IRB Infrastructure Developers Limited (formerly IRB Infrastructure Developers Private Limited), is an Indian highway construction company [2] headed by Mr. Virendra Dattatraya Mhaiskar. It was incorporated in 1998, with its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. [3] It is part of the IRB Group and was ranked 200th in the Fortune India 500 list in 2020. [4] IRB Infrastructure, which executed the country's first build-operate-transfer (BOT) road project, is one of the largest operators of such ventures. [5] Currently it has about 3,404 lane Km operational and about 2,330 lane Km under development. [6] Among its notable projects are the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. [2] [7] In 2012, IRB acquired Tamil Nadu based BOT road builder MVR Infrastructure and Tollways for 130  crore. [8] [9] The company got the contract (3 out of 12 packages) of Ganga Expressway, the longest under-construction expressway in Uttar Pradesh. [10]

Projects

IRB Infrastructures executed India's first ever BOT (build-operate-transfer) project, the Thane-Bhivandi Bypass. Over the years, BOT became their strength, and turned into one of the largest BOT portfolios (operational projects and projects under construction) in the country with a total length of around 12,000-lane km. In its kitty, IRB has difficult projects like the four-laning of the Goa-Karnataka border from Karwar to Kundapur section of NH66, Agra-Etawah Bypass project, [11] Udaipur-Rajasthan NH8 project, [12] and Kaithal to Rajasthan NH152 project. [13] [14]

Mumbai-Pune Expressway

IRB Infrastructure acquired the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Pune National Highway, which was concluded under the supervision of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). [15] [16]

Chittorgarh And Gulabpura (six-laning project) (NH 79)

IRB achieved financial closure for its BOT project from Chittorgarh and Gulabpura. The project is an expansion of the 124.87-km section on NH79, converting from a four-lane to six-lane expressway. The concession period of this project is 20 years from the appointed date, including 910 days of construction, creating smoother transit. [17] The total funding for the project by company will be ₹690 crore and by SPV (Special Public Vehicle) tied banks will be ₹1,400 crore. [18]

Kaithal Rajasthan Project (NH 65)

IRB Infrastructure developed the Kaithal-Rajasthan project (NH65). The 166.26 km-long highway became operational in 2017, and has 20.90 km of service road, 18 pedestrian underpasses, 5 vehicular underpasses, 5 flyovers, 13 small bridges, 71 intersections, 241 culverts and railways over bridges. The cost of production for project was ₹2,290 crore, including a viability gap funding of ₹234 crore. [19]

Ahmedabad - Vadodara

In July 2011, IRB Infrastructure signed an agreement to develop a 102.3 km section in the Ahmedabad-Vadodara NH8 into six lanes from the existing two lanes. The project also included improvement of a 93.302 km section of the existing Ahmedabad – Vadodara Expressway (NE 1), on a Design Building Finance Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. [20] [21]

HAM projects

In March 2018, IRB Infrastructure won two hybrid annuity projects under NHDP phase IV in the state of Tamil Nadu, which included the four laning of NH-45A Puducherry to Poondiyankuppam and Poondiyankuppam to Sattanathapuram at a cost of ₹2,169 crore at a cost of ₹1,296 crore.[ clarification needed ] The construction period is 730 days and the operation period is 15 years for the said projects. [22] [23]

The company also received a letter of award on from the National Highways Authority of India for a hybrid annuity project worth ₹1,640 crore under the National Highways Development Project phase VI in Gujarat. The order came after the company had emerged as the preferred bidder for the construction of the eight-lane Vadodara Kim expressway from Padra to Vadodara section of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway in Gujarat. In 2009, IRB Infra won the bid to develop the greenfield Sindhudurg Airport in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra on a build-operate-transfer basis. [26] [27]

IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd. has been acknowledged for its overall excellence and proficiency in the form of various awards and accolades. Virendra D. Mhaiskar, chairman and managing director of IRB, was conferred with the “Young Turk of the Year” award at the 6th Edition of CNBC TV 18 India Business Leader Awards on 11 December 2010 at Mumbai. [28]

The company was given the CNBC TV 18 Essar Steel Infrastructure Excellence Award for the second time for its high quality work implemented on the Bharuch to Surat section of NH-8 under Highways and Bridges Category. The company also won the CNBC TV 18 Essar Steel Infrastructure Excellence Award in the Highways & Flyovers category for Mumbai-Pune section of NH-4 in 2009. [29] [30]

IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd. signed a contract worth ₹2,100 crore from NHAI for a six-lane project in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The project is to be developed on design, built, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) under the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) phase V. [31]

