swimming‌. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women's 800- and 1500-meter freestyle as well as the former world record holder in the women's 400-meter freestyle. She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest Olympians and female swimmers of all time.

Daniel Fox is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. He won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics being awarded a bronze most recently in the 200m Freestyle S14. He has won gold at the Global Games, the Arafura Games, World Championships, Can-Am Championships, Para Pan Pacific Championships, EnergyAustralia Championships and the Commonwealth Games. Daniel also holds the world record for the 50m freestyle (24.77) and the 100m freestyle record (53.50) in the S14 classification. Daniel Fox is also the Australian ambassador for the INAS Global Games in 2019.

Emma Jennifer McKeon, is an Australian competitive swimmer. She is an eight-time world record holder, three current and five former, in relays. Her total career haul of 11 Olympic medals following the 2020 Olympic Games made her Australia's most decorated Olympian and included one gold medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and four gold medals from the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. With four gold and three bronze medals she was the most decorated athlete across all sports at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and tied for the most medals won by a woman in a single Olympic Games. She has also won 20 medals, including five gold medals, at the World Aquatics Championships; and a record 20 medals, including 14 gold, at the Commonwealth Games.

Madison Maree Wilson, is an Australian competitive swimmer who has participated in backstroke and freestyle events at the Olympic Games and the FINA world championships. Wilson has been a member of six world record Australian relay teams, most recently at the 2022 Short Course World Championships.

Taylor Madison Ruck is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Canada's women's 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relay teams at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her eight medal performance of one gold, five silver, and two bronze tied her with three other athletes for the most all-time at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as making her the most decorated Canadian female athlete ever at a single Commonwealth Games. Ruck is the all-time leading medallist at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships having won nine gold, two silver, and two bronze over the course of the 2015 and 2017 editions.

Li Bingjie is a Chinese swimmer. She is the world record holder in the short course 400 metre freestyle. She is the 2021 World Short Course champion in the 400 metre freestyle and 800 metre freestyle. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she won a gold medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 400 metre freestyle.

Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus, is an Australian swimmer. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the women's 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, having won both events at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the world record holder in the long course 400-metre freestyle event. In 2019 and 2020, she competed representing the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League.

The 2019 Australian World Swimming Trials are current being held from 9 to 14 June 2019 at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre in Brisbane, Queensland. The event is the selection trails for the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.

She placed fourth in the 800 meter freestyle at the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she was the youngest member of the US Olympic Team at 15 years of age.

Summer McIntosh is a Canadian competitive swimmer. A four-time World Aquatics champion and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, she is the current world record holder in the women's 400 metre individual medley.

Mollie Grace O'Callaghan, is an Australian swimmer. She was the 2023 world champion in the women's 100m and 200m freestyle individual events, and part of the world champion 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m Australian women's relay teams together with 4 × 100 m mixed relay team. As of July 2023 she is the world record holder in the women's individual 200m freestyle.

Lani Pallister is an Australian competitive swimmer. She is a world record holder in two sports, with a world record in swimming, the short course 4×200-metre freestyle relay, and world records in life saving for the youth age group in the 100-metre rescue medley and 200-metre super lifesaver. She holds the Oceanian, Commonwealth, and Australian records in the short course 1500-metre freestyle and the Australian record in the short course 800-metre freestyle. She is the first female World Short Course champion in the 1500-metre freestyle, winning the inaugural event for women at the 2022 edition. Over the course of the 2022 World Short Course Championships, she won the gold medal in each of the four events she contested.
