Direct Influence is a 6-piece Melbourne based electro/rock/reggae group formed and fronted by Dylan Smith and Marcus Ross. Smith (from Mahia, New Zealand) and Ross (from Gippsland, Australia) describe the group as the combination of their respective musical backgrounds - 'With two countries so close, it was only a matter of time before NZ and OZ developed a cross-Tasman sound'. [1]

Debut album

Having released 2 EPs, Direct Influence commenced development of their first studio album in 2009.

Throughout 2010, Direct Influence released and toured debut studio album 'War in My Kitchen', performed over 70 local, interstate and international shows and secured festival appearances at The Hills Are Alive, St Kilda Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Japan Music Week, [2] Rhythm & Vines Festival [3]

'War in My Kitchen' featured guest vocals on 'For My People' from ARIA Best Male Artist of 2010, Dan Sultan [4] and was officially released on 14 May 2010 through Shock Records. [5] Lead single 'Final Word Feat. EQ' received official rotation on nationally broadcast station Triple J as well as coverage of the album, [6] interviews [7] and performances across many local and community radio stations and TV performances on both Melbourne's Ch 31 and TVNZ's Good Morning.

Live performances

2010 performances included support of The Original Wailers, Chali 2Na, Kora, The Black Seeds and Bonjah.

War in My Kitchen album tour [8] consisted of 21 performances through April and May in Melbourne, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Margaret River, Fremantle, Hobart, Launceston, Auckland, Napier, Dunedin, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and several regional towns forming the single biggest tour of the band's career.

Band members

Currently, Direct Influence are backed by a four piece live performance band consisting of drums, bass, keys and lead guitar. Live drums are performed by Matt Bray from The Metals and 28 Days, Lucas Taranto (Gotye) or Pat Kilby (The Red Eyes) on Bass Guitar, Mikey Chan on Lead Guitar (Pharoahe Monch/Phrase/M-Phazes) and Jarrah Whyte on keys. Through 2010 this session musician line-up also included rotation of Ivan (Choi) Khatchoyan (of Cookin on Three Burners), Simon Mavin (of Whitesploitation) and Luke Saunders on keys.

Wolfmother is an Australian hard rock band from Sydney. Formed in 2004, the group is centred around vocalist and guitarist Andrew Stockdale, who is the only constant member of the line-up. The band has been through many personnel changes since their formation, with the current incarnation including drummer Hamish Rosser and bassist Brad Heald, both of whom are former members of The Vines. The original – and most commercially successful – line-up included bassist and keyboardist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett. Ross and Heskett left Wolfmother after four years in 2008.

Cosmic Psychos are an Australian punk rock band which formed in 1982 as Spring Plains. Founding members included Ross Knight on bass guitar and vocals; Robbie Addington on guitar and vocals; and Steve Morrow on vocals. Australian rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, described their music as "arty kind of punk noise, somewhere between The Birthday Party and a more narcotic sounding Ramones". Late in 1984 the group was renamed as Cosmic Psychos. They issued their debut album, Down on the Farm, in December 1985. Several albums have followed and were backed by national tours and international tours to Europe and North America including festivals with Mudhoney, Nirvana, L7, Helmet and Motörhead. Ground Components were an Australian soul, punk rock band. Formed December 2002 by Indra Adams on bass guitar, Joe McGuigan on lead vocals and guitar, Simon McGuigan on drums and Dallas Paxton on keyboards. Their debut album, An Eye for a Brow, a Tooth for a Pick, reached the ARIA Albums Chart. They disbanded in 2007.

James Nicholas Righton is a British musician. As well as singing, he was the keyboard-player of the London-based new rave band Klaxons, which disbanded in 2015. In March 2016, Righton announced his new project Shock Machine with a video directed by Saam Farahmand. Righton released his first solo album The Performer on Soulwax's Deewee label in March 2020.

Daddy Cool is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria in 1970 with the original line-up of Wayne Duncan, Ross Hannaford, Ross Wilson and Gary Young. Their debut single "Eagle Rock" was released in May 1971 and stayed at number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks. Their debut July 1971 LP Daddy Who? Daddy Cool also reached number 1 and became the first Australian album to sell more than 100,000 copies. The group's name came from the 1957 song "Daddy Cool" by US rock group The Rays. Daddy Cool included their version of this song on Daddy Who? Daddy Cool.

House Vs. Hurricane are an Australian post-hardcore band from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, formed in 2006. The band released their debut studio album, Perspectives in March 2010. The band's second studio album, Crooked Teeth was released in July 2012 and peaked at number 20 in the ARIA Charts.

Monique Brumby is an Australian Indie pop/rock singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. Her debut single, "Fool for You", peaked into the top 40 in the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) ARIA Singles Charts, and provided an ARIA Award for Best New Talent at the ARIA Music Awards of 1996. Her single, "Mary", won an ARIA Music Awards of 1997 for ARIA Award for Best Female Artist.

Originally the solo act of then 15-year-old Thomas Rawle in 2006, Papa vs Pretty became a three-piece band in 2008 with the addition of Rawle's friends Angus Gardiner and Tom Myers, and a quartet in 2012 with the arrival of Luke Liang. On Monday 30 June 2014, the band announced their breakup.

The Shaolin Afronauts are an Afrobeat band based in Adelaide, Australia. Their music is heavily influenced by West African Afrobeat artists such as Fela Kuti, but also incorporates elements of avant-garde jazz, soul and other traditional African and Cuban percussive rhythms. They describe their music as "interstellar futurist afro-soul".
