Issa Hanna Dabish (1919-2006), simply known as Issa Hanna, was an Iraqi artist and restorer of antiquities, noted for silkscreen works. Along with Akram Sukri, he was instrumental in founding Iraq's first modern art association in 1941.

Life and career

Issa Hanna Dabish was born in Telkaif, an Assyrian town in northern Iraq, in 1919. At around the age of five or six, the young Issa Hanna, emigrated to Baghdad with his family after locusts ravaged the family's crops. [1]

In an interview with the Multicultural Review, he described his early childhood in Telkaif and Baghdad: [2]

From the age of five or six years old, I did sculpture from mud while living in Telkaif, a village in northern Iraq. At six we moved to Baghdad and I started drawing. When my family gave me four floos (pennies) to spend in school, I would hide the money and then buy a box of watercolors. Sometimes my mother would catch me, and say, “Oh, he’s sketching again!” My parents wanted me to be an engineer or a doctor.

He received his early education at Rawdat Al-Chaldan and Al-Ma'muniya Primary School. He attended the Jaafari secondary school at the same time as he was teaching painting at the Eastern Middle School. His early art education was at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad where he graduated in 1950 and later studied abroad at Syracuse University New York graduating in 1956. [1]

He showed an early talent for drawing. At the age of 12, he was making portraits of well-known local figures in chalk, pen and ink. [3] Although his parents encouraged his painting as a hobby, he often felt the need to conceal his artistic endeavours for fear of being reprimanded. However, two of his teachers, artists, Nasser Awni and Qasim Naji, noticed his ability and encouraged him. Professor Nasser Awni found a special room for gifted artists and he was allocated a place there. In his final year, he completed a portrait of King Faisal, which was displayed in the Boy Scouts Square at the annual Boy Scouts Festival. [1]

He was on good terms with the Selim family, whose members were all notable artists in their own right, and he was a similar age to two of the sons, Su'ad Salim and Jawad Selim. During visits to the Salim home, he was able to observe their collection of paintings by Iraqi pioneer artists including; Abdul Qadir Al Rassam, Asim Hafidh and Mohammed Saleh Zaki, and was also given access to art books that were in print at the time. Through the Selims, he was introduced to prominent artists, Zaid Mohammed Saleh Zaki, Atta Sabri and Hafidh al-Droubi, who was teaching at the Art Institute. Al-Droubi, who was known for encouraging talented young artists, was very pleased with Issa Hanna's work. [1]

Al-Droubi and his contemporaries, adopted the young Issa Hanna into their group and expanded his art education by teaching him different types of drawing, and to use a variety of media such as oils, pastels and watercolours. Initially they encouraged him to paint Baghdad's streetscapes and alleyways, but later they also took him on trips outside Baghdad to paint landscapes. [1]

He enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, graduating in 1950 and later studied at Syracuse University in New York, graduating in 1956 where he majored in photography and commercial art. [4] He subsequently became the first Iraqi to teach silkscreen technique. [5]

After completing his education, he worked for the Water Board, but later joined the Department of Antiquities, where he met the artist, Akram Shukri, who was the Director of the Antiquities’ Laboratory. [1] Together with Akram Shukri, he was instrumental in forming the Society of Artists and Art Lovers, founded in 1941. [6]

He remained very active in Iraq's arts community throughout his life. He served on the inaugural board of the Society for Artists and Art Lovers, formed in 1941, as its treasurer. [7] He was a founding member of the Primitive Artists Group in 1950, and also a foundation member of Iraqi Plastic Artists’ Society, formed in 1956. [4] He was appointed the lifetime honorary chairman of the Iraqi Artists Association. [3] He was also the chairman of the International Chaldean Artists’ Association. [5]

In 1993, he emigrated to Canada to be with his son. In spite of his advanced age, he continued to paint, producing smaller works in pastels and aquarelle. He also taught painting to senior citizens and children out of a local gallery. [2] He died in 2009, aged 90 years. [8]

Work

Throughout his career, Issan Hanna focused on the practice of painting. He was not drawn to theories of contemporary art. [1] Nature is the dominant theme in his paintings. [9] [10]

He painted in the abstract style. [4]

Some 20 works were housed in the Iraqi Center for the Arts (formerly the Saddam Center for the Arts), prior to the lootings of 2003. [11] Twelve of these works have since been recovered are now on display at the Baghdad Museum of Modern Art. [12]

Abdul Qadir Al Rassam, عبد القادر الرسام), 1952 - 1882), was born in Baghdad, Iraq and is one of the first generation of Iraqi artists to study abroad and paint in the European style. He was influential in terms of introducing local audiences to European art. He is noted for his portraits and landscapes, painted in the Realist style.

Naziha Salim

Naziha Salim was an Iraqi artist, educator and author, described by the country's president, Jalal Talabani, as "the first Iraqi woman who anchored the pillars of Iraqi contemporary art".

Mahmoud Sabri was an Iraqi painter who was considered to be one of the pioneers of Iraqi modern art and one of the pillars of modernism in Iraqi art.

Dia Azzawi

Dia Al-Azzawi is an Iraqi painter and sculptor, now living and working in London and one of the pioneers of modern Arab art. He is noted for incorporating Arabic script into his paintings. Active in the arts community, he founded the Iraqi art group known as New Vision and has been an inspiration to a generation of young, calligraffiti artists.

