Joanna Shields,Baroness Shields, OBE (born 12 July 1962) is a British-American businesswoman and politician. Shields was made a Life Peer in the House of Lords in 2014,and later was Minister for Internet Safety and Security under David Cameron and Theresa May. She had also been Advisor on the Digital Economy to David Cameron.
Shields was born in 1962 in St. Marys,Pennsylvania,and was the second of five children. [1]
Shields moved to Silicon Valley in 1989,and joined Electronics for Imaging as an early employee. In 1997 Shields became CEO of Veon,an interactive video technology company whose intellectual property included patents for adding interactive links to video streams that became part of the MPEG4 streaming video standard. Philips acquired Veon in 2000. After closing the Veon transaction,Shields was hired by the company that invented streaming audio and video,RealNetworks,to run its businesses outside the United States. [2]
Shields briefly joined former Efi CEO and colleague,Dan Avida,to build the business of a storage encryption company he founded called Decru,where she played an instrumental role in forming a partnership with Network Appliance,the company that eventually acquired Decru for $272m. [3]
Shields then became a managing director for Google Europe,Middle East and Africa.[ citation needed ]
In late 2006 Shields was approached by Benchmark Capital to step in as CEO of the social networking startup Bebo. [4] At Bebo,Shields introduced Open Media,opening Bebo's platform for media companies to reach its 50M user base and enabling media owners to monetise their content, [5] and Bebo Originals,a series of original online shows. [6] The first Bebo Original KateModern was viewed 85M times,was nominated for two BAFTA awards [7] and won the Broadcasting Press Guild Innovation Award for Outstanding Development in Broadcasting. [8]
After engineering Bebo's acquisition for $850m by Aol in May 2008,Shields briefly relocated to New York City to head Aol's newly created People Networks,overseeing the company's social and communications assets including AIM,Aol Instant Messenger and ICQ. Bebo's development continued under Shields with the release of Timeline in 2009,the first social network to organise and represent life events in a linear way. [9] Timeline eventually became standard on social networks when Facebook released the feature in 2012. [10]
In 2009 Shields was recruited by former Google colleague Sheryl Sandberg to run Facebook in Europe,Middle East &Africa as VP &managing director. [11]
In May 2018,Shields was announced as the Group CEO of BenevolentAI,a London-based medical startup. [12] [13] She stepped down from that role in September 2023. [14]
Shields was ranked No. 1 on the Wired 100 in 2011 [15] and No. 6 in the MediaGuardian 100 in 2012. [16] In February 2013 she was named to the list of the 100 most powerful women in the United Kingdom by BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. [17] In July 2013 Computer Weekly named Shields the Most Influential Woman in UK IT. [18] In July 2013 she received the British Interactive Media Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. [19]
In October 2012 Shields was named the UK's Ambassador for Digital Industries. [20] She was Chair and CEO of Tech City from January 2013 to May 2015. [21] She helped create Future Fifty,a programme whicxh was launched by the Chancellor George Osborne in April 2013. [22]
Shields was appointed OBE in the 2014 New Year Honours List for "services to digital industries and voluntary service to young people". [23] After being nominated as a working peeress in August 2014, [24] Shields was elevated to the peerage on 16 September 2014 taking the title Baroness Shields,of Maida Vale in the City of Westminster. She graduated as BS from Penn State University,where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority, [26] and did her post-grad studies as MBA from George Washington University. Shields received a Doctorate in Public Service,Honoris Causa,from George Washington University May 2016.[ citation needed ]. Shields is married to Andy Stevenson,from the Racing Point Force India Formula One team. [27]

Anelay was appointed as Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union in the Second May ministry,after the 2017 reshuffle.

