The Hasselblad Award (in full: Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography) is an award granted to "a photographer recognized for major achievements".

History

First awarded in 1980, the award—and the Hasselblad Foundation—was set up from the estate of Erna and Victor Hasselblad. Victor Hasselblad was the inventor of the Hasselblad Camera System.

The award includes a cash prize of SEK 2,000,000 (~€200,000), a gold medal, diploma, and an exhibition at the Hasselblad Center in the Göteborg Museum of Art in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation was established in 1985 for the purpose of providing funding to visual artists internationally to further their artistic practices. It was established at the bequest of Lee Krasner, who was an American abstract expressionist painter and the spouse of fellow painter Jackson Pollock. To date, the foundation has awarded more than 5,000 grants in 79 countries for a total of over $87 million.

Carrie Mae Weems is an American artist working in text, fabric, audio, digital images and installation video, and is best known for her photography. She achieved prominence through her early 1990s photographic project The Kitchen Table Series. Her photographs, films and videos focus on serious issues facing African Americans today, including racism, sexism, politics and personal identity.

The participation of women in photography goes back to the very origins of the process. Several of the earliest women photographers, most of whom were from Britain or France, were married to male pioneers or had close relationships with their families. It was above all in northern Europe that women first entered the business of photography, opening studios in Denmark, France, Germany, and Sweden from the 1840s, while it was in Britain that women from well-to-do families developed photography as an art in the late 1850s. Not until the 1890s, did the first studios run by women open in New York City.

Provoke, with its subtitle of Provocative Materials for Thought, was an experimental, small-press Japanese photography magazine founded in 1968 by critic/photographers Kōji Taki and Takuma Nakahira, photographer Yutaka Takanashi, and writer Takahiko Okada. Daidō Moriyama joined from the second issue. Provoke was "a platform for a new photographic expression", "to free photography from subservience to the language of words", "that stood in opposition to the photography establishment". It was a quarterly magazine that also included poetry, criticism and photographic theory. Provoke lasted for only three issues but has been described as having a "profound effect upon Japanese photography in the 1970s and 80s", and is said to have "spread a completely new idea of photography in Japan".

The Lucie Awards is an annual event honoring achievements in photography, founded in 2003 by Hossein Farmani.

Sandra S. "Sandy" Phillips is an American writer, and curator working in the field of photography. She is the Curator Emeritus of Photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She joined the museum as curator of photography in 1987 and was promoted to senior curator of photography in 1999 in acknowledgement of her considerable contributions to SFMOMA. A photographic historian and former curator at the Vassar College Art Gallery in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Phillips succeeded Van Deren Coke as head of one of the country’s most active departments of photography. Phillips stepped down from her full time position in 2016.

Jack Shainman Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in New York City. The gallery was founded by Jack Shainman and his then-partner Claude Simard (1956—2014) in 1984 in Washington, D.C. The gallery has a focus on artists from Africa, East Asia, and North America.

The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, honors those who have made great contributions to the field of photography.

Emi Anrakuji is a Tokyo-based legally blind Japanese photographer who makes self-portraits. She has produced a number of books with Nazraeli Press and her work is held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2006 Anrakuji won the New Photographer Prize of the Higashikawa Prize in Higashikawa, Japan.

Tarrah Krajnak is an American artist who works with photography, performance, and poetry. In 2020 she received the Lange-Taylor Prize. Krajnak's work is held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Pinault Collection, Paris and Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
