Boston, or Boston Estate, is a suburb in Bellville, City of Cape Town, South Africa, and is one of Bellville's oldest residential suburbs.

History

In 1900, a company from the United States of America bought a piece of land known as “the Willows” from a Mr Duminy. This land used to be part of Loevenstein. The new owners decided to subdivide the land into stands and which spurred residential development in the area. [1] The popular building style was Victorian. Bay windows, wooden floors, lead glass windows, pressed steel ceilings and wooden frame windows were common features of individual homes. [2]

Etymology

Boston is named after the eponymous city of Boston, Massachusetts. Most street names in Boston reflect the suburb's US connections, e.g. Broadway, Washington, Gladstone, Lincoln, Salisbury and Cleveland. [3]

Education

D.F. Malan High School, [4] Totius Primary, [5] Boston Primary, [6] (first English medium school in the Northern Suburbs [7] ) and Vredelust Primary [8] are schools located within the area.

Murder

Boston was the location of the infamous “Scissors Murderess”, Marlene Lehnberg and her accomplice Marthinus Charles Choegoe, who murdered Susanna Magdalena van der Linde on 4 November 1974 with a pair of scissors in Gladstone Street, Boston. Lehnberg had an affair with van der Linde's husband, Christiaan. This drew South Africa and the world's attention to the suburb. Judge Justice Diemont found both guilty on 12 March 1975 and after appealing the death sentence Lehnberg and Choegoe were sentenced to jail for 20 and 15 years respectively. [9]

Rashied Staggie, former leader of the Hard Livings gang. In 2004 he was convicted of stealing weapons from the Faure police station. He was sentenced to 13 years in jail. He stayed in a highly secured property in Boston. Rival gangs tried to kill him there a number of times. Crime is below average in this suburb. [11]

Francois Van Coke, stage name for Francois Badenhorst is a rock singer. Associated acts include Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. He also acts as a solo artist. He and his wife are local residents. [12]

Crystal-Donna Roberts, South African actress and SAFTA winner for her role in Krotoa (2017). She was also the first South African actress to walk the red carpet at the 72nd Venice Film Festival in light of her role in The Endless River (2015). She and her husband are local residents in Boston. [13]

Donovan Wright, South African Marathon runner and Comrades marathon Gold medallist, came from an underprivileged past to end up in Boston. [14] [15]

June van Merch, South African actress, currently resides in Boston. [16]

Albert Maritz, actor, grew up in Boston. [17]

Marlene Lehnberg was a South African murderer more commonly known as The Scissor Murderess. She was 18 years old in 1974 when she and hired killer Marthinus Choegoe stabbed Susanna Magdalena van der Linde, the wife of Lehnberg’s 47-year-old lover Christiaan van der Linde, to death with a pair of scissors. At 19 she was then the youngest woman to be convicted of murder in South Africa. Both Lehnberg and Marthinus Choegoe received the death penalty, but this was later set aside and she served 11 years of her 20-year sentence in Pollsmoor Prison outside Cape Town.

Rashied Staggie was a South African gangster and leader of the Hard Livings gang. He was shot and killed in Salt River on 13 December 2019, in Cape Town, South Africa. His twin brother, Rashaad Staggie, the initial leader of the Hard Livings gang, was killed after being shot and burned alive in Salt River in 1996 by members of the vigilante group PAGAD. The Staggie brothers were killed in the same street, London Road.

aKING is a South African melodic rock band based in Bellville, a suburb of Cape Town. The band was formed in November 2007 by Hunter Kennedy and Jaco 'Snakehead' Venter, both members of the Bellville-based Fokofpolisiekar, in collaboration with Laudo Liebenberg and Hennie van Halen (bass).

Francois Van Coke South African singer

Francois Badenhorst, better known by his stage name Francois Van Coke, rose to fame as the front man of South African rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. On the 8 April 2015, Francois launched his self-titled debut solo album and kicked his solo career into gear with the release of – Toe Vind Ek Jou featuring Karen Zoid. It was the first Afrikaans album and single to simultaneously jump to number one positions on the South African iTunes Store. The song was downloaded more than 20,000 times on iTunes, achieving Platinum status as a single. The music video for "Toe Vind Ek Jou" was viewed over a million times within six-month and was announced as the biggest Afrikaans music video of 2015. His second album, Hierdie is die Lewe followed in 2017 and in 2018 he released a collab-EP, Francois van Coke en Vriende featuring collaborations with Die Heuwels Fantasties, Early B, Laudo Liebenberg and Jack Parow. The first season of his TV show, Die Van Coke Show, aired in 2018. His third solo album, Dagdrome in Suburbia, released in October 2019. He has a daughter named Alex, age 4–5, and as of June 2020 his wife was expecting a baby boy.

It was originally an academic hospital for medical students of Stellenbosch University and was utilised for this purpose until 1976, after which it changed to a hospital catering for private patients.

Bellville historical clay and stone quarry and adjacent jail

In 1930 the owners of the land started mining activities on a 260 hectare piece of land situated in Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa. In 1936 a Jail was built next to the Quarry. Today very little of the Quarry and Jail is left and it was replaced with modern city infrastructure.
