General Hewett, sometimes spelled General Hewart or General Hewitt, was a three-deck sailing ship launched at Calcutta in 1811. The British East India Company (EIC) purchased her to use her in the China trade. However, unlike most East Indiamen, on her first voyage from England she transported convicts from England to Australia. Thereafter, she performed five voyages for the EIC. The EIC sold her in 1830 and she then became a general merchantman. In 1864 she was sold for a hulk or to be broken up.

Career

General Hewett was admitted to the Registry of Great Britain on 14 November 1813. [4] She first appears in the Register of Shipping in 1814 with M'Tagart as both master and owner. [3] By then her owner had sold her to the EIC. [1] At the time the EIC purchased General Hewitt, the company had only three vessels of its own. It chartered all the rest, including the ones built expressly for the EIC's trade. [7]

Convict transport (1813–14)

Under the command of Captain Percy Earl, General Hewitt sailed from England on 26 August 1813, with 300 male convicts, 104 crew, 70 soldiers, 15 women and five children. The soldiers came from the 46th Regiment of Foot and guarded the convicts. She sailed in company with Wanstead and Windham, and under the escort of HMS Akbar, at least for the early part of the voyage. [8] The convoy also included Roxburgh Castle, which was carrying military equipment to the Cape of Good Hope, and Chapman, which was transporting an army detachment to the Cape and Île de France (Mauritius). [8]

General Hewett arrived at Port Jackson on 7 February 1814, having travelled via Madeira and Rio de Janeiro. [9]

The voyage took 165 days, during which 34 male convicts died, [10] a large number, mostly of contagious dysentery. The losses on General Hewitt, Surry, and Three Bees led in 1814 to Surgeon William Redfern preparing a report for Governor Lachlan Macquarie on the sanitary problems of the ships transporting convicts to New South Wales. This report led to a great improvement in conditions, including the appointment of a medical officer for each voyage.

General Hewett left Port Jackson on 6 April bound for Ceylon. [11] She carried the main contingent of the 73rd Regiment of Foot (10 officers, including the commanding officer, Lt. Col. Maurice O'Connell, 362 rank and file, 96 women, and 163 children), which the 46th Regiment was replacing. [12] They arrived in Colombo on 18 August 1814.

EIC

General Hewett made five trips to China or India for the EIC between 1816 and 1825. [5]

Voyage #1 (1816-17)

Captain Walter Campbell left Portsmouth on 9 February 1816, in company with HMS Alceste and the brig HMS Lyra, which were carrying Lord Amherst on his 1816 diplomatic mission to China. The group reached Madeira on 19 February. Lyra and General Hewitt went on to Simon's Bay on 13 April, Batavia on 12 June, Hong Kong bay on 10 July, and Whampoa on 22 October. [2] Alceste sailed to Rio de Janeiro and met up with the other two vessels on 9 June at the Anjere roads. [13]

After Lord Amherst had landed at Taku to proceed to Peking, Alceste and General Hewett had gone to Canton. There the authorities refused permission for Alceste to ascend the river and ordered the local merchants to deny General Hewitt any cargo. Alceste fired several broadsides at the fort and junks that attempted to block her way, and proceeded to anchor at the usual place. Shortly thereafter Alceste received fresh provisions, and General Hewett a cargo. The firing that had taken place at the mouth of the river was officially described as a "friendly interchange of salutes". [14]

On her return voyage General Hewett crossed the Second Bar on 4 December and reached St Helena on 12 March 1817. She arrived at the Downs on 12 May. [2] Part of the presents for the Emperor of China, which Lord Amherst had not been able to deliver due to a disagreement between the British and the Court over protocol, had been sold in Canton and General Hewett was returning with the rest. [15]

Voyage #2 (1818-19)

Captain Peter Cameron left the Downs on 28 May 1818, bound for Bengal and Madras. On 14 September General Hewett arrived at the New Anchorage, Calcutta. As she made her way back down the coast, she reached Coninga on 30 December, and then Madras on 9 January 1819. Homeward bound, she reached Colombo on 28 February, Port Louis on 13 April, and St Helena on 30 June. She arrived at Long Reach on September. [2]

Voyage #3 (1820-21)

Captain James Pearson left the Downs on 15 April 1820 for China. [2] On 7 August, while navigating Clement's Strait, the eastern branch of Gaspar Strait between Banca and Billiton islands, General Hewett struck a rock and was aground for about 15 minutes. The rock came to be known as General Hewitt's Rock. [16]

General Hewett arrived at Whampoa on 28 August. On the return leg of her voyage she crossed the Second Bar on 5 November, reaching the Cape on 28 February 1821 and St Helena on 31 March. She arrived at Long Reach on 30 May. [2]

This return voyage was not without incident as His Majesty's Customs at Cape Town seized her cargo and that of Marchioness of Ely on account of defective manifests. This case also involved an issue of jurisdiction between the Vice admiralty court and the Court of Justice. The EIC's agent at Cape Town had to post bond in order for the vessels to continue on their journeys.

