Ann and Amelia was launched in 1816 at Chittagong. She was sold at Calcutta in August 1823 for a "Free Trader". She transported convicts from Britain to Port Jackson, New South Wales, in 1825. She then made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) and was lost in gale on the coast of France in 1835 as she was finishing her third voyage.

Career

Initially, i.e., between 1816 and 1823, Ann and Amelia participated in the local trade in India and the Far East. [2]

Ann and Amelia was sold at Calcutta in August 1823 for a "Free Trader". [6] On 14 September, Ann and Amelia, under the command of Captain Joseph Short, left Calcutta, bound for Britain. She left Bengal on 3 October, was at Madras on 19 October, and arrived at Gravesend on 18 March 1824. Lloyd's Register for 1824 shows the change of ownership from Cruttenden to Somes & Co., the change of master from I. Short to Ascough, and her trade as London-Bengal. [1] The next year her trade changed to London-New South Wales. [4]

Convict transport (1824–25)

Captain William Ascough sailed from Cork on 8 September 1824, bound for Sydney, New South Wales. Ann and Amelia arrived 2 January 1825. [3] She had embarked some 200 male prisoners (including Jack Donahue) and 200 disembarked in Sydney. [7] The 40th Regiment of Foot provided the guard detachment.

Ann and Amelia returned to Britain via Singapore and Penang. She was at Deal by 2 November. [8] The next day there was a tremendous gale. She lost her anchor and chain and had to cut away her mainmast while in the "Nob Channel" in order to ride out the gale. [9]

The EIC then chartered her for several trips from London to the Indies and China.

EIC voyage #1 (1826–27)

Captain Henry William Ford left The Downs on 10 June 1826, bound for China and Quebec. Ann and Amelia arrived at Whampoa on 11 December. She then arrived at Quebec on 10 June 1827, before returning to her moorings in Britain on 14 September. [5]

EIC voyage #2 (1830–31)

Captain William Richards left The Downs on 3 June 1830, bound for China, Halifax, and Quebec. Ann and Amelia reached Whampoa on 3 December. She then was at Lintin on 24 January 1831, and reached St Helena on 3 April. She arrived at Halifax on 18 May, and Quebec on 8 June. She returned to her moorings on 26 August. [5]

EIC voyage #3 (1832 to loss)

Captain William Compton left Portsmouth on 17 August 1832, bound for Bengal. Ann and Amelia reached the Cape on 17 August, and arrived at the Hooghli River from "London and the Cape" on 23 December. [10] Homeward bound, she was at Saugor, homeward bound, on 22 January 1833 and reached St Helena on 22 June. [5] She was almost home when a gale drove her onshore on 1 September at Berck, near Boulogne-sur-Mer, with the loss of four of her 30 crew. [11] She was so damaged she had to be abandoned. [5] [2]

<i>Providence</i> (1807 ship)

Providence was a merchant ship built at Calcutta, India, and launched in 1807. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), on one of which she delivered convicts to New South Wales. The ship was scuttled at St Martin's, Isles of Scilly in 1833 after grounding while on a voyage from London to Bombay, India.

Guildford was a two-decker merchant ship launched in 1810. She transported convicts to New South Wales. Of her eight voyages delivering convicts, for three she was under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She underwent major repairs in 1819, her hull was sheathed in copper in 1822; in 1825 she received new wales, top sides and deck, the copper was repaired and other repairs. Guildford was lost without a trace in 1831.

General Hewett, sometimes spelled General Hewart or General Hewitt, was a three-deck sailing ship launched at Calcutta in 1811. The British East India Company (EIC) purchased her to use her in the China trade. However, unlike most East Indiamen, on her first voyage from England she transported convicts from England to Australia. Thereafter, she performed five voyages for the EIC. The EIC sold her in 1830 and she then became a general merchantman. In 1864 she was sold for a hulk or to be broken up.

Asia was a merchant ship built by A. Hall & Company at Aberdeen in 1818. She made eight voyages between 1820 and 1836 transporting convicts from Britain to Australia. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1826 and 1827. At the same time she served in private trade to India as a licensed ship. She also carried assisted emigrants to Australia. She was last listed in 1845.

Albion was a sailing ship of two decks and three masts, built at Bristol, England, and launched in 1813. She made three voyages transporting convicts to Van Diemen's Land and New South Wales. She also traded with Jamaica, India, and Quebec. For two of the voyages to India she was an "extra" ship to the British East India Company (EIC).

