The Island Games are biannual international multi-sports events organised by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). Competitor teams each represent different island communities which are IIGA members. Currently all competitor teams represent non-sovereign territories of European nations—some within European waters and some further overseas.
Football has been a regular event since 1989 at the Island Games, the biennial multi-sports event for island nations, territories and dependencies. A 5-a-side competition for under-16s was held at the inaugural event on the Isle of Man, and the success this minor competition brought to the games meant senior men's football was included on the itinerary for the first time in the Faroe Islands, in 1989. Women's football was included on the games' schedule for the first time in 2001.
Guernsey participates in its own right in the Commonwealth Games.
Athletics competitions at the 2011 Island Games in the Isle of Wight was held from June 26 to July 1 at the Fairway Sports Complex. The half marathon event was held on a double-loop circuit through the surrounding area.
In India, the sport of athletics was introduced during the period of the British Raj. The sport is governed at national level by the Athletics Federation of India, which was formed in 1946. Despite its large population, at the top level of the sport few Indian athletes have won a medal in a global or major championship. This began to change in the 21st century, when Indians started taking greater interest in athletics more generally and improved facilities for the sport began to be built at a local level. At a continental level, it has been among the more successful Asian nations, though some distance behind China and Japan.
Athletics has a long history in Wales, with many events recognised today codified during the Victorian period. The first amateur athletic clubs in Wales were formed in the 1870s, while the first championships began in the early 20th century. Wales began competing as a country in international athletic events in the 1920s and has since produced a notable number of world class sportspeople including many medal winning Commonwealth, World, Olympic, Paralympic and European champions. Wales competes in the Commonwealth Games under its own flag but at the Olympic Games, Welsh athletes compete alongside those of Scotland, England and Northern Ireland as part of a Great Britain team.
Athletics, for the 2013 Island Games, was held at the Bermuda National Stadium in Devonshire Parish, Bermuda. It took place from 15 – 19 July 2013.
St. Peter F.C. is a football club based on the Channel Island of Jersey. They are affiliated to the Jersey Football Association and play in the Jersey Football Combination Premiership. The club hosted matches during the 2015 Island Games, including the 3rd/4th place play off match.
St. John F.C. is a football club based in Jersey in the Channel Islands, was founded in 1919. They are affiliated to the Jersey Football Association and play in the Jersey Football Combination Championship. Their ground hosted matches during the 2015 Island Games, including a match between Jersey and The Isle of Man which attracted 1,800 fans. Jersey based influencer Chris Dixon played for St. John F.C. and dedicated several videos about past seasons.
The XVI Island Games was held in Jersey, Channel Islands, from 27 June to 3 July 2015. This was the second time that the island has hosted the games, the first being in 1997.
The African Half Marathon Championships was a biennial half marathon running competition between athletes from Africa. A short-lived event, it was held on three occasions from its inauguration in 1995 to its dissolution in 1999.
Tanzania competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. Seven athletes, five men and two women, competed in five events across three sports, but did not win any medals. Hilal Hemed Hilal, however, set a new national record in the men's 50 m freestyle event. Four athletes took part in track and field athletics, all in marathons, while two participated in the swimming tournament's 50 m freestyle category. The flagbearer for the opening ceremony was Andrew Thomas Mlugu, who was Tanzania's first Olympic judoka. His counterpart in the closing ceremony was Alphonce Felix Simbu, who had earned the nation's best finish at the Games by placing fifth in the men's marathon. Prior to these Games, Tanzania had sent athletes to twelve editions of the Summer Olympics.

Jersey Basketball Association(JBBA) is the governing body of the sport of basketball in Jersey. The Jersey Basketball Association facilitates competitive opportunities for the sport and has U17, U21, Men's and Women's teams that represent the Island of Jersey.
Kimberley Ashton, also known as Kim Ashton, is a cyclist and former badminton player from Jersey. She represented Jersey in badminton at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and cycling at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She has also competed at the Island Games.
Arnold Rogers is a Gibraltarian long-distance runner.
Joelle Marie Gilbert is a Gibraltarian footballer who plays as a midfielder for Lions Gibraltar and the Gibraltar women's national team.
