Carlo Romeo (born 9 September 1954) is an Italian journalist and media executive. Romeo has been RAI manager for over 25 years. [1] From 2012 to 2021, he served as General Director of the San Marino RTV, the State television of the Republic of San Marino. [2]
In 1979 Romeo graduated in Literature, specializing in Medieval Latin Paleography at Sapienza University of Rome. He was collaborator of the Italian paleographer and medievalist Armando Petrucci, [3] working on historical studies mainly focused on written culture and Medieval literacy. He also contributed to the Biographical Dictionary of Treccani, editing the profiles of some of the historical protagonists of Rome in the X and XI centuries. [4] [ failed verification ]
At the end of the 70s, Romeo was part of the first national editorial staff of Radio Radicale. In 1981 he moved to Teleroma 56, the first Roman private broadcaster founded in 1976 by the Italian architect and professor Bruno Zevi, becoming director in 1987. Romeo carried out reportage in Lebanon (September 1983), [5] in the former Yugoslavia during the conflict between Croatia and Serbia, in Tel Aviv during the bombings in January 1991, in Mauritania and in Burkina Faso where he interviewed Thomas Sankara [6] in 1985. In the 1980s he was arrested and expelled from Turkey, Poland [7] and Czechoslovakia [8] while documenting civil rights demonstrations.
In 1995 Romeo became a managing editor in RAI, the Italian public broadcasting company, serving first as director of the RAI headquarter of Valle d'Aosta and then of Emilia-Romagna. From 2000 to November 2012 he was in charge of the Social Secretariat of RAI. [9] In this position, he carried out social communication activities in Darfur, [10] Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, in Lebanon in the refugee camp of Ain el Helwe in Sidon, [11] in Kosovo and, since 2010, several times in Afghanistan. From 2012 to 2021 Romeo was General Director of San Marino RTV, the public service broadcasting of San Marino, founded in 1991 with a share capital by ERAS (San Marino broadcasting body) and RAI. Under his direction, San Marino RTV has reached a signal coverage of the entire Italian peninsula. [12] From 29 October 2021, all the TV programs of the public service broadcasting are visible on the channel 831 of the Italian digital terrestrial platform. [13]
Romeo taught broadcast journalism at Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (1995-1998) and at the School of Journalism of the University of Bologna (1999-2004). [14] He has been lecturer at NATO/Isaf courses for OMLT and MAT military personnel in Afghanistan. [15]
Since 2019 Romeo is one the hosts of "Stampa e Regime", [16] the morning press review of Radio Radicale. In 2020 Romeo has been nominated general adviser of the Transnational Radical Party. [17] In 2021 he has been appointed scientific adviser for the media and communication of the Italian Navy. [18] Since 2022 Carlo Romeo runs his personal blog, Ferian. [19]
On 2 June 2023 at the Italian Embassy in San Marino, Carlo Romeo was awarded the title of Knight of Merit of the Italian Republic. [20]
Romeo is the author of books about the sea [21] and sailboats. [22] His first book, "Boatpeople" (2007), was presented in Rome by the Italian writer Andrea Camilleri. In "Di mare, barche e marinai: 100 storie per prendere il largo" (2015), Romeo deals with the relationship between man and the sea through the stories of John Wayne, John F. Kennedy, and Humphrey Bogart, among the others. [23] In his last book, "Burrasche. Diario di bordo 2022", [24] Romeo reflects on the main events of 2022, in a logbook that intertwines current events and episodes related to the past.
RAI – Radiotelevisione italiana, commercially styled as Rai since 2000 and known until 1954 as Radio Audizioni Italiane, is the national public broadcasting company of Italy, owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. RAI operates many terrestrial and subscription television channels and radio stations. It is one of the biggest broadcasters in Italy, competing with Mediaset and other minor radio and television networks. RAI has a relatively high television audience share of 35.9%.
Radio Radicale is the official radio station of the Italian Radical Party. Founded in 1976 as part of the Radio libere movement, it has no commercial advertisements and is partly funded by the party, with support from the Italian government as part of an agreement for the broadcasting of Parliamentary sessions.
San Marino has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 13 times, debuting in the 2008 contest, followed by participation from 2011 onward. The nation did not participate in 2009 or 2010, citing financial difficulties. Having failed to qualify in their first four attempts, the nation qualified for the contest's final for the first time in 2014. Valentina Monetta represented San Marino in 2012, 2013 and 2014, making her the first entrant to participate in three consecutive contests since the 1960s. In 2019, Serhat managed to qualify to the final, marking the second appearance of the country in a Eurovision final and achieving their best result to date of 19th place. The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) internally selected Valentina Monetta with "The Social Network Song" to represent the nation in the contest. SMRTV had initially proposed a different version of the song, titled "Facebook Uh, Oh, Oh", but was instructed to modify or replace the entry due to concerns relating to commercial messaging. The entry was promoted through the creation of a music video, a promotional tour throughout Europe and interviews to the press in the lead up to the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. San Marino performed 11th in the first semi-final, held on 22 May 2012, and placed 14th, receiving 31 points and failing to qualify for the grand final. This marked their best placing in the contest to this point.

