Green Power Forum

The Green Power Forum was an English group created by companies in the renewable energy sector to assist organisations and businesses in becoming more energy efficient.

Organisation

The Green Power Forum hosts conferences aiming to advise on the financial benefits of renewable technologies, government legislation, products, and technologies. [1] [2] Delegates attend from sectors including construction, facilities managers, energy managers, engineers and architects. [3] The first conference was held in Liverpool in October 2009.

The chairman of GPF is Mark McManus, [4] the managing director of heat pump specialist Stiebel Eltron UK. Other members of the Green Power Board include North West Energy Support Agency, Envirolink Northwest, underfloor heating supplier Nu-Heat, sustainable energy consultants and installers ISO Energy UK and Liverpool Chamber of Commerce. [5]

Renewable heat is an application of renewable energy referring to the generation of heat from renewable sources; for example, feeding radiators with water warmed by focused solar radiation rather than by a fossil fuel boiler. Renewable heat technologies include renewable biofuels, solar heating, geothermal heating, heat pumps and heat exchangers. Insulation is almost always an important factor in how renewable heating is implemented.

The UK Government programme was administered by BERR and ran from 1 April 2006 until its closure to new applications on 24 May 2010. The scheme was replaced by the Renewable Heat Incentive in November 2011.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sustainable development in Scotland</span>

Sustainable development in Scotland has a number of distinct strands. The idea of sustainable development was used by the Brundtland Commission which defined it as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." At the 2005 World Summit it was noted that this requires the reconciliation of environmental, social and economic demands - the "three pillars" of sustainability. These general aims are being addressed in a diversity of ways by the public, private, voluntary and community sectors in Scotland.

Mandatory renewable energy targets are part of government legislated schemes which require electricity merchandisers to source-specific amounts of aggregate electricity sales from renewable energy sources according to a fixed time frame. The objective of these schemes is to promote renewable energy and decrease dependency on fossil fuels. If this results in an additional expenditure of electricity, the additional cost is distributed across most customers by increases in other tariffs. The cost of this measure is therefore not funded by the government budgets, except for costs of establishing and monitoring the scheme and any audit and enforcement actions. As the cost of renewable energy has become cheaper than other sources, meeting and exceeding a renewable energy target will also reduce the expenditure of electricity to consumers.

WREN is a major non-profit organization registered in the United Kingdom with charitable status and affiliated to UNESCO, the Deputy Director General of which is its honorary President. It has a Governing Council, an Executive Committee and a Director General. It maintains links with many United Nations, governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Eco-investing or green investing, is a form of socially responsible investing where investments are made in companies that support or provide environmentally friendly products and practices. These companies encourage new technologies that support the transition from carbon dependence to more sustainable alternatives. Green finance is "any structured financial activity that has been created to ensure a better environmental outcome."

An energy transition is a significant structural change in an energy system regarding supply and consumption. Currently, a transition to sustainable energy is underway to limit climate change. It is also called renewable energy transition. The current transition is driven by a recognition that global greenhouse-gas emissions must be drastically reduced. This process involves phasing-down fossil fuels and re-developing whole systems to operate on low carbon energy sources. A previous energy transition took place during the industrial revolution and involved an energy transition from wood and other biomass to coal, followed by oil and most recently natural gas.

Geothermal energy in Lebanon is a branch of the energy industry, expanding quickly over the last several years. According to a UNDP assessment (CEDRO project), the geothermal energy theoretically available in Lebanon is 109 GWh or 70,000 the amount of energy needed in Lebanon per year although the technologies at the time of study allow for the extraction of only 10% of that amount, i.e. 108 GWh or 7,000 times the yearly energy demand of Lebanon. Additionally, the study concludes that for reasons regarding the safety of EGS technologies, only hydrothermal techniques could be appropriate for Lebanon. These techniques theoretically allow for the extraction of only 1.2. 105 GWh. The CEDRO project proposes "an optimistic but realistic scenario" for the implementation of this technology that would allow for the production of 0.2% of the total energy demand for 2025 via geothermal means. The study includes a geothermal atlas for the country and estimates the current overall potential of geothermal heat and power generation.

Denmark is a leading country in wind energy production and wind turbine production. Wind power alone produced 47% of Denmark's electricity consumption in 2017, and is expected to increase its production by nearly 80% in the years to 2024.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Power-to-X</span> Storing surplus electricity production in chemical form

Power-to-X is a number of electricity conversion, energy storage, and reconversion pathways that use surplus electric power, typically during periods where fluctuating renewable energy generation exceeds load. Power-to-X conversion technologies allow for the decoupling of power from the electricity sector for use in other sectors, possibly using power that has been provided by additional investments in generation. The term is widely used in Germany and may have originated there.

Diane Gilpin is the founder and CEO of the Smart Green Shipping Alliance that aims to make UK shipping more sustainable through using renewable energy for propulsion. She has previously worked in marketing and technology transfer in telecoms, banking and motor sport.
