Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta,Georgia. It was founded in 1836 as Emory College by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named in honor of Methodist bishop John Emory. Its main campus is in Druid Hills,3 miles (4.8 km) from Downtown Atlanta.

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is a consortium of eight private independent American theological schools and eleven centers and affiliates. Seven of the theological schools are located in Berkeley,California. The GTU was founded in 1962 and their students can take courses at the University of California,Berkeley. Additionally,some of the GTU consortial schools are part of other California universities such as Santa Clara University and California Lutheran University. Most of the GTU consortial schools are located in the Berkeley area with the majority north of the campus in a neighborhood known as "Holy Hill" due to the cluster of GTU seminaries and centers located there.

Joseph Echols Lowery was an American minister in the United Methodist Church and leader in the civil rights movement. He founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr. and others,serving as its vice president,later chairman of the board,and its third president from 1977 to 1997. Lowery participated in most of the major activities of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s,and continued his civil rights work into the 21st century. He was called the "Dean of the Civil Rights Movement."

Vincent Gordon Harding was an African-American pastor,historian,and scholar of various topics with a focus on American religion and society. A social activist,he was perhaps best known for his work with and writings about Martin Luther King Jr.,whom Harding knew personally. Besides having authored numerous books such as There Is A River,Hope and History,and Martin Luther King:The Inconvenient Hero,he served as co-chairperson of the social unity group Veterans of Hope Project and as Professor of Religion and Social Transformation at Iliff School of Theology in Denver,Colorado. When Harding died on May 19,2014,his daughter,Rachel Elizabeth Harding,publicly eulogized him on the Veterans of Hope Project website.
Robert Michael Franklin Jr. is an American author,theologian,ordained minister,and academic administrator who served as the tenth president of Morehouse College from 2007 to 2012. Franklin is a visiting scholar in residence at Stanford University's Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute. In January 2014,he became director of the religion program at the Chautauqua Institution.
Cordy Tindell Vivian was an American minister,author,and close friend and lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement. Vivian resided in Atlanta,Georgia,and founded the C. T. Vivian Leadership Institute,Inc. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
James Harvey DeVotie (1814–1891) was a Baptist minister in the American South. Born in Oneida County,New York,he was a pastor in South Carolina,Alabama and Georgia. He was a co-founder of Howard College in Marion,Alabama,later known as Samford University near Birmingham. He was a long-time trustee of Mercer University in Macon,Georgia. He served as a Confederate chaplain during the Civil War. After the war,he worked for the Southern Baptist Convention.

William E. Holmes was a Baptist minister and educator and president of Central City College in Macon,Georgia,for 25 years. Before his term at Central City,he was a professor at the Atlanta Baptist Institute. He was also secretary of the board at Spelman College.
Emilie Maureen Townes is an American Christian social ethicist and theologian. She was Dean,E. Rhodes,and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Womanist Ethics and Society at the Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Townes was the first African-American woman to be elected president of the American Academy of Religion in 2008. She also served as the president of the Society for the Study of Black Religion from 2012–2016.
Georgia Baptist College was a private grade school and college in Macon,Georgia,United States. It was founded in 1899 as Central City College and was renamed in 1938. It closed due to financial difficulties in 1956.