IRB Infrastructure Ltd won the Construction Times 2017 Award under the Best Executed Highway Project of the Year category for building the Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway Project. [32]

Controversy

In April 2018, Virendra Mhaiskar, the chairman and managing director of IRB Infrastructure, and all other officials got a clean chit from CBI [36] with regards to any sort of involvement in the murder of RTI activist Satish Shetty. They were summoned in May 2012 by the CBI, suspecting a connection with the case. During the investigation, CBI had asked Virendra Mhaiskar and other suspects to undergo a polygraph test. Mhaiskar along with the company officials had to undergo the polygraph test. [37]

The Golden Quadrilateral is a national highway network connecting several major industrial, agricultural and cultural centres of India. It forms a quadrilateral with all the four major metro cities of India forming the vertices, viz., Delhi (north), Kolkata (east), Mumbai (west) and Chennai (south). Other major cities connected by this network include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Balasore, Bhadrak, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Durgapur, Faridabad, Guntur, Gurugram, Jaipur, Kanpur, Pune, Kolhapur, Surat, Vijayawada, Eluru, Ajmer, Visakhapatnam, Bodhgaya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Mathura, Dhanbad, Gandhinagar, Udaipur, and Vadodara. These highway projects are implemented by the National Highway Authority Of India (NHAI). At 5,846 kilometres (3,633 mi), it is the largest highway project in India and the fifth longest in the world. It is the first phase of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP), and consists of two, four, and six-lane express highways, built at a cost of 600 billion (US$7.5 billion). The project was planned in 1999, launched in 2001, and was completed in 7 January 2012.

National Highway 8 is a 4-lane National Highway in India. According to estimates, it is the busiest highway in the subcontinent, as it connects the national capital Delhi to the financial capital Mumbai, as well as important cities Gurgaon, Jaipur, Ajmer, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Nadiad, Anand and Kheda. The total length is 1428km. Under the new numbering it has become part of the NH48.

National Highway 4 was a major National Highway before National Highway renumbering in Western and Southern India. NH 4 linked four of the 10 most populous Indian cities – Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Chennai. NH 4 was 1,235 km (767 mi) in length and passed through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka b'lore and Tamil Nadu. It is now numbered as National Highway 48 (India). National Highway 4 was known as P.B.Road in many parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka states before it was renumbered.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Highways Development Project</span> Project to upgrade major highways in India

The National Highways Development Project (NHDP) was a project of four laning of existing national highways and six laning of selected major national highways of India. The project was started in 1998 under the leadership of Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. National Highways account for only about 2% of the total length of roads, but carry about 40% of the total traffic across the length and breadth of the country. This project is managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways. The NHDP represents 49,260 km of roads and highways work and construction in order to boost economic development of the country. The government has planned to end the NHDP program in early 2018 and subsume the ongoing projects under a larger Bharatmala project.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Expressways of India</span> List of Expressways in India

Expressways are the highest class of roads in India. In July 2023, the total length of expressways in India was 5,579 km (3,467 mi), with 8,366 km (5,198 mi) under construction. These are controlled-access highways where entrance and exits are controlled by the use of cloverleaf or trumpet or grade separated interchanges that are incorporated into the design of the expressway and designed for maximum speed of 120 km/h, whereas National highways are flyover access or tolled, where entrance and exit is through the side of the flyover, at each intersection of highway with road, flyovers are provided to bypass the city/town/village traffic and these highways are designed for speed of 100 km/h. Some roads are not access-controlled expressways but are still named expressways, such as the Biju Expressway, these are actually state highways that are not declared by the central government as an Expressway, hence not an Expressway or National Highway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway</span> Road in India

The Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway or Mahatma Gandhi Expressway or National Expressway 1 is an expressway connecting the cities of Ahmedabad and Vadodara in the state of Gujarat, India. The 93.1 km (57.8 mi) long expressway reduces the travel time between the two cities from two and a half hours to an hour. It was declared as National Expressway 1 in 1986.

Satish Shetty, popularly known as "Satish", was an Indian social activist, noted for exposing many land scams in Maharashtra. He had used the Right to Information Act to expose irregularities in Government offices in the last five years. He was killed on 13 January 2010, by unknown attackers in Talegaon.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Delhi–Faridabad Skyway</span> Road in India

Delhi Faridabad Skyway is a 4.4 km long, 6-lane wide elevated highway that connects Delhi with Faridabad, a prominent city in National Capital Region. It was inaugurated on 29 November 2010. The project was undertaken by concessionaire "Badarpur Faridabad Tollway Limited", a subsidiary of Hindustan Construction Company Limited. The highway begins at Badarpur, Delhi near DDA Flats Badarpur and ends at Sector 37, Faridabad, Haryananear Sarai Metro station.

