Birgit Lorenz (born 20 August 1963 in East Berlin, East Germany) is a former East German pair skater who competed with Knut Schubert. They won the gold medal at the East German Figure Skating Championships in 1981 and 1985, and captured the silver medal in four additional years. The couple won the bronze at the European Figure Skating Championships in 1983 and 1984 and finished fifth at the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. They also finished a career-best sixth place at the 1984 World Figure Skating Championships.

Kristin Otto is a German Olympic swimming champion. She is most famous for being the first woman to win six gold medals at a single Olympic Games, doing so at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. In long course, she held the world records in the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyle events. Otto was also the first woman to swim the short course 100 meter backstroke in under a minute, doing so at an international short course meet at Indiana University in 1983.

Barbara Ann Underhill is a Canadian former pair skater. With partner Paul Martini, she is the 1984 World champion, the 1979–1983 Canadian national champion, and the 1978 World Junior champion. They represented Canada at the 1980 Winter Olympics, where they placed 9th, and at the 1984 Winter Olympics, where they placed 7th. In 2009, she was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Since retiring, Underhill has worked as a skating coach for ice hockey players.

The 1983 Blue Swords was a senior international figure skating competition in East Germany. Skaters from fourteen countries participated at the competition in East Berlin. The competition was held November 23–26 1983. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles and pair skating. Boris Uspenski won the men's title for the Soviet Union. Janina Wirth and Birgit Lorenz / Knut Schubert won gold for East Germany in the ladies' and pairs' categories, respectively.
