The Gallup Refinery, also known as the Ciniza Refinery, was an American oil refinery. The facility is located in northwestern New Mexico along Interstate 40, approximately 20 miles east of the city center of Gallup and near the town of Jamestown, New Mexico. The facility occupies 880 acres [1] in McKinley County and employed approximately 220 employees as of March 2019. The facility processed approximately 26,000 barrels of crude oil per day and produced gasoline, diesel, heavy fuel oil, and propane. [2]

History

The facility was originally built by El Paso Natural Gas Company and purchased in March 1964 by the Shell Oil Company. [3]

In October 1981, the facility was purchased by Giant Industries, Inc. [4]

In April 2004, the facility became the subject of a Chemical Safety Board investigation following a fire and explosion at the hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit. Four workers were seriously injured. [5]

In November 2006, Western Refining agreed to purchase the facility, with the transaction closing in Q1 2007. [6]

In November 2016, Tesoro announced the acquisition of Western Refining. [7] Following the acquisition, Tesoro changes its name to Andeavor in August 2017.

In May 2018, Marathon Petroleum announced the purchase of Andeavor, [8] becoming the largest refinery operator in the United States. The merger was completed in October 2018.

In April 2020, Marathon announced that the refinery would be idled, citing decreased demand for refined products amid the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic. [9]

In August 2020, Marathon announced that the refinery would be permanently closed, with operations expected to cease by October. [10]

The 2009 Cataño oil refinery fire was a fire that began with an explosion on October 23, 2009, and was extinguished on October 25 at the Caribbean Petroleum Corporation (CAPECO) oil refinery and oil depot in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. While the fire and subsequent explosion occurred close to the city of Cataño, it technically occurred within the borders of Bayamón, even though Cataño was more affected by fumes and evacuation. There were no fatalities, but 3 people were injured.

The Mandan Refinery is the largest oil refinery in North Dakota, partially located within the northeastern corner of the city limits of Mandan, ND just north off of Exit 153 of Interstate 94. Jamestown is an unincorporated community located along Interstate 40 in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. El Paso Natural Gas Company built a refinery at the Continental Divide in New Mexico around the area of 35.48698357712149, -108.4264608980443. The refinery was known locally as the Gallup Refinery or the Ciniza Refinery. By 1964, El Paso Gas sold the refinery to the Shell Oil Company. Then in 1982, Giant Oil Refining purchased the refinery from Shell. In 1987. Giant built the largest truck stop and retail facility in their chain one mile south from the refinery. On June 7, 2003, Giant sold its travel center in Jamestown to Pilot Travel Centers. Pilot Travel Center #305 houses Jamestown's post office; the post office has ZIP code 87347. Also inside the travel center's mall are a Subway and a Denny's as well as a thirty-seat theater. Near the mall, and still part of the Pilot Travel Center, is a Bosselman Boss Shop available for full service truck servicing and repair.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Marathon Anacortes Refinery</span> Petroleum refinery in Washington, United States

The Marathon Anacortes Refinery, prior to October 2018 known as the Andeavor Anacortes Refinery and prior to August 2017 known as the Tesoro Anacortes Refinery, is a petroleum refinery located about 70 miles north of Seattle on March Point, just outside Anacortes, Washington. The refinery has operated in Anacortes since 1955, and has 425 full-time employees. It has a 120,000 barrels per day (bpd) capacity and is operated by Marathon Petroleum.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Puget Sound Refinery</span>

HF Sinclair operates the Puget Sound Refinery located on March Point outside of Anacortes, Wash. The plant is the largest taxpayer in Skagit County and one of the county's largest employers. The refinery has a capacity of 145,000 barrels a day, making it the 52nd largest in the United States, in 2015, with facilities that include a delayed coker, fluid catalytic cracker, polymerization unit and alkylation units. Based on the secondary processing units in place, the facility likely follows a 3-2-1 crack spread. HF Sinclair’s refinery produces three grades of gasoline, fuel oil, diesel fuel, propane and butane. This plant is currently the only refinery in Washington state unable to accommodate tight oil via rail. The permitting process is currently underway for the proposed 60,000 b/d unloading capacity of the East Gate Rail Project.
