Gordon Tsai, more widely known by his stage name Gowe (pronounced 'go'), is an American Hip Hop artist from Seattle, Washington. To date, he has released three full-length albums and one EP as a solo musician.

Gowe debuted with We are Hypergiants in 2012 as an independent musician. [1] Later that year, he released the Summer Breeze Sonatas EP, featuring five tracks. [2] The Korean Edit of We Are Hypergiants released in early 2015 through the musician's partnership with independent record label Good Fruit Co. [3] [4] The rapper released his sophomore studio effort, Music Beautiful, on March 30, 2015. [5] In 2019, Gowe made his return to music by releasing various singles and followed up with his studio EP Nostalgia Forever on May 5, 2020. [6] Gowe released his third full length LP Jazznight on May 14, 2021. [7]

Life and career

Personal life

Gordon was born in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in Beacon Hill, Seattle, Washington, and was largely influenced at an early age by the music of New York rapper Nas. [8] He was raised in a Chinese-American family, and at the age of eighteen, he discovered he was adopted. [9]

Musical career

Gowe's first notable appearance as a musician was in 2010, when he performed as one of eight competitors in the first annual Kollaboration Seattle showcase. [10] [11] Soon afterwards, the musician began building a following on YouTube, earning thousands of views per video. [12]

His professional musical career began with his debut studio album We Are Hypergiants, released on June 17, 2012. [13] [14] [15] The album featured 11 tracks, featuring guest appearances by well-known singers Travis Graham (of New Heights), Erin Kim, Jennifer Chung, Paul Kim, and Sam Ock. [16] [17] The rapper also released the three singles "I Wonder," [18] "Star in My Eyes," [19] and "First Flight" [20] [21] with accompanying music video performances around the time of the album's release.

Shortly after the release of We Are Hypergiants, Wong Fu Productions used track 11, "Star in My Eyes" as the official theme song in 2013 for the Take Your Shot Campaign, launched by Wong Fu in partnership with AT&T. [22] The single was also featured in The White Frog film's original soundtrack as one of 10 musical performances. [23] Korean Pop blog allkpop also featured "I Wonder" from the album, highlighting it as "an incredibly poignant piece that really grasps at your heartstrings with its emotional, yet thoughtful lyrics." [24]

On December 2, 2012, Gowe released a free five-track EP titled Summer Breeze Sonatas. This project was featured on Christian Hip Hop outlet Rapzilla [25] and Hip Hop outlet DJ Booth. [26]

Not long afterwards, the rapper released a free single titled "Aurora" with an accompanying music video performance featuring original animation. [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] Shortly after its February 18, 2013 release, the music video was featured on entertainment website IGN, [32] video game website ScrewAttack, [33] and Christian Hip Hop outlet Rapzilla. [34] The video quickly garnered over 200,000 views.

On June 30, 2013, Gowe was interviewed by Christian Hip Hop publication Jam The Hype. [35]

A year later, the musician announced plans to join independent label Good Fruit Co's artist roster. [36]

Also in 2014, Gowe joined hip hop artists MC Jin, Sam Ock, J. Han, CL, NAK, and Mickey Cho on the Fearless Tour hosted by independent record label Good Fruit Co. [37] [38] The national tour brought the Seattle rapper to Alameda, California, Irvine, California, Centreville, Virginia, and Germantown, Maryland. [39] [40] [41] He was one of several artists who gathered to make history as the first time every Asian American Christian Hip Hop artist stood in one room. [42]

On November 16, 2014, Gowe released "Lavender," the first single off of his sophomore studio album, Music Beautiful. [43] The single was released with an accompanying music video performance, which was featured on music blog Potholes in My Blog [44] and Christian Hip Hop outlet Rapzilla [45]

On February 6, 2015, the Korean Edit of We Are Hypergiants was released in South Korea through Gowe's partnership with Good Fruit Co. [46] [47]

