Ana Lya Uriarte (born 17 July 1962) is the former Chief of the Cabinet of The Presidency elected by Michelle Bachelet in her second presidential period.[ citation needed ] She was also the Minister for the Environment for Chile from 2007 to 2010.
Uriarte was born in Santiago on 17 July 1962,she was the only child of a lower middle class family. Uriarte became a mother when she was thirteen [1] and her mother and grandmother had to support her. Her father died that same year. She says that the family savings were spent on buying her a caesarian operation [1] She had to left her school because it was prohibited for teen mothers to continue studying,so she continued studying in a night school. After two years and when her son was old enough to be care in the day by her grandmother,she returned to high school in another area,where nobody knew her,hiding the fact that she was a teen mother. After a difficult time at school facing discrimination as a single and teen mother,Uriarte continued to succeed due to her hard work. [1] She studied law at the University of Chile and worked part-time at the same time to support her family. She went on to be a student political activist during the 1980s building up the Student Federation of the University of Chile into an important organisation.
She trained as a lawyer and was called to the bar in 1988 in Chile. [2]
When the Catholic church founded the Vicariate of Solidarity to support work in defence of human rights. [3] She worked with Alfonso Insunza helping the victims of General Pinochet as a lawyer. Early in the 1990s she went to Germany for two years where her then-husband was studying International law at Heidelberg University. [4]
Uriarte returned to the University of Chile where she became a Professor of Environmental Law. She taught on the Masters course in Environmental Law. [5] She worked on a human rights programme for the government from 1993 to 2003. [2] She became the Minister of the Environment for Chile in March 2007 and she served until March 2010 under President Michelle Bachelet. One of the controversies that were debated during her ministry was a proposal to dam rivers to flood land and create hydroelectric power. [6] She replaced by María Ignacia Benítez.
In 2012 she was a partner in a Chilean Law firm still specialising in the Environment. [2] She is currently a Professor of Environmental Law at the University of Chile
Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria is a Chilean politician who served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2018 to 2022. She previously served as President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2018 for the Socialist Party of Chile. She is the first woman to hold the Chilean presidency. After leaving the presidency in 2010 and before becoming eligible for re-election,she was appointed as the first executive director of the newly established United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In December 2013,Bachelet was re-elected with over 62% of the vote,surpassing the 54% she received in 2006. She was the first President of Chile to be re-elected since 1932.

Feminism in Chile has its own liberation language and activist strategies for rights that is shaped by the political,economic,and social system of Chile. Beginning in the 19th century,Chilean women have been organizing with aspirations of asserting their political rights. These aspirations have had to work against the reality that Chile is one of the most socially conservative countries in Latin America. The Círculo de Estudios de la Mujer is one example of a pioneering women's organization during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973–1989) which redefined women's responsibilities and rights,linking “mothers’rights”to women's rights and women's civil liberties. The founding members of the Círculo de Estudios de La Mujer consisted of a small group of Santiago feminists who were from the Academia de Humanismo Cristiano. These women gathered "to discuss the situation of women in Chile," their first meeting drew a crowd of over 300 participants and from there challenged the authoritarian life in Santiago. These women helped shape the rights for women in Chile.
Ángela Margarita Jeria Gómez was a Chilean archaeologist. Mother of the President of Chile Michelle Bachelet,she was the wife of the Chilean Air Force Brigadier General Alberto Bachelet,who died after being tortured during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Jeria served informally in the role of first lady during the first Bachelet government,accompanying her daughter to several official functions. Her official protocolary role was "Director of the Sociocultural Area of the Presidency".
