Gongju station is a station on South Korea's Honam High Speed Railway. [1]
Daejeon is South Korea's fifth-largest metropolis, with a population of 1.5 million as of 2019. Located in a central lowland valley alongside forested hills and the Geum River, the city is known for its technology and research institutions, and for celebrating its natural environment, with most mountains, hot springs, and rivers freely open for public use. Daejeon serves as a hub of transportation for major rail and road routes, and is approximately 50 minutes from the capital, Seoul, by KTX or SRT high speed rail.
South Chungcheong Province, also known as Chungnam, is a province of South Korea in the Hoseo region in the southwest of the Korean Peninsula. The Honam high-speed railway, also known as Honam HSR, is a high-speed rail between Osong and Mokpo in South Korea. The line is a part of Korail's Korea Train Express (KTX) system, accelerating Seoul–Mokpo and Seoul–Gwangju KTX high-speed services which currently use the existing conventional Honam Line. On April 1, 2015, the line was inaugurated by the South Korean President Park Geun-hye with the attendance of 1200 invited guests and members of the public at Gwangju Songjeong Station in Gwangju, the line's terminus. The line diverges from Osong station on the Gyeongbu high-speed railway, and stops at Gongju, Iksan, Jeongeup Stations. Journey times between Seoul and Gwangju has been cut from 2 h 40 min to just 90 min, making daily commuting possible. The Honam HSR is intended to bring business, and economic opportunities to the province of Jeollanam-do, which has seen slower development than other parts of South Korea. The line has been open to the public since April 2, 2015 for revenue service.
Dujeong Station is a railway station located in northern Cheonan. The station opened on the Gyeongbu Line – the line from Seoul to Busan – on June 15, 1979, and was put under the control of Cheonan Station on July 1, 1985. It has also been served by Seoul Subway Line 1 since January 20, 2005. The station is close to Gongju University, the Cheonan campuses of Sangmyung University, Dankook University, Hoseo University and Baekseok University. It is also in proximity of Cheonan Bus Terminal, Cheonan Industrial Complex, Cheonan Sindae Elementary School, Bugil Academy and Bugil Girls' High School. Technically, the station is also on the Cheonan Connection Line, though this has only two stops: Cheonan and Dujeong. Very close to the station you can find a large movie theater (CINUS) with restaurants and snack shops.
Gongju National Museum is a national museum in Gongju, South Korea. The Gongju National Museum holds 10,000 artifacts including 19 national treasures and 3 treasures excavated in Daejeon and Chungcheongnam-do areas, especially artifacts from Tomb of King Muryeong.
The Battle of Ugeumchi took place in the Ugeumchi area, from October 23 to November 11, 1894. It was a conflict between different factions, including the Donghak peasant army, the Capital Guards Command consisting of the Palace Guards (Gyeongricheong), Royal Escort Palace Guards (Jangwiyeong), and the Metropolitan Guards (Tongwiyeong), and the new well-trained Japanese-style Military Training Division (Hullyeondae), which were the elite forces of the Joseon government equipped with modern weapons and tactics. Despite the overwhelming numerical advantage of the peasant army, they were unable to break through the defensive line of the suppressing forces, who had superior weapons and tactics. The defeat in Ugeumchi led to the rapid disintegration of the peasant army and the loss of momentum in the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
