He served in the Georgia General Assembly, U.S. House of Representatives, and he U.S. Senate before becoming the 32nd Governor of Georgia for two terms and then returning to the U.S. Senate. A believer in expansionist Manifest Destiny policies and a supporter of native Indian removal, Troup was born to planters and supported slavery throughout his career. Later in his life, he was known as "the Hercules of states' rights."

The Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC), a state agency of both Alabama and Georgia, promotes heritage tourism, history education, and historic preservation in an eighteen county area in Alabama and Georgia marketed as the "Chattahoochee Trace." Originally organized in 1970, in 1978 the Georgia General Assembly and the Alabama Legislature passed identical legislation to establish an interstate compact for the operation of the Commission. The Burnt Village (9TP9) was an historic Native American archaeological site located under West Point Reservoir in Troup County, Georgia. The settlement, also known by the Creek name Okfuskenena, was a trading crossroads for natives west of the Chattahoochee River, and reportedly a center for raiding parties against American expansionist efforts in the late 18th century. The village was attacked on September 27, 1793, by a party of white men attempting to rout the Creek population from the state. Several Indians were killed, and the village was burnt to the ground, leading to its characteristic name.

Brick Store is a historic building in Covington, Georgia. It was built in 1821 and served as a focus point for the community, also known as Sun Up, Georgia, Mt. Pleasent, Georgia or Brick Store, Georgia. It has been a general store, stage coach stop, post office, school house, courtroom, jail and residence for Martin Kolb. The first session of Newton County Superior Court was held at the Brick Store. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 9, 2009. The building is owned by the Trustees of the Newton County Historical Society. It is located on U.S. Route 278 at Old Social Circle Road.
The R. M. Jones General Store, also known as the Crossroads Store, is a historic general store in Jones Crossroads, Troup County, Georgia. The rock building was constructed by Monroe Jones in 1903. It has been owned and operated by members of the Avery family since the 1920s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 2009. It is located at 6926 Whitesville Road. The store's history is noted on a historical marker for Jones Crossroads.
The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation was a plantation on the Altamaha River, in Glynn County, Georgia. It produced rice from 1800 until 1915, when growing rice became unprofitable. Then it was primarily a dairy farm until 1942.
