HATNet Project

The Hungarian Automated Telescope Network (HATNet) project is a network of six small fully automated "HAT" telescopes. The scientific goal of the project is to detect and characterize extrasolar planets using the transit method. This network is used also to find and follow bright variable stars. The network is maintained by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

Contents

The HAT acronym stands for Hungarian-made Automated Telescope, because it was developed by a small group of Hungarians who met through the Hungarian Astronomical Association. The project started in 1999 and has been fully operational since May 2001. [1]

Equipment

The prototype instrument, HAT-1 was built from a 180 mm focal length and 65 mm aperture Nikon telephoto lens and a Kodak KAF-0401E chip of 512 × 768, 9 μm pixels. The test period was from 2000 to 2001 at the Konkoly Observatory in Budapest. [1]

HAT-1 was transported from Budapest to the Steward Observatory, Kitt Peak, Arizona, USA, in January 2001. The transportation caused serious damage to the equipment. [1]

Later built telescopes use Canon 11 cm diameter f/1.8L lenses for a wide-field of 8°×8°. It is a fully automated instrument with 2K x 2K Charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors. One HAT instrument operates at the Wise Observatory. [2] [3]

HAT is controlled by a single Linux PC without human supervision. Data are stored in a MySQL database.[ citation needed ]

HAT-South

From 2009, three other locations joined the HATNet with telescopes of completely new design. The telescopes are deployed to Australia, Namibia and Chile. Each system has eight (2*4) joint-mounted, quasi-parallel Takahashi Epsilon (180 mm diameter, f/2.8) astrographs with Apogee 4k*4k CCDs with overlapping fields of view. The processing computers are Xenomai-based industrial PCs with 10 TB of storage.

Participants in the project

HAT-1 was developed during the undergraduate (and also the first year graduate) studies of Gáspár Bakos (Eötvös Loránd University, now at Princeton University) and at Konkoly Observatory (Budapest), under the supervision of Dr. Géza Kovács. In the development József Lázár, István Papp and Pál Sári also played an important role.

More than 100 people have contributed altogether to the seventy planet discovery papers published or submitted by the project as of Feb 2020. Gáspár Bakos, István Papp, József Lázár, Pál Sári, have contributed to all of the planet discoveries by HAT. Planets discovered

One-hundred-thirty-four extrasolar planets have been discovered so far by the HAT surveys, including a handful of planets that were independently discovered by other groups as well (particularly the WASP survey). Sixty-three of these were found by the northern HATNet project, and seventy-one by the southern HATSouth project. All have been discovered using the transit method. In addition, a few additional planetary companions to the transiting planets were discovered through radial velocity follow-up observations, including HAT-P-13c, which was the first outer planetary or brown-dwarf companion confirmed with a well-characterised orbit for a system with a transiting planet [4]

Light green rows indicate that the planet orbits one of the stars in a binary star system.

HAT-P-4b is a confirmed extrasolar planet orbiting the star HAT-P-4 over 1000 light years away in Boötes constellation. It was discovered by transit on October 2, 2007, which looks for slight dimming of stars caused by planets that passed in front of them. It is the fourth planet discovered by the HATNet Project. It is also called BD+36 2593b, TYC 2569-01599-1b, 2MASS J15195792+3613467b, SAO 64638b.

WASP-11/HAT-P-10 is a binary star. It is a primary main-sequence orange dwarf star. Secondary is M-dwarf with a projected separation of 42 AU. The system is located about 424 light-years away in the constellation Aries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">HAT-P-14b</span> Exoplanet in the constellation of Hercules

HAT-P-14b, officially named Sissi also known as WASP-27b, is an extrasolar planet located approximately 224.2 ± 0.6 parsecs (731.2 ± 2.0 ly) away in the constellation of Hercules, orbiting the 10th magnitude F-type main-sequence star HAT-P-14. This planet was discovered in 2010 by the HATNet Project using the transit method. It was independently detected by the SuperWASP project.

HAT-P-33 is a late-F dwarf star. It is orbited by a planet called HAT-P-33b. A search for a binary companion star using adaptive optics at the MMT Observatory was negative.

HAT-P-27, also known as WASP-40, is the primary of a binary star system about 659 light-years away. It is a G-type main-sequence star. The star's age is similar to the Sun's at 4.4 billion years. HAT-P-27 is enriched in heavy elements, having a 195% concentration of iron compared to the Sun.

HAT-P-50b is an exoplanet orbiting HAT-P-50 star located in the Gemini constellation. It was discovered in 2015.

HAT-P-19 is a K-type main-sequence star about 658 light-years away. The star is old yet metal enriched, having amount of heavy elements 250% of solar abundance. The survey in 2012 have failed to find any stellar companions to HAT-P-19.

HAT-P-18 is a K-type main-sequence star about 530 light-years away. The star is very old and has a concentration of heavy elements similar to solar abundance. A survey in 2015 detected very strong starspot activity on HAT-P-18.

HAT-P-16 is a F-type main-sequence star about 725 light-years away. The star has a concentration of heavy elements slightly higher than solar abundance, and low starspot activity. The survey in 2015 have failed to find any stellar companions to it. The spectral analysis in 2014 have discovered the HAT-P-16 has a carbon to oxygen molar ratio of 0.58±0.08, close to Sun`s value of 0.55.

HAT-P-28 is the primary of a binary star system about 1320 light-years away. It is a G-type main-sequence star. The star's age is older than the Sun's at 6.1+2.6
−1.9
billion years. HAT-P-28 is slightly enriched in heavy elements, having a 130% concentration of iron compared to the Sun. Since 2014, the binary star system is suspected to be surrounded by a debris disk with a 6.1″(2500 AU) radius.

HATS-3 is an F-type main-sequence star 1,380 light-years away. Its surface temperature is 6351±76 K. HATS-3 is relatively depleted in its concentration of heavy elements, with a metallicity Fe/H index of −0.157±0.07, but is slightly younger than the Sun at an age of 3.2+0.6
−0.4
billion years.