Launched on August 1,2003,it was the first social network to reach a global audience and had a significant influence on technology,pop culture and music. It also played a critical role in the early growth of companies like YouTube and created a developer platform that launched the successes of Zynga,RockYou and Photobucket,among others. From 2005 to 2009,Myspace was the largest social networking site in the world.
Ursula M. Burns is an American businesswoman. Burns is known for her tenure as the CEO of Xerox,from 2009 to 2016,the first black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company. She is also the first woman to follow another as the head of a Fortune 500 company. Burns remained the chairman at Xerox from 2010 to 2017.
Jean Case is an American businesswoman,author,and philanthropist who is chair of the board of National Geographic,CEO of Case Impact Network,and CEO of the Case Foundation. She is married to AOL co-founder Steve Case.
Facebook is a social media and social networking service owned by the American technology conglomerate Meta. Created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with four other Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin,Andrew McCollum,Dustin Moskovitz,and Chris Hughes,its name derives from the face book directories often given to American university students. Membership was initially limited to Harvard students,gradually expanding to other North American universities. Since 2006,Facebook allows everyone to register from 13 years old,except in the case of a handful of nations,where the age limit is 14 years. As of December 2022,Facebook claimed almost 3 billion monthly active users. As of October 2023,Facebook ranked as the 3rd most visited website in the world,with 22.56% of its traffic coming from the United States. It was the most downloaded mobile app of the 2010s.
Randel A. Falco is an American media executive. Falco was president and CEO of Univision Communications Inc. from June 2011 until retiring in June 2018. Before joining Univision in January 2011 as executive vice president and COO,he served as chairman of the board and CEO of AOL from November 2006 to March 2009. Prior to his tenure at AOL,he spent 31 years at NBC,including serving as the network's president and COO.
Michael Birch OBE is a British computer programmer and entrepreneur. Birch has helped co-found several startups including Blab,BirthdayAlarm.com,Ringo.com,and social networking site Bebo. Birch sold Bebo,his most lucrative business,which he started with his wife,Xochi Birch,to AOL in March 2008 for $850 million. Later he purchased the company back for $1 million. Birch has made several large donations to charitable organizations,including charity:water.
Bebo was an American social networking website that originally operated from 2005 until its bankruptcy in 2013 and relaunched in February 2021. The site relaunched several times after its bankruptcy with a number of short-lived offerings,including instant messaging and video streaming,until its acquisition by Amazon in July 2019 when it was shut down. It was announced in January 2021 that it would be returning as a new social media site the month after. By May 2022,it had once again been shut down,without having ever left beta testing.
Timothy M. Armstrong is an American business executive. He was formerly the CEO of Oath Inc.,then a subsidiary of Verizon Communications that served as the umbrella company of its digital content subdivisions,including AOL and Yahoo!. Previously,he was the CEO of AOL Inc. from 2009 until its purchase by Verizon in 2015.

Instagram is a photo and video sharing social networking service owned by Meta Platforms. It allows users to upload media that can be edited with filters,be organized by hashtags,and be associated with a location via geographical tagging. Posts can be shared publicly or with preapproved followers. Users can browse other users' content by tags and locations,view trending content,like photos,and follow other users to add their content to a personal feed. A Meta-operated image-centric social media platform,it is available on iOS,Android,Windows 10,and the web. Users can take photos and edit them using built-in filters and other tools,then share them on other social media platforms like Facebook. It supports 32 languages including English,Spanish,French,Korean,and Japanese.
VEON Ltd. is a Dutch-domiciled multinational telecommunication services company. It predominantly operates services in the regions of Asia,Africa and Europe. It is the 13th largest mobile network operator in the world by number of subscribers. The company operates in six markets including Bangladesh,Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan,Pakistan,Ukraine and Uzbekistan,VEON announced the sale of its Russian operations on 24 November 2022. VEON's brands include Kyivstar,Jazz Pakistan,Banglalink and others.
Snapchat is an American multimedia instant messaging app and service developed by Snap Inc.,originally Snapchat Inc. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients. The app has evolved from originally focusing on person-to-person photo sharing to presently featuring users' "Stories" of 24 hours of chronological content,along with "Discover",letting brands show ad-supported short-form content. It also allows users to store photos in a password-protected area called "my eyes only". It has also reportedly incorporated limited use of end-to-end encryption,with plans to broaden its use in the future.
Xochi Birch OBE is an American computer programmer and entrepreneur in San Francisco,California. She is the co-founder of several companies since 1999,most notably the online social networking website Bebo,with her husband Michael Birch. She and Michael also founded several domains,with support from Paul Birch and Morgan Sowden.
Socialthing was a social news aggregator that founded in 2007 and was acquired by AOL the following year for an undisclosed sum. Later renamed AOL Lifestream,the service was a central part of AOL's unsuccessful attempt to compete against upstart social networks such as Facebook.
Nicola Sharon Mendelsohn,Baroness Mendelsohn,,is a British advertising executive. Active in the advertising industry since 1992,Mendelsohn serves as the head of global advertising relationships for Facebook,and also sits on the board of Diageo. The Daily Telegraph has called her "the most powerful woman in the British tech industry".
