Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League is an associate body and the volunteer wing of the Bangladesh Awami League. Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Shachchu is the Acting President [1] [2] and Afzalur Rahman Babu the general secretary of the organization. [3]

History

Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League was founded on 27 July 1994. [4] [5] It traces its origin to the Swechchhasebak Bahini founded in 1949 at the establishment of the Awami League by Zillur Rahman. [6]

In 2008, Pankaj Debnath, General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League was sentenced to jail for corruption by a special anti-corruption court established in the MP hostel of the Jatiya Sangshad complex by the Caretaker Government during the 2006-2008 Bangladeshi political crisis. [7] [8] He is the incumbent Member of Parliament from Barisal-4. [9]

On 25 November 2013, Rabiul Islam, the General Secretary of Deyara Union unit of Awami Swecchasebak League was killed in clashes with Bangladesh Nationalist Party supporters after they called a strike. [10] Swechasabak League organized an exhibition on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, called "History Speaks Up", at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on 15 August 2012. [11] President of Sadarghat, Chittagong unit of Swechasebak League, Ibrahim Manik, was shot dead in December 2016 in Chittagong. [12] On 1 August 2018, they bought out a procession of light in memory of former president Mujib in a lead up to marking his assassination in August. [13]

On 13 December 2018, Asadul Islam Ershad, General Secretary of Muladholi Union unit of the Awami Swechasebak League, was killed in general election-related violence. [14]

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is a major political party in Bangladesh. Mosharraf Hossain is a Bangladeshi politician, valiant freedom fighter and one of the leading industrialists. He is a former Member of Parliament of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and former Minister of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. After his graduation from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in 1966 he joined politics and was elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) of what was then East Pakistan in 1970. In the political arena, he is the Presidium Member, the highest policy-making post of Bangladesh Awami League, the oldest and traditional political organization of the country. His constituency is Chattogram-1 (Mirsarai). He served the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism in the Awami League government in 1996. He made significant contributions to the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. He served as the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works till 6 January 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Proclamation of Bangladeshi Independence</span> 1971 founding document of Bangladesh

The independence of Bangladesh was declared on 26 March 1971, at the onset of the Bangladesh Liberation War by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman; the following day the declaration was broadcast by Major Ziaur Rahman from Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra radio station in Kalurghat, Chattogram. On 10 April, the Provisional Government of Bangladesh issued a proclamation on the basis of the previous declaration and established an interim constitution for the independence movement.

The 21 August 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 pm after Sheikh Hasina, the leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. The involvement of BNP-Jamaat led government is still debated to this date.

Abdullah Al Noman is a Bangladeshi politician who is a vice-chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He is a 3-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency. He served as a minister of fisheries and food at the Second Khaleda Cabinet.

The non-cooperation movement of 1971 was a historical movement in then East Pakistan by the Awami League and the general public against the military government of Pakistan in March of that year. After the announcement of the suspension of the session of the National Assembly of Pakistan on 1 March, the spontaneous movement of the people started, but officially on the call of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the non-cooperation movement started on 2 March and continued until 25 March. The movement lasted for a total of 25 days.

AFM Bahauddin Nasim is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and current Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. He is incumbent Member of Parliament for Dhaka-8 Constituency.

The Bangladesh Mohila Awami League is the women wing of Bangladesh Awami League. Meher Afroze Chumki is the president and Shabnam Jahan Shila is the general secretary of the league. The Mohila League has infrequent elections for local and national positions, and witnesses fractional conflicts.

The Bangladesh Krishak League was established onn 19 April 1972, at the behest of Bangabandhu, eminent lawyer Sirajul Islam Khan was appointed as the convener of the constitution-making committee and founding vice-president of the Krishka League Central Committee. Krishka League is closely associated with Bangladesh Awami League and is working as one of its affiliated organizations. Samir Chanda is currently the chairman of the Krishak League and Umme Kulsum is the general secretary.

The Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal commonly known as the Jubo Dal, is the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi politician and current mayor of Chattogram. He is also the joint general secretary of Chattogram Mahanagar Awami League. He was elected in 2021.
