Baruc is the name of an electoral ward in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It covers the southern area of the town, including Barry Island, Cold Knap and the area around Romilly Park.

The ward elects three county councillors to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and three councillors to Barry Town Council. [1] The ward is currently represented by Plaid Cymru.

According to the 2021 United Kingdom census the population of the ward was 8,663. [2]

In 2022 the number of county councillors was increased from two, to three, as a result of recommendations from the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales. [3]

Election results

On 4 May 2017 the Baruc ward re-elected two Plaid Cymru councillors to the County Council. On 15 May councillor Nic Hodges, also a town councillor, was elected as the first Plaid Cymru mayor of Barry, the first mayor to represent the Baruc ward for 35 years. [4]

At the 1985, 1989 and 1993 county elections, prior to the creation of the Vale of Glamorgan county, Baruc elected a county councillor to South Glamorgan County Council. The Conservative candidate won each of these elections. [7]

Baruc (or Barruc) was also an electoral ward to the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council between 1973 and 1996. Until 1983 it elected three councillors (all Conservative), from the 1983 election the ward elected two councillors (again, all Conservative). [8]

The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.

The 2022 Vale of Glamorgan Council election took place as of 5 May 2022 to elect 54 members across 24 wards to Vale of Glamorgan Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. The previous Vale of Glamorgan all-council election took place in May 2017 and future elections will take place every five years.

Penrhiw-ceibr is the name of an electoral ward in the Cynon Valley, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Its boundaries are coterminous with the village and community of Penrhiwceiber. The ward elects two councillors to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.
