In 2018, two firms in Spain ranked among the world's biggest publishers of books in terms of revenue: Grupo Planeta and Grupo Santillana. [1] [nb 1] In 2013, there were 524,213 titles in print in Spain, including 76,434 new titles. [4]
"The first Spanish press was set up in 1473 at Valencia, where the German trading company of Ravensburg had an important base.... Publishing flourished in the early period at Barcelona, Burgos, Zaragoza, Seville, and the university towns of Salamanca and Alcalá de Henares." [5] The Instituto Nacional del Libro Español (National Book Institute) formed in 1941. [6] As of 2004 Spain had some 2,000+ book publishers in the private sector, including Prensa Española , and Prisa. [7] As of 2013 there were 809 publishing enterprises.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated Madrid the 2001 World Book Capital.

Amadís de Gaula is an Iberian landmark work among the Spanish and Portuguese chivalric romances which were in vogue in the 16th century, although its first version, much revised before printing, was written at the onset of the 14th century in an uncertain place of the Iberian Peninsula.

In English, Castilian Spanish can mean the variety of Peninsular Spanish spoken in northern and central Spain, the standard form of Spanish, or Spanish from Spain in general. Ediciones Ekare is a Venezuelan based children's book Publisher. Ekaré began in 1978 in Caracas, Venezuela and its initial goal was to publish books which reflected the Venezuelan and Latin American culture and landscape. Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, 2nd Count of la Viñaza, was a Spanish diplomat and academic who served as a deputy to the Spanish Congress and published notable works on linguistics, philology, and art history.

Ricardo J. Vicent Museros was a Spanish printer and publisher. After studying in Germany he returned to Valencia with new methods of work, advertising and graphic marketing. He founded the "Museo Nacional de la Imprenta y la Obra Gráfica" in El Puig de Santa María. He promoted the twinning of the cities of Valencia and Mainz (Germany). In 1992, the International Gutenberg Society granted him the "Gutenberg Prize" and in 2003 he received the "Cross of Civil Merit" from the German government for his work in favour of cultural relations between Spain and Germany.

Iberian Books is a bibliographical research project set up to chart the development of printing in Spain, Portugal and the New World in the early-modern period. It offers a catalogue of what was known to have been printed, along with a survey of surviving copies and links to digital editions. It is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The records created are made available in an open-access database under a Creative Commons license.

Overall, "Germany has some 2,000 publishing houses, and more than 90,000 titles reach the public each year, a production surpassed only by the United States." Unlike many other countries, "book publishing is not centered in a single city but is concentrated fairly evenly in Berlin, Hamburg, and the regional metropolises of Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich."
