J. D. Tippit was an American World War II U.S. Army veteran and police officer who served as an 11-year veteran with the Dallas Police Department. About 45 minutes after the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, Tippit was shot and killed in a residential neighborhood in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas, Texas, by Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was initially arrested for the murder of Tippit and was subsequently charged for killing President Kennedy. Oswald was murdered by Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner, two days later.

The perpetrator, 25-year-old Marine veteran Charles Whitman, indiscriminately fired at members of the public both within the Main Building tower and from the tower's observation deck. He shot and killed 15 people, including an unborn child, and injured 31 others before he was killed by two Austin Police Department officers approximately 96 minutes after first opening fire from the observation deck.

The Hart family murders was a murder–suicide which took place on March 26, 2018, in Mendocino County, California, United States. Jennifer Hart and her wife, Sarah Hart, murdered their six adopted children — Ciera (12), Abigail (14), Jeremiah (14), Devonte (15), Hannah (16), and Markis (19) — when Jennifer intentionally drove the family's sport utility vehicle off a cliff. Jennifer was in the driver's seat, and Sarah was in the front passenger seat.
Emani Gabrielle Moss was a ten-year-old American girl who was starved to death by her stepmother in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 2013, in what became a prominent case leading to reforms in Georgia's child welfare system. Tiffany Nicole Moss was convicted of murdering Emani in 2019 and was subsequently sentenced to death. The murder received national as well as international attention. The attention was largely due to the crime's severe nature; Moss physically abused Emani for several years before her death. In 2013, Moss began starving Emani. Emani's father, Eman, who was rarely home, failed to stop the abuse. Emani died of starvation on October 28, 2013. At the time of her death, she weighed 32 pounds, the weight of an average toddler. The murder led to several systemic changes in the Georgia Division of Family and Child Services (GDFCS). Eman pled guilty in 2015 for his role in the crime. The case against Moss went to trial, and in April 2019, Moss, who represented herself, was convicted of all counts. She was sentenced to death on May 1, 2019. She is currently incarcerated at the Arrendale State Prison and is Georgia's only female death row inmate.
On January 4, 2023, a familicide occurred in Enoch, Utah, United States when eight members of a single family, consisting of three adults and five children, were fatally shot in their home in a mass shooting. Authorities identified one of the adults, 42-year-old Michael Haight, as the perpetrator. Haight had been investigated by the Enoch Police Department for domestic abuse allegations in 2020. Two weeks prior to the killings, his wife had commenced divorce proceedings.
On April 12, 2018, Steven Walter Pladl, a 43-year-old man from Knightdale, North Carolina, murdered his biological daughter, 20-year-old Katie Rose Fusco Pladl, with whom he had been engaged in an incestuous relationship, and her adoptive father, 56-year-old Anthony Charles Fusco, in New Milford, Connecticut. He later committed suicide in Dover, New York. He had murdered his and Katie's seven-month-old child, Bennett Kieron Pladl, the day prior in Knightdale.
Gannon Stauch was an American boy who was murdered by his stepmother, Letecia Stauch, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His disappearance and death received national attention and sparked a massive search effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies and volunteers. His stepmother was arrested and convicted of first-degree murder and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
On 11 August 2017, at an unspecified location in Singapore, a five-year-old Singaporean girl, whose first name was Ayeesha, died in her flat after being severely starved and abused by her birth father. Before her death, Ayeesha and her younger brother were both confined naked inside the toilet of her father's flat for ten months, and they were both being ill-treated for about two years before the death of Ayeesha; Ayeesha's brother survived the abuse in spite of the extensive trauma and injuries he endured. Ayeesha's father was arrested and charged with murder, and also faced 25 counts of abusing Ayeesha and her brother. In the middle of his murder trial, which began in May 2023, Ayeesha's father pleaded guilty to manslaughter and child abuse in April 2024, and was sentenced to 34 years and six months in prison and 12 strokes of the cane, which was widely reported as an “unprecedented” punishment ever imposed given the unprecedented level of cruelty and violence exhibited in the Ayeesha case. The full name of Ayeesha or the identity of her father was not made public to protect the identity of Ayeesha's surviving brother.
