Barnes Avenue School is a school building located at 1028 West Barnes Avenue in Lansing, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. [1]
In the early 20th century, the rise of the automobile and the auto factories in Lansing attracted large number of workers. Middle-class neighborhoods sprang up around the factories, and these new residents strained the capacity of the school system. In 1919, the Lansing School District raised funds to build a school in the neighborhood south of the Grand River to house kindergarten and grades one through eight. They commissioned architect Judson Newell Churchill to design the building, planning for two steps of construction. Construction immediately began on the first portion of the school, and it opened in September of the same year. The district constructed the second phase in 1920. [2]
Soon after opening, the Lansing School District created junior high schools and Barnes shifted to serve students in grades one through six, plus kindergarten. In 1958, an all-purpose room was added to the rear of the building. The school continued to serve as a public school until the 1970s, when declining enrolment led the Lansing School District to consolidate schools. Barnes closed in 1979. Afterward, the school building became home to a series of charter schools. [2] The latest, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz Academy, opened in 1995 and closed its doors in 2019. [3]
The front of Barnes Avenue School is a symmetrical building, three stories high and nine bays wide. The center entrance is in a stone surround, with a stone tablet that reads "Barnes Ave School 1919" above. The middle five bays each have a window in the third floor. On the second, the center bay contains the stone tablet. The flanking bays have paired windows, while the outer of the five bays have tall, narrow window openings. The two bays on each end of the building contain tapestry brick panels with small stone corner blocks. [2]
The Duke Ellington House is a historic residence at 935 St. Nicholas Avenue, in Manhattan, New York City. Apartment 4A in this apartment house was the home of Duke Ellington (1899-1974), the noted African American composer and jazz pianist, from 1939 through 1961. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and became a New York City designated landmark in 2023.
The Upper Elementary School, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Goffstown High School, is a historic school building located at 12 Reed Street in the center of Goffstown, New Hampshire. The building was constructed in 1925 and served as the town's first purpose-built high school until the opening of the present high school on Wallace Road in 1965. The building, renamed "Upper Elementary School", then served the town's intermediate-grade students until the opening of Mountain View Middle School. The building has since been converted into senior housing and is now known as The Meetinghouse at Goffstown. It was listed on the National Register in 1997.
The Black Rock Gardens Historic District is a historic district in the Black Rock neighborhood of Bridgeport, Connecticut. It encompasses a small residential development built between 1916 and 1920 to provide housing for workers in war-related industries in the city. It is a well-preserved example of one of several such developments made in the city with funding by the United States Housing Corporation, a government agency. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
The East Irvington School, or East Irvington Public School, is a former school building that served the neighborhood of that name in the town of Greenburgh, New York, United States as part of the Irvington School District. It was built in 1891 to educate the children of a growing population of Irish American laborers, and was expanded in 1925. The building continued to be used as a school until 1972. The brick building on Mountain Lane, with a rear entrance on Taxter Road, has since been converted to a condominium, but remains the oldest standing school building in the area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The Cass–Davenport Historic District is a historic district containing four apartment buildings in Detroit, Michigan, roughly bounded by Cass Avenue, Davenport Street, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The Milner Arms Apartments abuts, but is not within, the district.
The Jefferson–Chalmers Historic Business District is a neighborhood located on East Jefferson Avenue between Eastlawn Street and Alter Road in Detroit, Michigan. The district is the only continuously intact commercial district remaining along East Jefferson Avenue, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
The South End–Groesbeckville Historic District is located in part of the neighborhood of that name in Albany, New York, United States. It is a 26-block, 57-acre (23 ha) area south of the Mansion and Pastures neighborhoods with a mix of residential and commercial properties. In 1984 it was recognized as a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Communications Technology High School was a public high school serving grades 9–12 located at 8110 Lyons Avenue in the Hedgerow neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school, which was located next to George Pepper Middle School, was part of the School District of Philadelphia's Comprehensive High School Region; in its later years, it operated as a campus of John Bartram High School, which is still in operation. In 2013, amid the rapid growth of publicly-funded charter schools in Philadelphia, the City shut down Communications Technology High School, along with 22 other district-run schools, to cut costs and consolidate the district's remaining students on fewer campuses. Students enrolled at Communications Technology at the time were automatically re-enrolled at the main campus of John Bartram High School.

The College Corner Commercial Historic Business District, also known as the Highland Park Historic Business District at Euclid and Second, is located in the north-central section of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It is located in the Highland Park neighborhood that also includes the Highland Park Historic Business District at Euclid and Sixth Avenues. The College Corner historic district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998.

Frankville School, also known as the Frankville Museum, is a historic structure located in the unincorporated community of Frankville, Iowa, United States. It was built in 1872 by W.H. Hopper, replacing an older building from the mid-1850s. It is a two-story, stone vernacular structure, capped with a gable roof. The stone is rock-faced ashlar limestone. The stones on the front facade are carefully dressed compared with those on the other elevations. The lintels and window sills are blocks of rock-faced stone, except for those on the front. On the front, carefully dressed stone voussoirs and keystones are used for the round arches for the main entrance and the window above. High school classes were added in the 1920s. In 1958 the school was reduced to kindergarten and 7th and 8th grades. It closed in 1962. The following year the Winneshiek County Historical Society acquired the building and operated a museum in it. It remains in the community's park.

This section of buildings is the most intact collection along this stretch of Detroit's Michigan Avenue. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.