Voyage #4 (1822-23)

Captain Pearson left the Downs again on 19 June 1822 for Bengal. [2] On this voyage she carried part of the 16th Lancers, which regiment was transferring to India. [17] General Hewett reached the Cape on 1 October and arrived at the New Anchorage on 23 December. She was back at the Cape on 4 May 1823, and St Helena 16 days later. She arrived at Blackwall, on the Thames on 26 July. [2]

Voyage #5 (1824-25)

Captain Thomas William Barrow, [18] who had served aboard General Hewett as first officer on her previous voyage, [18] left the Downs on 23 June 1824 for Bengal. [General Hewett arrived at the New Anchorage on 30 October. She left Bengal on 8 March 1825 and reached St Helena on 24 May. [2] General Hewitt, Barrow, commander, was reported to be off Weymouth on 18 July. She arrived at Long Reach on 20 July. [2]

The EIC sold General Hewett to William Tindall on 22 September 1830 for £6250. [2]

Merchantman

As a merchantman, General Hewett made numerous voyages to Australia carrying immigrants.

General Hewett received a new deck, wales, and major repairs in 1842. She left London on 20 October 1845, under the command of Captain Hart. On this voyage she carried passengers and cargo and arrived at Port Jackson on 21 January 1846.

Departing Plymouth on 11 August 1848, under the command of John Gatenby, she carried passengers and cargo and arrived at Port Jackson on 13 November 1848. She left afterwards for India.

Leaving London on 24 August 1852, under the command of John Gatenby, she carried passengers and cargo and arrived at Port Jackson on 24 December 1852.

In 1854 William Tindall sold General Hewitt to J. Michael, of London, for £6,250. [5] General Hewett was sheathed in felt and copper fastened with iron bolts in 1854.

On 3 April 1756 Michael sold General Hewitt to J. Wilson, of London, for £4,550. [5]

General Hewett, under the command of Christopher Loudt, master, left Plymouth for on 5 July 1856 and arrived at Portland, Victoria, on 9 October. She carried 366 immigrants. [6]

These amounted to 320½ statute adults, with the fare per statute adult being £13 4s 6d. On the voyage about four or five children were born, and the number of deaths was about the same. Agricultural laborers (105) and female domestics (60) accounted for about half of the immigrants. Married couples numbered 74, and single men numbered 82. There was labour strife on board with crewmen jumping ship when she arrived, others refusing to work on the voyage, and two assaulting Loudt. [6]

In 1864 General Hewitt was sold for a hulk or to be broken up. [5]

Chilean ship <i>Lautaro</i> (1818)

Lautaro was initially the British East Indiaman Windham, built by Perry, Wells & Green at the Blackwall Shipyard for the East India Company (EIC) and launched in 1800. She made seven voyages to India, Ceylon, and China for the EIC. In 1809–10, the French captured her twice, but the British also recaptured her twice. The Chilean Navy bought her in 1818 and she then served in the Chilean Navy, taking part in several actions during the liberation wars in Chile and Peru. From 1824 she was a training ship until she was sold in 1828.

<i>Fortitude</i> (1780 EIC ship)

Fortitude was a merchant vessel built in 1780 on the River Thames. A French frigate captured her in 1782 while she was on the return leg of her maiden voyage to India as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). However, the British recaptured her in October 1782. The EIC purchased her and sent her back to England. There, in 1785, George Macartney Macauley purchased her and renamed her Pitt. She then performed five voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1786 and 1798. In between, she made one journey transporting convicts from England to New South Wales. She was broken up in 1801.

Royal Admiral was an East Indiaman, launched in 1777 on the River Thames. She made eight trips for the East India Company (EIC) before she was sold. She then continued to trade. She made two trips carrying convicts from England to Australia, one as an East Indiaman in 1791, and a second in 1800. On this second voyage as a convict transport she was present at a notable naval action.

Minerva was a merchantman launched in 1773 in the East Indies. She traded there for more than 20 years before she made three voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). The first EIC voyage was from 1796 to 1798. In 1799 she transported convicts from Ireland to Australia while under charter to the EIC. From Australia she sailed to Bengal, and then back to Britain. She underwent repairs in 1802 and then traveled to St Helena and Bengal for the EIC. She was lost in 1805 or 1806 under circumstances that are currently unclear.

<i>Earl Cornwallis</i> (1783 ship)

Earl Cornwallis was a three-decker East Indiaman launched in 1783 on the River Thames. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She then made one voyage transporting convicts from England to New South Wales. By 1809, she was no longer listed.

William Pitt was a three-decker sailing ship, built in Liverpool in 1803. She made three complete voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), and on the first of these she transported convicts to New South Wales. In December 1813 she was lost in a gale to the east of Algoa Bay while homeward bound from her fourth voyage.

