Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino, commonly known as San Marino RTV (abbreviated SMRTV), is the public service broadcaster of San Marino. On 13 June 2011, San Marino RTV changed its name to SMtv San Marino. In November 2013, the name was changed back to San Marino RTV.

The broadcaster currently operates two television channels (San Marino RTV and San Marino RTV Sport) and two radio stations (Radio San Marino and Radio San Marino Classic).

History

San Marino RTV was founded in August 1991 thanks to a share capital of Ente per la Radiodiffusione Sammarinese (ERAS, San Marino Broadcasting Company) and the Italian public service broadcaster, RAI. Both participated with 50% of the capital. The agreement between both parties is subject to periodic reviews to guarantee and update the public service broadcasting objectives. San Marino RTV broadcasts in Italian, the official language of San Marino.

Experimental radio broadcasts began on 27 December 1992. On 28 February 1993, Radio San Marino was launched broadcasting 24 hours a day. Experimental television broadcasts began on 24 April 1993. On 28 February 1994 a regular television service was launched, broadcasting from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M.

In July 1995, San Marino RTV became a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The establishment is also a founding member of the (C.R.I., Italian speaking radio and television broadcasting community). [1]

In 2007, San Marino RTV started expressing interest in entering the Eurovision Song Contest. On 27 November 2007, it was announced that San Marino would make its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, held in Belgrade, Serbia. After having been absent in the 2009 and 2010 contests due to financial problems, San Marino reached the final for the first time in the 2014 contest.

In 2011, San Marino RTV attempted to participate in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, but decided to withdraw in October of that year. On 25 October 2013, it was announced that San Marino would make its debut at the 2013 contest, held in Kyiv, Ukraine. [2]

On 11 October 2014, the channel opened an office in Rome with correspondent Francesca Billotti. [3]

From 22 December 2016 San Marino RTV has been broadcasting in high definition on digital terrestrial, [4] and since 22 February 2018 it has also been broadcasting in HD on satellite.

Starting 20 October 2021, the channel began broadcasting throughout Italy on channel 831 in MPEG-4 SD on RAI Mux B. [5] In December of the same year, Ludovico Di Meo was appointed General Manager of San Marino RTV, a position he held to 29 January 2023. [6]

San Marino has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 13 times, debuting in the 2008 contest, followed by participation from 2011 onward. The nation did not participate in 2009 or 2010, citing financial difficulties. Having failed to qualify in their first four attempts, the nation qualified for the contest's final for the first time in 2014. Valentina Monetta represented San Marino in 2012, 2013 and 2014, making her the first entrant to participate in three consecutive contests since the 1960s. In 2019, Serhat managed to qualify to the final, marking the second appearance of the country in a Eurovision final and achieving their best result to date of 19th place. Following the 2020 contest's cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, their 2020 candidate Senhit was again selected to represent San Marino in the following contest. She qualified to the final, making it the first time that San Marino made it to two consecutive finals.

San Marino debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008, held in Belgrade, Serbia. The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) officially confirmed San Marino's participation in the contest in November 2007 after deliberation amongst the broadcaster's shareholders.

Television in Italy was introduced in 1939, when the first experimental broadcasts began. However, this lasted for a very short time: when fascist Italy entered World War II in 1940, all transmissions were interrupted, and were resumed in earnest only nine years after the end of the war, on January 3, 1954.

It is the company's flagship television channel, and is known for broadcasting news bulletins and self-produced entertainment programming.

John Kennedy O'Connor is a television and radio broadcaster, author, and entertainment commentator. He was born in North London, England, but is a naturalized citizen of the United States. He has written, reported and broadcast for numerous media organizations, as well as writing, created and produced media events for a number of international corporations all over the world. He is best known for his work within the Eurovision Song Contest as a TV commentator and host. Until 2023, he was the news anchor for NBC and CBS Northern California channels KIEM-TV and KVIQ-LD, before moving to CBS Station KIMA-TV in Washington, as the main anchor.

San Marino participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Sammarinese national broadcaster Radiotelevisione della Repubblica di San Marino (SMRTV) internally selected Valentina Monetta with "The Social Network Song" to represent the nation in the contest. SMRTV had initially proposed a different version of the song, titled "Facebook Uh, Oh, Oh", but was instructed to modify or replace the entry due to concerns relating to commercial messaging. The entry was promoted through the creation of a music video, a promotional tour throughout Europe and interviews to the press in the lead up to the Eurovision Song Contest 2012. San Marino performed 11th in the first semi-final, held on 22 May 2012, and placed 14th, receiving 31 points and failing to qualify for the grand final. This marked their best placing in the contest to this point.

Valentina Monetta is a Sammarinese singer. She is best known for representing San Marino in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017. In the 2014 contest, Monetta became the first entrant to qualify for the final for San Marino.
