Jake Retzlaff is an American football quarterback for the BYU Cougars. He previously played for the Golden West Rustlers and the Riverside Tigers. He is Jewish. [1]
Retzlaff attended Centennial High School in Corona, California. As a junior, he totaled 1,067 passing yards and eight touchdowns, before not being allowed to play in his senior year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] [3] At the conclusion of his high school career, Retzlaff committed to play college football at Golden West College.
As a true freshman in 2021, Retzlaff threw for 3,302 yards and 23 touchdowns before deciding to transfer to Riverside City College. [4] [5] The following season with Riverside, he started 13 games, recording 4,596 yards passing, and 44 touchdowns, in addition to setting the school record for most passing yards in a game (529) and passing touchdowns in a single game (6). [6] [7] He entered the transfer portal for the second time at the season's end.
As the number one rated junior college quarterback in the nation, Retzlaff announced in January 2023, that he would be transferring to BYU. [8] [9] Entering the 2023 season, he was named the second-string quarterback behind Pittsburgh transfer Kedon Slovis. [10] After an injury to Slovis, Retzlaff was named the starting quarterback against West Virginia. [11] [12] In his first career start, he threw for 210 yards in a 37–7 loss. [13] The following week, he was once again named the starting quarterback. [14] [15] In his second career start against Iowa State, he threw his first career touchdown pass at the FBS level in a 45–13 defeat. [16] Retzlaff finished the season throwing for 648 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 116 yards and three touchdowns. [17]

In 2023, Retzlaff became the first ever Jewish quarterback to play at BYU. [18] [19]
Ty Hubert Detmer is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL). He won the Heisman Trophy in 1990 while playing college football for the BYU Cougars. Detmer broke numerous NCAA records with BYU, and was twice recognized as a consensus All-American. A late-round pick in the 1992 NFL Draft, Detmer played for six NFL teams over 14 seasons, mostly in a backup role. He is currently the head Athletic Director American Leadership–Gilbert North Eagles.
Robbie Bosco is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He played college football for the BYU Cougars and led the team to the 1984 National Championship.
John Dalton Beck is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for six seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the BYU Cougars, and was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was also a member of the NFL's Baltimore Ravens, Washington Redskins, and Houston Texans, as well as the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The Holy War is the name given to the American college football rivalry game played annually by the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and the University of Utah Utes. It is part of the larger BYU–Utah sports rivalry. In this context, the term "Holy War" refers to the fact that BYU is owned and administered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the U of U is a secular, public university with a substantial LDS student population. The current president and head football coach at the U of U are also LDS Church members.
Max Hall is a former American football quarterback, who played in both the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). After playing college football for BYU, he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Hall played in a total of six NFL games for the Cardinals. Hall spent 2012 as an assistant coach for BYU. He then played the 2013 CFL season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Casey Austin Keenum is an American football quarterback for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Houston Cougars, where he became the NCAA's all-time leader in total passing yards, touchdowns, and completions. In the 2008 college football season, Keenum ranked first nationally in total offense and second in total passing yards.
Jake Heaps is a former American professional football quarterback who is the personal quarterback coach for Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos. He was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Heaps played for three universities during his collegiate career including Miami (FL), Kansas and Brigham Young. Heaps worked as a radio host on 710 ESPN Seattle in addition to working for the Russell Wilson Passing Academy.
Taysom Shawn Hill is an American football utility player officially designated as a quarterback for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at BYU and joined the Saints in 2017 as an undrafted free agent. Hill was listed as a quarterback on the Saints depth chart during his first five seasons, though he took snaps at seven different positions. Hill was designated as a tight end beginning in 2022 before once again being listed as a quarterback in 2023. He has maintained similar roles on offense and special teams throughout his career, including as the Saints primary gunner. Hill's array of utilization has earned him a reputation as a unique player in the NFL. Due to his versatility, he is known as "The Human Swiss Army Knife" by Saints' media.

Kedon Slovis is an American football quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). Slovis attended and played high school football at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. For college, he played his first three years at USC, his fourth at Pittsburgh, and his fifth at BYU as a graduate transfer.
Zachary Kapono Wilson is an American football quarterback for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Brigham Young Cougars and was selected second overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft. Wilson served as the Jets' starter during his first three seasons, but inconsistent play and injuries led to him being traded to the Broncos in 2024.

Caleb Sequan Williams is an American football quarterback for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners and USC Trojans and was selected first overall by the Bears in the 2024 NFL draft. Williams won the Heisman Trophy and several other awards with USC in 2022 after throwing for over 4,500 yards with 52 total touchdowns, the latter being a single-season school record.

The 2023 BYU Cougars football team represented Brigham Young University (BYU) as a member of the Big 12 Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cougars were led by eighth-year head coach Kalani Sitake and played their home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The season was the first year that BYU competed in the Big 12.
