Romeoville is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States. The village is located 26 mi (42 km) southwest of Chicago on the Gateway Wetlands, directly west of the Des Plaines River. Per the 2020 census, the population was 39,863. It is located in the southwest suburban area of Chicago near Interstate 55 and Interstate 355.
Orland Square is a shopping mall located in Orland Park, Illinois. It is the largest mall in the Chicago Southland, the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago, covering an area of 1,229,884 sq ft (114,260.0 m2). It opened on March 15, 1976 and received major renovations in 1995. The mall features JCPenney, Macy's and Von Maur.
The Crandon shooting was a mass murder that occurred about 2:45 a.m. CDT on October 7, 2007, at a post-homecoming party inside a duplex in Crandon, Wisconsin, United States. The perpetrator, 20-year-old Tyler James Peterson, who was a full-time deputy in the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer with the Crandon Police Department, shot and killed six people and critically injured a seventh before committing suicide. One of the victims, 18-year-old Jordanne Michele Murray, was Peterson's former girlfriend, and it was believed that a dispute within the apartment motivated the shooting.
In January 2017, four perpetrators: Jordan Hill, Tesfaye "Teefies" Cooper, and Brittany and Tanishia Covington committed a hate crime and other offenses against a mentally disabled man in Chicago, Illinois. The attackers, two men and two women, laughed as they kidnapped and physically, verbally, and racially abused the victim. The incident was livestreamed on Facebook.
On April 22, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at a Waffle House restaurant in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee, United States, when 29-year-old Travis Jeffrey Reinking fatally shot four people and injured two others with an AR-15 style rifle. Another two people were injured by broken glass. Reinking was rushed by an unarmed customer, James Shaw Jr., who wrestled the rifle away and stopped the shooting spree. Reinking was captured on April 23, ending a 34-hour manhunt.
On July 21, 2018, a hostage incident occurred at a Trader Joe's store in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles. 28-year-old Gene Evin Atkins, armed and fleeing police, crashed into a utility pole and ran into the nearby store. He fired at two pursuing police officers during the pursuit and after the crash; the two officers returned fire in Atkins's direction, hitting and killing a store employee, Melyda Corado, and hitting Atkins in the left arm. After escaping into Trader Joe's, Atkins barricaded himself and the rest of the store's patrons and employees inside the store. By the end of the incident, Atkins was arrested for various criminal felonies.
On November 11, 2018, Jemel Roberson, a 26-year-old security guard for Manny's Blue Room Bar in Robbins, Illinois, was fatally shot by Ian Covey, a Midlothian police officer responding to a call of shots fired at the bar. Roberson, an African American, was working for the bar as a security guard when four people were shot by a gunman. After Roberson subdued and pinned the shooter to the ground, he was shot by a Midlothian police officer arriving at the scene.
On January 23, 2019, at around 12:30 pm, five women – four employees and a customer – were shot and killed at the SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida. After being named a suspect, 21-year-old Zephen Xaver turned himself in to police. He initially pleaded not guilty to five murders. On March 14, 2023, he pleaded guilty in the shooting.
On February 15, 2019, a mass shooting took place at Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, Illinois, United States. Six people died, including the perpetrator, 45-year-old former employee Gary Montez Martin, who was shot and killed by responding police officers. Six others were injured, including five police officers.
Marcellis Stinnette, a 19-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police officer Dante Salinas in Waukegan, Illinois, United States shortly before midnight on October 20, 2020. He was the passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by police, who were attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. According to police, the officer opened fire when the vehicle moved in reverse towards the officer. The driver, Tafarra Willams, was also wounded but survived. The officer has been fired, and another officer has been placed on administrative leave. Body camera, dashboard camera, and surveillance video of the incident has been publicly released, and the Illinois State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation have opened investigations. Demonstrations were held in Waukegan in the ensuing days.
On November 20, 2020, a shooting occurred at Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, United States. Eight people were injured but survived. The shooter fled the scene afterwards and was later arrested during a traffic stop. Police said the shooting was not a random act and had been sparked by an earlier altercation between two groups. Two days later, several people were arrested in connection with the shooting, including a 15-year-old boy.
On March 7, 2022, after 2:40 pm, a shooting occurred within the vicinity of East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S, right before school was dismissed for the day. At least 35 gunshots were fired out of at least three vehicles.
On May 19, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in Chicago, Illinois, United States, in the city's Magnificent Mile shopping district, near Michigan Avenue. Two people were killed, and eight others were injured. The accused perpetrator, Jaylun Sanders, was taken into custody by Chicago police.
On July 4, 2022, a mass shooting occurred during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, United States. The shooting occurred at 10:14 a.m. CDT (UTC−05:00), roughly 15 minutes after the parade had started. Seven people were killed, and 48 others were wounded by bullets or shrapnel.
On December 5, 2023, a shooting spree in Austin, Texas resulted in the deaths of four people and left three others injured. Another shooting in Bexar County that resulted in two deaths was said to be connected to the shootings.
The Sesler family murders took place on March 20, 2012, when Trey Eric Sesler, a 22-year-old YouTuber, shot and killed his two parents and older brother in Waller, Texas. He had planned to perpetrate a school shooting at Waller High School after murdering his family. Police were called to the family home at 1 p.m. the same day and found the bodies of his mother Rhonda Sesler, his father Lawton Sesler and his brother Mark Sesler. Investigators say that Sesler was heavily inspired by the Columbine High School massacre.
During the late night of February 11 and the early morning of February 12, 2024, three people opened fire from a vehicle in four separate locations in southeastern Los Angeles County. A total of four people were killed, including a teenager, and another teenager was injured. The perpetrators, 17-year-old Deair Delerence, 42-year-old Gary Garcia Jr., and 20-year-old Timberland McKneely, are alleged gang members and apparently shot their victims at random. Another man, 18-year-old Josevian Mendoza, was charged with killing two men alongside McKneely on November 24, 2023, in unincorporated Los Angeles County and Cudahy.