Gowe released his sophomore studio album, Music Beautiful, on March 30, 2015, featuring 10 tracks. [48] [49]

In 2019, Gowe returned to music by releasing his highly anticipated single "Worth The Wait" Feat. Sam Ock, a follow up to the rapper's popular "Wait For You". [50]

On May 5, 2020, Gowe released his second LP Nostalgia Forever, a synthwave hip-hop album. [51]

On May 14, 2021, Gowe released his third full length LP Jazznight. In the album, Gowe discusses meeting his biological mother "Face to Face", welcoming a daughter "Arie", his voice as an Asian American "Americana", and features appearances by NAK, Uzuhan, Jennifer Chung, ESAE, postmoderndisco, and Mickey Cho. Rehab is the fourth studio album by Christian hip hop artist Lecrae. It was released on September 28, 2010 on Reach Records. According to the Reach Records website, the album's "motto" is "The Christian life is an entrance into rehab." Centered on release and freedoms from inhibiting addictions and habits, Rehab is a highly conceptual album. Rehab is nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. The album was named the Best Album of 2010 in the "Best of 2010: Rapzilla.com's Staff Picks" awards, and Lecrae was also named Artist of the Year. The song "Background" and the album itself were nominated for Rap/Hip Hop Recorded Song of the Year and Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year, respectively, at the 42nd Annual GMA Dove Awards.

<i>Church Clothes</i> 2012 mixtape by Lecrae

Church Clothes is the first mixtape by Christian hip hop artist Lecrae, released for free on May 10, 2012, and hosted by DJ Don Cannon. It featured No Malice of Clipse on the song "Darkest Hour", and included production work by 9th Wonder, Boi-1da, S1 and Street Symphony. Label-mates Tedashii and Andy Mineo, as well as other fellow Christian hip-hop artists such as Dre Murray, Thi'sl, Swoope, Christon Gray, and Braille, also made appearances on the album. The mixtape was downloaded 100,000 times in 48 hours, and met with critical acclaim. It received controversy in Christian media upon its release due to its condemnation of hypocrisy in the Christian Church and Lecrae's collaboration with the mainstream producer Don Cannon. A shorter, remastered EP version was released on iTunes on June 25, 2012. The EP debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Christian Albums and Gospel Albums charts.

Gravity is the sixth studio album by American Christian hip hop artist Lecrae, released on September 4, 2012. The album features appearances from Big K.R.I.T., Mathai, Ashthon Jones, Sho Baraka and Mali Music, along with labelmates Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, Derek Minor, who was formerly known as PRo, and Tedashii. Producers on the album include DJ Khalil, Street Symphony's Heat Academy, and The Watchmen. The first single off the album, "I Know", was released on July 24, 2012, and was followed by "Tell the World" featuring Mali Music on August 15, 2012, and "Mayday" featuring Big K.R.I.T. and Ashthon Jones on August 30, 2012. The discography of American Christian hip hop artist Andy Mineo, formerly known as C-Lite, consists of three studio albums, three mixtapes, one compilation album, twenty-one singles, including seven as a featured performer, fourteen music videos, including six as a featured artist, and fifteen guest appearances on various albums. Originally from Syracuse, Mineo initially achieved success as a producer in Upstate New York, and was a member of the hip hop group Fat Camp, signed to Syracuse University's Marshall Street Records. After moving to New York City where he re-dedicated his life to Christ, he closed down his production studio and restarted his career. He released his first mixtape Sin is Wack Vol. 1 in 2009. After providing sung vocals for the song "Background" by Lecrae from the album Rehab, he experienced a surge in popularity and became highly sought after for collaborations. His 2011 single "In My City" featuring Efrain from Doubledge also garnered attention, as did his appearance on the song "Reverse" by Tedashii from Blacklight. He signed to Reach Records in 2011 and dropped his stage name "C-Lite" in favor of his legal name. Under this name he released another mixtape, Formerly Known, in 2011. In May 2012 he debuted a four episode web series entitled Saturday Morning Car-Tunez in which he remixed classic hip hop songs. Derek Johnson, Jr., better known by his stage name Derek Minor and former stage name PRo, is an American Christian hip hop artist, record producer, entrepreneur, actor, and screenwriter. He co-founded the hip-hop record label Reflection Music Group (RMG) with Doc Watson, and signed to Reach Records in a joint venture between the two labels in 2011. In 2012, Johnson announced that he had changed his stage name from Pro to Derek Minor. In 2014, he announced that as his two-album contract with Reach was complete, he would no longer be publishing releases through that label.