Iraqi art

Iraqi art is one of the richest art heritages in world and refers to all works of visual art originating from the geographical region of what is present day Iraq since ancient Mesopotamian periods. For centuries, the capital, Baghdad was the Medieval centre of the literary and artistic Arab world during the Abbasid Caliphate, in which Baghdad was the capital, but its artistic traditions suffered at the hands of the Mongol invaders in the 13th century. During other periods it has flourished, such as during the reign of Pir Budaq, or under Ottoman rule in the 16th century when Baghdad was known for its Ottoman miniature painting. In the 20th century, an art revival, which combined both tradition and modern techniques, produced many notable poets, painters and sculptors who contributed to the inventory of public artworks, especially in Baghdad. These artists are highly regarded in the Middle East, and some have earned international recognition. The Iraqi modern art movement had a profound influence on pan-Arab art generally.

Hafidh Al Droubi (1914-1991) was an Iraqi painter and draughtsman, noted for his Cubist paintings and for his approach to professionalising Iraqi art education in the early to mid 20th-century. He was a prolific painter, an important artist in the Pioneer generation, a key figure in the development of modernism in Iraq and a key figure in the development of early Iraqi art education.

Rafa al-Nasiri was an Iraqi painter, draughtsman, print-maker, educator and author whose works with a social and political message resonated with the Iraqi public in the mid-20th century. He was also very influential in encouraging young artists to take up print-making.

Lorna Selim

Lorna Selim (1928-2021) was an English artist and art teacher, who married prominent Iraqi sculptor Jewad Selim, relocating to Baghdad with him in 1950. She was a practising artist for much of her life up until her death. Selim contributed to the arts community in Iraq through her exhibitions, teaching and active participation in arts groups for twenty years. After her husband's premature death in 1961, she was part of the team responsible for completing his iconic monumental work, entitled Nasb al-Hurriyah.

Amer al-Obaidi is an Iraqi-born painter, now residing in the United States, who is noted for artwork that emphasises Iraqi folklore and tradition.

Mohammed Hajji Selim (1883-1941) was among the first generation of modern Iraqi artists to receive a European arts education. He was a talented amateur artist who produced still lifes, landscapes and portraits, most of which have not survived. He is mainly remembered as the patriarch of an artistic dynasty and as the father of the distinguished sculptor, Jawad Saleem.

Niazi Mawlawi Baghdadi was a nineteenth century Iraqi painter, decorator and calligrapher, regarded as the first Iraqi artist to combine traditional practices within a modern style of art.

Kadhim Haydar (1932–1985) was a highly respected Iraqi artist, poet, author, stage-set designer and educator who, as part of the first generation of modern Iraqi artists, had a major influence on the direction of modern Iraqi art. His artworks are noted for their use of symbolism, myth and poetic allegory within a contemporary framework.

Saleh al-Jumai'e is an Iraqi artist noted for his works that explore the notion of tracks left by ancient heritage. His works often integrate Arabic calligraphy in an abstract artwork.

Fathi Safwat Kirdar (1896–1966) was an Iraqi painter and sculptor. Born in Kirkuk into a well-known Turkmen family of Kirdar/Qirdar. In 1905, his father moved to Baghdad, where he studied at the Rushdiya military school and taught at its schools. He served in the Ottoman army during World War I, and was captured once in Palestine. He completed his post-graduate studies at the Teachers' House in Istanbul and was appointed as a teacher for painting in Iraq from 1927 to 1961. Among his students were Faeq Hassan, Atta Sabri, Hafiz Al-Droubi and Jawad Saleem.
He died in Istanbul.

Muhammad Bahjat Athari was an Iraqi linguist, historian and investigator, student of Mahmoud Shukri Al-Alusi.

Akram Shukri
(1910-1983) was an Iraqi artist and architect. He was the first Iraqi artist to receive an art scholarship to study in England and was also the first Iraqi artist to paint using the Pointillism style. He was instrumental in founding the Society of Artists and Art Lovers in 1941, an art group that shaped Iraq's attitudes to the arts and the role of the arts in the construction of a national identity for the newly created Iraqi state. He worked for the Iraqi Department of Antiquities and Heritage, and in his later career, became the Director of the Iraqi Antiquities Laboratory. Sayid Akram Sukri

Asim Hafidh (Arabic: عاصم حافظ, was an Iraqi artist, educator and author. He was amongst the first Iraqi artists to study painting in the European style and was part of a group known as the Ottoman artists who were credited with bringing easel painting to Iraq. He is noted for publishing the first Iraqi book on fine art, entitled Rules for Drawing from Nature.

Salim Mohammed Saleh Zaki (1888-1974), also known as Abdul Karim, was an Iraqi artist and one of the first generation of Iraqi painters to be trained in Western painting methods. Part of a group of artists, known as the Ottomans, he and his contemporaries were credited with bringing a European aesthetic to Iraqi art and encouraging a generation of local contemporary artists.

  8. In the literature, there is some confusion about his date of death. A Facebook page set up in his memory claims that he died in 2006. This is not consistent with secondary sources, which give his date of death as either 2008 or 2009 and almost always claim that he had attained 90 years. The later date seems more credible, since he gave an interview to the Multicultural Review in June–July, 2006.