Henry Porcher was launched in 1817 at Bristol, England. Between 1818 and 1831 she made three voyages to India for the British East India Company (EIC). On the second she first transported convicts to Sydney, New South Wales. Between these voyages for the EIC Henry Porcher traded privately to India as a licensed ship. She made two further voyages as a convict transport, one to Sydney in 1834–35, and one to Hobart in 1836. She grounded in 1858 and was broken up in 1860.

David Clark was launched in 1816 and may have been broken up at Batavia in 1854. She sailed one of the last voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). In 1839 she carried mainly Scots assisted migrants to Australia, and was the first immigrant ship to sail from Great Britain directly to Port Phillip. In 1842 she transported more than 300 convicts to Hobart. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1854.

<i>Larkins</i> (1808 ship)

Larkins made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), all as an "extra ship", i.e. under contract. On two of these voyages she first transported convicts to Australia. She also made one convict voyage independently of the EIC. She traded extensively between England and India or China, and in this twice suffered serious but not fatal maritime mishaps. In 1853 she became a coal hulk at Albany, Western Australia, and remained there until she was broken up in 1876.

Barkworth was launched in 1811 and began her career as a West Indiaman. She then made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC). Thereafter she traded with India. She disappeared without a trace in 1824 on her way to Bombay.

Apollo was launched in 1812 at Hull. She made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) as a regular ship. She continued to trade with India under licence from the EIC until she was wrecked near Cape Town in 1823.

Malabar was launched at Shields in 1804. She sailed primarily as a London-based transport. After the British East India Company (EIC) in 1814 lost its monopoly on the trade with India, Malabar made several voyages to India under a licence from the EIC. Then in 1819 she made a voyage transporting convicts to Port Jackson, Australia, followed by one in 1821 where she transported convicts to Van Diemen's Land. She is last listed in 1824.

Boyne was launched at Calcutta in 1807. In 1809 she sailed to England. She was sold to the Danes, but by 1811 was under English ownership under the name Moffat. She then made seven voyages as a "regular ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). After the EIC exited its maritime activities in 1833–34, Moffat made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia: one voyage to Port Jackson and three to Van Diemen's Land. She also made at least one voyage carrying immigrants to South Australia, and later regularly traded between Liverpool and Bombay. She was last listed in 1856.

Aurora was launched in 1790 at Calcutta. The first 10 years of her career are currently obscure. In 1801 she made a voyage to England for the British East India Company (EIC), and then was briefly registered in England. She returned to India to continue to sail as a "country ship" until she was sold to Portuguese or Spanish owners in 1811. She returned to British ownership circa 1816 and made a second voyage for the EIC, this time from China to England. She returned to English registry and made one voyage to India under a license from the EIC. She then switched to sailing between Liverpool and Quebec and was lost in the Atlantic around 1822.

Barrosa was launched in 1811 at Cossipore. She sailed to England and then made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC); during this period she also made one voyage carrying immigrants to South Africa. After the EIC gave up its maritime activities in 1833-1834, Barossa became a transport. She made three voyages transporting convicts to Australia. She was lost in 1847, without loss of life, while transporting contract labourers from Madras to Jamaica.

Stakesby was launched at Whitby in 1814. She carried immigrants to Quebec, traded with Batavia and Bombay, transported convicts to Van Diemen's Land, and made a voyage to Calcutta for the British East India Company (EIC). She disappeared in 1846 on a voyage from London to Quebec.

<i>Roxburgh Castle</i> (1825 ship)

Roxburgh Castle was launched by Wigrams & Green, Blackwall, in 1825. She made two voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), during the first of which she captured a slave schooner with 125 slaves that she delivered to Sierra Leone. She carried immigrants to New South Wales in 1838–1839. She was condemned as unseaworthy after survey at Mauritius and in 1842 was sold for breaking up.

<i>Thomas Grenville</i> (1808 EIC ship) India-built UK merchant ship 1808–1843

Thomas Grenville was an East Indiaman launched at the Bombay Dockyard for the British East India Company (EIC), and one of only a handful of East Indiamen that it actually owned. She made 14 voyages for the EIC. It sold her in 1834 when it gave up its maritime activities. She was sold for a free trader and burnt in Bombay in June 1843 in a suspicious fire.

Marquis of Huntly was launched at Rotherhithe in 1811. She made 11 voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1812 and 1834, when she was broken up.

Layton was launched in 1814 at Lancaster, possibly as a West Indiaman. She twice sailed to India under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC), once as a troopship. The EIC later chartered Layton three times for single voyages to India and Java. She made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia. She also made two voyages carrying emigrants from the United Kingdom to New South Wales. She was lost in 1847.

Prince Regent was launched at Blackwall in 1811. She made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1811 and 1834 to India and China. She made one more voyage to China after the end of the EIC's trading activities in 1833, and was broken up in 1838.
