Against is the seventh studio album by the Brazilian metal band Sepultura, released in 1998 through Roadrunner Records. It is the band's first release with new frontman Derrick Green, who replaced group founder Max Cavalera in 1997.
Like Roots that preceded it, the album has a variety of guest musicians and incorporates tribal influences – Japanese percussion elements are added with the assistance of Japanese taiko group Kodo.
The songs "Against", "Choke" and "Tribus" were released as singles, with a music video accompanying "Choke". The video featured footage from the Barulho Contra Fome (Noise Against Hunger) concert that was the first gig of the Against tour. This performance included guest appearances from the Xavante tribe, who had featured on Roots (as documented in the "Choke" video) as well as Mike Patton, Jason Newsted, Carlinhos Brown, original Sepultura guitarist Jairo Guedz and Coffin Joe (whose "blessing" of the band performed during this concert turned up as a B-side entitled "Prenúncio" on the Tribus EP).
The flute section of "Kamaitachi" performed by Kodo is heavily based on that in "The Hunted" which appeared on Kodo's Ibuki album and was originally composed for the soundtrack of the movie of the same name. The song "The Waste" (a vocal version of "Kamaitachi" featuring Mike Patton on vocals which appeared on the single B-sides) is featured in the movie Freddy vs. Jason and its soundtrack.
The band supported Metallica in the latter's May 1999 tour in Brazil. [1]
Songs like "Choke", "Boycott" and the title track were still being played live during Machine Messiah era (2017–2018).
In 2019, many years after the album release, singer Derrick Green stated "I feel so proud and happy about it, because it has affected so many people that I didn't realise (back then). At the time when we were playing the shows, people had just gotten into the changes of the band, but so many people have great stories from their first time hearing this album. So I really feel it now when we play these songs, how excited people get, you know? It's great to see that the evolution of people having time to 'ingest' all the changes and everything. It's such an important album for keeping the band together. [2]

Against was a commercial disappointment compared to Roots, selling only 18,000 copies its first week in the US. [7] It has sold over 130,000 copies in the United States. [7] AllMusic gave the album 3 stars out of 5 and said that "there are enough flashes of the old Sepultura brilliance to suggest that great things are still to come".

Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band from Belo Horizonte. Igor Graziano Cavalera is a Brazilian musician, best known as the former drummer for the heavy metal band Sepultura, which he co-founded with his brother Max in 1984. The Best of Sepultura is a compilation album from Roadrunner Records, featuring a best of collection of Sepultura's music with the label. Although the track-listing after "Inner Self" is mostly a collection of the band's singles from 1991 to 1996, in its representation of the album Arise the compilation substitutes the single "Under Siege " for the album track "Desperate Cry".
Cavalera Conspiracy is an American heavy metal supergroup from Phoenix, Arizona, founded by Brazilian brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. The band originally formed in 2007 as Inflikted but changed its name for legal reasons. The group's creation marked the end of a 10-year feud between the Cavalera brothers who founded Sepultura in the early 1980s. In 2022, they adopted the name Cavalera in order to release re-recorded editions of classic Sepultura albums. These albums were released in 2023.
"Choke" is Sepultura's tenth official single, and the first of three to be taken from the album Against, released in 1998. This is the band's first single with Derrick Green on vocals. It is still played in concerts. The video for the single was filmed at Green's first concert with the band, and can be found on the DVD Live in São Paulo. The cover artwork simply shows the four member of the band during the same performance.
Tribus is an EP released by Brazilian band Sepultura, in 1999. It is made up of demos and remixes of songs found on the full-length album Against. The song "The Waste" is an alternate version of the song "Kamaitachi" from the album Against, featuring Mike Patton of Faith No More on vocals. "The Waste" and "Common Bonds " were also features as B-sides on the "Against" single, which also has the same artwork as the "Tribus" E.P. "Prenúncio" is a recording of Zé do Caixão's introduction of the band which used to precede their live performances. Another recording of this can be found on the band's second live album, Live in São Paulo.

It is a concept album based on the three sections of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy; Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory) and Paradiso (paradise). Live in São Paulo is the second live album by Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura. All the tracks were recorded on April 3, 2005, at a concert in São Paulo, Brazil. A DVD was also filmed at the show. The performance of "Refuse/Resist" was released as the single for the album. Both were released on November 8, through SPV Records. The album and DVD are the second time that fans can hear singer Derrick Green perform Max Cavalera-era Sepultura songs on an official release. A live version of "Roots Bloody Roots" featuring Green was released as a bonus track on Nation.