<i>Providence</i> (1807 ship)

Providence was a merchant ship built at Calcutta, India, and launched in 1807. She made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), on one of which she delivered convicts to New South Wales. The ship was scuttled at St Martin's, Isles of Scilly in 1833 after grounding while on a voyage from London to Bombay, India.

Earl Spencer was an East Indiaman, launched in 1795 for the British East India Company (EIC). She made seven voyages for the EIC until in 1811-12 the government took her up to transport convicts to Australia in 1813. On her return voyage from Australia she sailed via China, where she carried a cargo back to England for the EIC.

Indefatigable was a square-rigged, three-decked, three-masted merchant ship launched in 1799 at Whitby for James Atty & Co. for the West Indies trade. In 1804 she served as an armed defense ship and recaptured a merchantman that a privateer had captured. She was a transport in the 1805–1806 British invasion of the Dutch Cape colony. She twice transported convicts to Australia; on the first trip she was chartered to the British East India Company (EIC). She burned to the waterline in 1815.

Baring was a three-decker East Indiaman that made six voyages to India for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1802 and 1814. Her owners then sold her and under new owners she made two voyages transporting convicts to Australia. Her last appearance in Lloyd's Register is in 1820.

Guildford was a two-decker merchant ship launched in 1810. She transported convicts to New South Wales. Of her eight voyages delivering convicts, for three she was under charter to the British East India Company (EIC). She underwent major repairs in 1819, her hull was sheathed in copper in 1822; in 1825 she received new wales, top sides and deck, the copper was repaired and other repairs. Guildford was lost without a trace in 1831.

Broxbornebury, was a three-decker sailing ship launched in 1812. She made four voyages for the East India Company (EIC), one voyage transporting convicts to Australia, and numerous other sailing voyages. She was sold in 1844 for breaking up.

<i>Larkins</i> (1808 ship)

Larkins made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), all as an "extra ship", i.e. under contract. On two of these voyages she first transported convicts to Australia. She also made one convict voyage independently of the EIC. She traded extensively between England and India or China, and in this twice suffered serious but not fatal maritime mishaps. In 1853 she became a coal hulk at Albany, Western Australia, and remained there until she was broken up in 1876.

<i>Minerva</i> (1805 ship) British merchant and convict vessel (1805–1826)

Minerva was launched at Lancaster, Lancashire, in 1805. Following trading with Central and South America, she made two voyages under charter to the British East India Company (EIC) between 1811 and 1814. She also made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia between 1818 and 1824, one to Van Diemen's Land and three voyages to New South Wales. She was broken up in 1826.

Boyne was launched at Calcutta in 1807. In 1809 she sailed to England. She was sold to the Danes, but by 1811 was under English ownership under the name Moffat. She then made seven voyages as a "regular ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). After the EIC exited its maritime activities in 1833–34, Moffat made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia: one voyage to Port Jackson and three to Van Diemen's Land. She also made at least one voyage carrying immigrants to South Australia, and later regularly traded between Liverpool and Bombay. She was last listed in 1856.

Barrosa was launched in 1811 at Cossipore. She sailed to England and then made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC); during this period she also made one voyage carrying immigrants to South Africa. After the EIC gave up its maritime activities in 1833-1834, Barossa became a transport. She made three voyages transporting convicts to Australia. She was lost in 1847, without loss of life, while transporting contract labourers from Madras to Jamaica.

<i>Lady Castlereagh</i> (1803 EIC ship) Ship launched in 1803

Lady Castlereagh was launched in 1803. She made six apparently uneventful voyages to India and one to China for the British East India Company (EIC). She left the EIC's service and made one voyage transporting convicts to Australia. She was returning from having delivered her convicts to Port Jackson and Van Diemen's Land when she was damaged in October 1818 a gale at Madras. She was surveyed there, condemned, and sold for breaking up.

James Sibbald was launched at Bombay in 1803. She was a "country ship", a British vessel that traded only east of the Cape of Good Hope. A French privateer captured her in late 1804, but she quickly returned to British ownership in Bombay in a process that is currently obscure. She made several voyages for the British East India Company (EIC).

Mangles was built in Calcutta in 1803 and immediately sailed for England. Including that voyage, she made a total of six voyages as an "extra ship" for the British East India Company (EIC). Between her first as second voyages for the EIC a French privateer captured her. Mangles also made nine voyages transporting convicts to Australia: eight voyages to Port Jackson, one to Hobart Town, and one in which she delivered some convicts to Port Jackson but carried most of her charges to Norfolk Island. She was last listed in 1844.

Layton was launched in 1814 at Lancaster, possibly as a West Indiaman. She twice sailed to India under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC), once as a troopship. The EIC later chartered Layton three times for single voyages to India and Java. She made four voyages transporting convicts to Australia. She also made two voyages carrying emigrants from the United Kingdom to New South Wales. She was lost in 1847.