Reach Records is an American independent record label specializing in Christian hip hop. The label was founded in 2004 by Ben Washer and the hip-hop artist Lecrae. In addition to Lecrae, the Reach Records roster contains artists like Tedashii, Trip Lee, Andy Mineo, 1K Phew, WHATUPRG, Wande, Hulvey, and Limoblaze. The hip-hop collective 116 operates under the label and consists primarily of the label's solo acts. The artists Sho Baraka, Derek Minor, Aha Gazelle, KB and Gawvi were formerly signed to the label, and DJ Official was under the label until his death.

Beautiful Eulogy is a Christian experimental hip hop group and production team from Portland, Oregon, signed to the label Humble Beast. Composed of rappers Braille and Odd Thomas and producer Courtland Urbano, the group coalesced in 2011 while the three artists were involved in the creation of Braille's seventh release, Native Lungs. Known for its experimental and eclectic sound, the group melds myriad styles of hip hop with genres such as folk, electronic, hymn tunes, and modern worship music. After contributing a song to the charity compilation King Kulture and making a guest appearance on Lecrae's Church Clothes, the band released its debut album, Satellite Kite, on June 19, 2012. A second album, Instruments of Mercy, came out on October 29, 2013. Called one of the most innovative hip hop groups in Portland, Beautiful Eulogy has met with critical acclaim, with particular praise directed at the group's creative, unconventional sound and deep theological lyrics.

Instruments of Mercy is the second studio album by Portland, Oregon-based experimental hip hop trio Beautiful Eulogy, released through Humble Beast Records on October 29, 2013, in both free and commercial format. Like its predecessor, the album features a highly eclectic folk-hip hop fusion melded with numerous other styles such as electronic, indie, hymn tunes, and contemporary worship music. Courtland Urbano, the main producer of the trio, eschewed the use of digitally-generated effects and instrumentation in composing the music for Instruments of Mercy, instead relying solely on analog and natural sounds. A single from the album, "Vital Lens", was released as a digital download on September 10, 2013. Nathan John Feuerstein, known by his initials NF, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He has released two EPs, I'm Free (2012), and a self-titled EP in 2014 with Capitol CMG. His first major-label album, Mansion, was released on March 31, 2015. His second studio album, Therapy Session, was released on April 22, 2016, and peaked at number 12 on the US Billboard 200. <i>Reborn</i> (Manafest album) 2015 studio album by Manafest

Reborn is the eighth studio album by the Christian rapper Manafest. It was independently released on October 2, 2015. The album was distributed by The Fuel Music. The release was fan-funded through a PledgeMusic campaign and is Manafest's first fully independent album in over a decade.

Gabriel Alberto Azucena who goes by the stage name GAWVI, formerly G-Styles, is an American Christian hip hop artist and music producer, formerly for Reach Records. He was born on September 23, 1988 in the Bronx, New York. He has released three extended plays, five albums, and twenty-three singles including his songs; "In the Water" and "Late Nights." His career commenced in 2008, doing production work for Lecrae and Trip Lee, who continue to be his most consistent collaborators. In early 2016, he was officially signed to Reach Records. In early 2022, Reach Records ended their professional relationship with Gawvi due to allegations of him sending multiple women unsolicted sexually explicit photos of himself.