Sindhudurg Airport, also known as Chipi Airport, is a domestic airport serving the city of Sindhudurg, Maharastra, India. It is located at Chipi-Parule in Vengurla taluka, located 21 km (13 mi) from the nearest city of Malvan and 31 km (19 mi) from Sindhudurg. Construction was completed by the second half of 2018 and a test flight from Mumbai landed on 12 September 2018 on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The airport was formally inaugurated on 5 March 2019. Currently, Alliance Air is the only airline operating flights from Mumbai. Commercial flights started at the airport from 9 October 2021. Fly91 has started operation in February 2024 with a flight to and from Bengaluru.

The Diamond Quadrilateral is a project of the Indian Railways to establish a high-speed rail network in India. The Diamond Quadrilateral will connect the four mega cities of India, viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, similar to the Golden Quadrilateral highway system.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Delhi–Meerut Expressway</span> Controlled-access expressway in India

Delhi–Meerut Expressway or National Expressway 3 is India's widest 96 km long controlled-access expressway, connecting Delhi with Meerut via Dasna in Ghaziabad in India. The 8 lanes old stretch of National Highway 9 (NH-9) up to Dasna is widened to 14 lanes. The fourth phase of the expressway is built on a new alignment from Dasna to Meerut – a six-lane stretch joining Meerut bypass. The 28 km (17 mi) stretch between Nizamuddin Bridge and Dasna is one of the most congested areas in the NCR. The total project cost is estimated to be between ₹8,000–10,000 crores.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bharatmala</span> Indian highway and expressway construction project

The Bharatmala Pariyojna is an ongoing project that will interconnect 550 District Headquarters through a minimum 4-lane highway by raising the number of corridors to 50 and move 80% freight traffic to National Highways by interconnecting 24 logistics parks, 66 inter-corridors (IC) of total 8,000 km (5,000 mi), 116 feeder routes (FR) of total 7,500 km (4,700 mi) and 7 north east Multi-Modal waterway ports. The project also includes development of tunnels, bridges, elevated corridors, flyovers, overpass, interchanges, bypasses, ring roads etc. to provide shortest, jam free & optimized connectivity to multiple places, it is a centrally-sponsored and funded Road and Highways project of the Government of India. This ambitious umbrella programme will subsume all existing Highway Projects including the flagship National Highways Development Project (NHDP), launched by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998. Bharatmala is mainly focused on connecting remote areas and satellite cities of megacities such as Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad etc. The total investment for 83,677 km (51,994 mi) committed new highways is estimated at 10.63 lakh crore (US$130 billion), making it the single largest outlay for a government road construction scheme. The project will build highways from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and then cover the entire string of Himalayan territories - Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand - and then portions of borders of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alongside Terai, and move to West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and right up to the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur and Mizoram. Special emphasis will be given on providing connectivity to far-flung border and rural areas including the tribal and backward areas.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Highway 48 (India)</span> National highway in India

National Highway 48 is a major National Highway of India that starts at Delhi and terminates at Chennai traversing through seven states of India. It has a total length of 2807 km. NH 48 passes through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The stretch between Pune and Bengaluru was known as P.B. Road in olden days.

The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway is a 1,350 km long, 8-lane wide under-construction access-controlled expressway connecting India's national capital New Delhi to its financial capital Mumbai. The foundation stone for the project was laid by union minister Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley on 8 March 2019 and is inaugurated by PM Modi. The total project value including the land acquisition cost is around ₹1,00,000 crores . 

The Trans-Haryana Expressway or the Ambala–Narnaul Expressway (NH-152D) is a 227-km long, 6-lane wide greenfield access-controlled expressway, connecting the cities of Ambala and Narnaul in the state of Haryana. The expressway connects Gangheri village in Kurukshetra district with Surana village on Narnaul Bypass (NH-148B) in Mahendragarh district. It passes via Kaul, Pundri, Assandh, Dhatrath, Kalanaur, Charkhi Dadri and Kanina. It will reduce the distance from Chandigarh to Delhi, Narnaul, and Jaipur, thus decongesting NH-44 and NH-48.

Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is a 109 km (68 mi) long, four-lane wide access-controlled under-construction expressway in Gujarat, India. It will connect Sardar Patel Ring Road near Sarkhej in Ahmedabad with Adhelai village in Bhavnagar district via Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). The proposed Dholera International Airport near Navagam, about 20 km (12 mi) from Dholera SIR will also lie in the route.
