The Bangladesh cricket team toured India to play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) against the Afghanistan cricket team in Dehradun. [1]

Contents

Afghanistan won the first two matches of the series, therefore giving them an unassailable lead. [2] This gave them their first bilateral T20I series win against another Test team other than Zimbabwe. [3] [4] Afghanistan went on to win the series 3–0. [5]

Background

Originally the matches were scheduled to be played as One Day Internationals (ODIs), [6] but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) agreed to change the fixtures to T20Is in preparation for the 2020 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. [1] In May 2018, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that all three matches will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. [7] These were the first international cricket matches to be played at the venue. [8]

Ahead of the T20Is, Bangladesh played a practice match against Afghanistan A. [9]

Prior to this series, Afghanistan and Bangladesh had only played each other once before in a T20I, in the group stage of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament, with Bangladesh winning by nine wickets. [10]

Ahead of the series, Mustafizur Rahman was ruled out of Bangladesh's squad due to injury. [13] Abul Hasan was named as his replacement. [14] Hazratullah Zazai was added to Afghanistan's squad ahead of the first T20I. [15]

The Bangladeshi cricket team toured New Zealand from December 2016 to January 2017 to play two Test matches, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20Is). New Zealand won both the ODI and T20I series 3–0 and won the Test series 2–0.

Shohidul Islam is a Bangladeshi cricketer who plays for Dhaka Metropolis. He made his international debut for the Bangladesh cricket team in November 2021. In July 2022, he was suspended from playing in any form of cricket for ten months, backdated to 28 May 2022, due to a doping violation.

The 2018 Nidahas Trophy was a T20 cricket tournament that was held in Sri Lanka in March 2018. It was a tri-nation series between Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Each team played each other twice, with two teams progressing to the final. The tournament was played to celebrate Sri Lanka's 70th year of independence; the title derives from the Sinhalese නිදහස් nidahas, meaning "freedom." Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed that the matches would be played as Twenty20 International fixtures. The fixtures and venue were announced in November 2017, with all the matches played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This was the first occasion that Discovery Networks Asia Pacific channel DSport acquired media rights to broadcast live cricket matches involving the Indian cricket team.

The West Indies cricket team toured Bangladesh in November and December 2018 to play two Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. It was the West Indies first full tour of Bangladesh since December 2012. The fixtures were confirmed in July 2018, with the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium scheduled to host its first ODI match. During the third ODI, it hosted its first ODI match.

The Ireland cricket team toured India in February and March 2019 to play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a Test match against the Afghanistan cricket team. It was Ireland's first Test played overseas and the first Test match between the two sides. All of the fixtures took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun. The ODI fixtures were part of Afghanistan's preparation for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The Afghanistan cricket team toured Bangladesh in February and March 2022 to play three One Day International (ODI) and two Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. On 1 February 2022, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the schedule for the tour. The ODI matches took place in Chittagong, with the T20I matches played in Dhaka.
