Education in Greater St. Louis is provided by 132 public school districts, independent private schools, parochial schools, and several public library systems. Greater St. Louis also is home to more than thirty colleges and universities.

[1] [2] Among the largest districts by enrollment in 2010 are the St. Louis Public Schools with 25,046 students, Rockwood School District with 22,382 students, and Fort Zumwalt School District with 18,840 students. [3] Greater St. Louis schools also are notable for their excellence in the state of Missouri; five local public high schools being ranked nationally in the United States by Newsweek in 2011 were from Greater St. Louis: Clayton High School in Clayton School District, Metro Academic and Classical High School in the St. Louis Public Schools, Ladue Horton Watkins High School in Ladue School District, Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood School District, and Rockwood Summit High School in Rockwood School District. [4] However, other schools have struggled financially and academically: the St. Louis Public Schools lost its accreditation and was taken over by the Missouri Board of Education, while the East St. Louis Public Schools repeatedly have been taken over by the state of Illinois due to financial problems and corruption. Several independent private schools operate in Greater St. Louis, including Whitfield School, Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, Visitation Academy of St. Louis, and John Burroughs School. Both private Catholic schools and schools under the authority of the Archdiocese of St. Louis operate in Greater St. Louis, with ten Archdiocesan high schools and more than a dozen private Catholic high schools in the region.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 21.4 percent of the adult population in St. Louis holds a bachelor's degree compared with the national average of 27 percent. Almost 209,000 students are enrolled in the area's nearly 40 colleges, universities, and technical schools. In 2006 approximately 5,287 associate degrees were granted in Greater St. Louis. Approximately 10% of the St. Louis metropolitan area consists of higher education students.
The oldest public library system in the area, the St. Louis Public Library, serves the city of St. Louis and maintains a collection of 4.7 million items, and it operates 15 branches and a central library building. [7] St. Louis County Library operates 20 branches and has a collection of 2.6 million items. Both libraries have a borrowing agreement allowing them to exchange materials.
The Municipal Library Consortium of St. Louis County is an association of nine independent municipal libraries, including the Brentwood Public Library, Ferguson Municipal Public Library, Kirkwood Public Library, Maplewood Public Library, Richmond Heights Memorial Library, Rock Hill Public Library, University City Public Library, Valley Park Community Library, and the Webster Groves Public Library. Other Missouri library systems in Greater St. Louis include the St. Charles City-County Library, which serves St. Charles County, the Powell Memorial Library, serving Troy, Missouri, the Scenic Regional Library, serving Warren and Franklin counties, [9] and the Jefferson County Library, which serves the parts of Jefferson County that are part of Fox, Windsor and Northwest school districts. In the Metro-East, library districts include the Wood River Public Library, serving the city of Wood River, Illinois, the East Alton Public Library, serving East Alton, Illinois, the Hayner Public Library, serving Alton, Illinois, [11] the Edwardsville Library, serving Edwardsville, Illinois, and the Mississippi Valley Library, serving Fairmont City and Collinsville, Illinois. St. Louis County is located in the eastern-central portion of Missouri. It is bounded by the City of St. Louis and the Mississippi River to the east, the Missouri River to the north, and the Meramec River to the south. At the 2020 census, the total population was 1,004,125, making it the most populous county in Missouri. Its county seat is Clayton. The county is included in the St. Louis, MO–IL metropolitan statistical area.
Madison County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is a part of the Metro East in southern Illinois. According to the 2020 census, it had a population of 264,776, making it the eighth-most populous county in Illinois and the most populous in the southern portion of the state. The county seat is Edwardsville, and the largest city is Granite City.
U.S. Route 67 is a major north–south U.S. highway which extends for 1,560 miles (2,511 km) in the Central United States. The southern terminus of the route is at the United States-Mexico border in Presidio, Texas, where it continues south as Mexican Federal Highway 16 upon crossing the Rio Grande. The northern terminus is at U.S. Route 52 in Sabula, Iowa. US 67 crosses the Mississippi River twice along its routing. The first crossing is at West Alton, Missouri, where US 67 uses the Clark Bridge to reach Alton, Illinois. About 240 miles (390 km) to the north, US 67 crosses the river again at the Rock Island Centennial Bridge between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. Additionally, the route crosses the Missouri River via the Lewis Bridge a few miles southwest of the Clark Bridge.
Greater St. Louis is a bi-state metropolitan statistical area in the United States with its core in both Missouri and Illinois. Its largest principal city is the independent city of St. Louis, and its largest employer is St Louis County, Missouri which lies immediately to the west. The pre-war city core is on the Mississippi Riverfront on the border with Illinois in the geographic center of the metro area. The Mississippi River bisects the metro area geographically between Illinois and Missouri; however, the Missouri portion is much more populous. St. Louis is the focus of the largest metro area in Missouri and the Illinois portion known as Metro East is the second largest metropolitan area in that state. St. Louis County is independent of the City of St. Louis and their two populations are generally tabulated separately.
Southern Illinois University is a system of public universities in the southern region of the U.S. state of Illinois. Its headquarters is in Carbondale, Illinois.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a public university in Edwardsville, Illinois in Metro-East, near St. Louis. SIUE was established in 1957 as an extension of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is the younger of the two major institutions of Southern Illinois University system, and, as of 2018, has the larger enrollment. The university offers graduate programs through its Graduate School.
The Ladue School District is a public school district in Ladue, Missouri, with four elementary, one middle, and one high school, with a special Fifth Grade Center. The district serves 4,180 total students, and employs 280 full-time classroom teachers. The total operating revenue is $49.9 mil. with $50.2 mil. operating expenses. Ladue spends $11,903 per student, and pays an average of $62,697 per teacher ($41,000-$101,542). According to Newsweek, Ladue ranks in the top 2% of public schools in the nation. It serves an area encompassing 19 sq. mi. with more than 27,000 residents. It includes all or part of 10 communities including Ladue, Creve Coeur, Crystal Lake Park, Frontenac, Huntleigh, Olivette, Richmond Heights, Town and Country, Unincorporated St. Louis County, and Westwood.
Rockwood R-VI School District is a public school district headquartered in Eureka, Missouri, serving students in St. Louis County. The Rockwood School District is St. Louis County's largest public school system, serving 22,268 students.
Eureka High School, located in Eureka, Missouri, is a secondary school in the Rockwood School District. Eureka High School was the first high school in what would become the Rockwood School District. The high school opened in 1908 and was fully accredited within four years.
Marquette High School, located in Clarkson Valley, Missouri, is a secondary school in the Rockwood School District of St. Louis County, Missouri. A majority of students attending Marquette High School come from Crestview Middle School and Selvidge Middle School.
Lafayette High School, located in Wildwood, Missouri, is a secondary school in the Rockwood School District.
Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis was a group of publications in the St. Louis region owned by Lee Enterprises. The chain served St. Louis and St. Charles counties in Missouri and Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties in Illinois.
The Suburban Conference, formally the St. Louis Suburban Public High School Athletic and Activities Association (SPHSAAA), is a Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) recognized high school extracurricular league, based near Creve Coeur, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. The conference is one of the largest in the state, comprising 31 member schools from St. Louis County and Jefferson County.
The SIUE School of Nursing is an academic unit of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) located in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States. The school has nearly nine hundred (900) students enrolled in its undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs.
Rockwood Summit High School is a public high school in unincorporated St. Louis County, Missouri that is part of the Rockwood School District. Summit opened in 1993 on the same day as Marquette High School, another Rockwood high school.
U.S. Route 67 is the portion of a north-south highway in Missouri that starts at the Arkansas state line south of Neelyville and ends at the Illinois state line northeast of West Alton.
