The Geokichla thrushes are medium-sized mostly insectivorous or omnivorous birds in the thrush family, Turdidae. They were traditionally listed in the Zoothera , but molecular phylogenetic studies published in 2008 led to their placement in a separate genus.

Taxonomy

The genus Geokichla was introduced in 1836 by the German naturalist Salomon Müller with Turdus citrinus Latham, 1790, the orange-headed thrush, as the type species. [2] [3] [4] The genus name combines the Ancient Greek geō- meaning "ground-" with kikhlē meaning "thrush. [5]

These species were formerly placed in the genus Zoothera . Molecular phylogenetic analysis by Gary Voelker and collaborators published in 2008 found that Zoothera was polyphyletic. [6] [7] To create monophyletic genera 21 species were moved from Zoothera to the resurrected genus Geokichla. [8]

It is also known as the African mountain thrush, or northern olive thrush The species was formerly treated as conspecific with the olive thrush but the species were split based on the genetic differences. The ranges do not overlap. The Abyssinian thrush is found in Eritrea and other parts of the Horn of Africa, as well as an area to the southeast extending from the African Great Lakes region to north eastern Zambia and Malawi.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Turdinae</span> Subfamily of thrushes

Turdinae are a subfamily of passerine birds in the family Turdidae. They are the sister clade to the subfamily Myadestinae. The divergence between myadestines and turdines occurred 11 million years ago in the Serravallian. Within the turdines they can split into three subgroups: Zoothera occupying a basal position, the second consisting of forest thrush genera and the remaining group closer to Turdus.

The Mauritius ground thrush, Geokichla longitarsus, was a species of long-legged thrush within the Turdidae family. Endemic to Mauritius, the Mauritius ground thrush has since gone extinct, probably during the 14th century.