The song was written by Olcayto Ahmet Tuğsuz and Nektarios Tyrakis and was presented to the public on 9 March 2016 alongside its music video. While initially a ballad version had been selected, SMRTV subsequently opted to use the disco version of the song for the contest based on feedback from the public. To promote the entry, Serhat embarked on a promotional tour across Europe in the lead up the Eurovision Song Contest. San Marino performed eighth in the first semi-final, held on 10 May 2016, and placed 12th with 68 points, failing to qualify for the final.

The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) internally selected Sammarinese singer Valentina Monetta and American singer Jimmie Wilson with "Spirit of the Night" to represent the nation in the contest. Monetta had previously represented San Marino as a solo artist on three previous occasions. The 2017 entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was promoted through the creation of a music video and promotional performances in Tel Aviv, Amsterdam and Madrid. San Marino performed 10th in the second semi-final, held on 11 May 2017, and placed 18th with one point, failing to qualify for the final.
San Marino participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, held in Lisbon, Portugal. The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) partnered with the London-based company 1in360 to stage an online search for their entrant, marking the first time the nation did not select their representative internally. The process, entitled 1in360, culminated in an 11-participant final with acts chosen from three wildcard selection processes and two 11-act showcase events. The winner of 1in360 was "Who We Are" performed by Jessika featuring Jenifer Brening. The 2018 entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was promoted through performances in London, Amsterdam, Madrid and Lisbon as well as a 10-week anti-bullying campaign to raise money for the Diana Award. San Marino performed fourth in the second semi-final, held on 10 May 2018, and placed 17th with 28 points, failing to qualify for the final.
San Marino participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held in Tel Aviv, Israel. The Sammarinese broadcaster San Marino RTV (SMRTV) confirmed that a second season of 1in360 would not take place to select the entry. In January 2019, they announced that Serhat had been internally selected to represent the nation in the contest with the song "Say Na Na Na", co-written by himself and Mary Susan Applegate. Serhat had previously represented San Marino in 2016 but failed to qualify for the final. To promote the entry, a music video for the song was released and Serhat made appearances at Eurovision parties in Amsterdam and Madrid in the lead up to the contest. San Marino performed last (17th) in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, held on 14 May 2019, and placed 8th, receiving 150 points. The entry qualified for the final held four days later, where the nation placed 19th with 77 points. This marked their best placing to this point and their second final qualification.

San Marino planned to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, which was scheduled to be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Italian singer Senhit was chosen to represent the nation with her song "Freaky!". Sammarinese broadcaster San Marino RTV (SMRTV) internally selected the singer, while her song was selected through a national final entitled Digital Battle. Senhit previously represented San Marino in the 2011 contest, but failed to qualify for the final. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe during 2020, the Eurovision Song Contest was cancelled in mid-March 2020. "Freaky!" was subsequently an entry for several replacement events including Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, Der kleine Song Contest and Sveriges 12:a. Senhit announced during the former of the three that she would return to represent the nation at the 2021 contest the following year.
Lauro De Marinis, known professionally as Achille Lauro, is an Italian singer, songwriter and rapper. He gained popularity in the Italian hip hop scene and he competed in the Sanremo Music Festival 2019 with the song "Rolls Royce", at the 2020 edition with the song "Me ne frego", and at the 2022 edition with the song "Domenica". He represented San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with the song "Stripper", after winning Una voce per San Marino, but failed to qualify for the final.
The COVID-19 pandemic in San Marino was a part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached San Marino in February 2020.
