KBRG (100.3 FM Amor 100.3) is a commercial radio station licensed to San Jose, California, with a Spanish AC radio format. The station is owned by TelevisaUnivision. Its studios are located at 1940 Zanker Road in San Jose,^[1]^[2] and the transmitter is on Loma Prieta Peak on the Santa Clara/Santa Cruz County line.

History

KEEN-FM and KBAY

KEEN-FM came to air March 4, 1963, after rushing to meet FCC deadlines and fix issues with its problematic transmitter.^[3] It was owned by United Broadcasting as the FM counterpart to KEEN AM 1370, but it offered easy listening music instead of KEEN's characteristic country format.^[4]

In 1967, KEEN-FM became KBAY, an easy listening station that remained as such for decades. In the early 1980s, it moved toward a soft adult contemporary sound.

KBRG comes to 100.3

In 1997, the Snell family, owners of United Broadcasting, sold their holdings. The buyer for KBAY was American Radio Systems. American Radio Systems immediately swapped with EXCL Communications, a subsidiary of Latin Communications Group. EXCL traded the Fremont-based KBRG facility at 104.9, an FM station in Portland, $2 million in cash and 150,000 shares of Latin Communications Group stock for the KBAY facility and Sacramento's KSSJ.^[5] ARS kept the KBAY call letters and format, which became part of a three-way station swap on December 31, 1997. KBAY moved from 100.3 to Gilroy 94.5, the former KUFX, while KUFX briefly moved to 104.9 before changing again in 1998.

KBRG history

KBRG began as an English-language station, debuting in 1964 on 105.3 (now KITS) carrying a stereo classics format under the name "K-Bridge."

KBRG was the Bay Area's first Spanish-language FM station as Caballero Spanish Radio. In December 1983, it moved to 104.9 (now KXSC) before being part of the ARS/EXCL swap on December 31, 1997.

From 1968 through 1971, KBRG broadcast Oakland Athletics games, with Víctor Manuel Torres at the mike.

In 1989, EXCL Communications purchased KBRG (previously on 104.9) from Radio America, Inc. EXCL brought the Radio Romántica Spanish AC format to 100.3 after moving from 104.9. During the 1990s, EXCL adapted the Radio Romántica format to several western Hispanic radio markets. After EXCL was acquired by Entravision in 2000, Entravision began to phase out the format. KBRG was the last station using the Radio Romántica format after Univision purchased KBRG from Entravision on January 1, 2006 and switched it to Spanish Adult Hits under the name Recuerdo 100.3.

On February 6, 2018, Univision dropped the "Más Variedad" Spanish Adult Hits format and switched it to Spanish AC as Amor 100.3. Although the music and radio shows are syndicated and heard from KOMR in Phoenix and KRDA in Fresno simultaneously, which also carries the Amor format. The “Amor” stations are similar to KLVE in Los Angeles which is one of the most listened Spanish language radio stations in the United States.

In March 2019, Univision placed all their stations into their new Uforia Audio Network, The station joined Uforia on March 15.

The signal can be received throughout the Bay Area with relative ease. There is also a booster station in Martinez, California called KOIT-3 that improves the coverage in the Diablo Valley area.

KOMR is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Sun City, Arizona, and serving the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is owned by Univision and it airs a Spanish Adult Contemporary radio format, calling itself "Amor 106.3". The studios are on South 30th Street in Phoenix.

WPPN is a radio station licensed to Des Plaines, Illinois that targets the Chicago metropolitan area. WPPN broadcasts a Spanish AC format. WPPN is owned by TelevisaUnivision through its Uforia Audio Network subsidiary. The station's studios are located at 625 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, and its transmitter is located in Arlington Heights.

KLOK is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting a radio format of Punjabi language talk and Punjabi music. Licensed to San Jose, California, the station serves the San Francisco Bay Area. Since June 2009, KLOK 1170 AM has served the South Asian community.

KXSC is a radio station based in Sunnyvale, California, serving the San Francisco Bay Area. It is owned by the University of Southern California and airs a classical music format as a full-time simulcast of KDFC in San Francisco. The station broadcasts in HD.

KVVF is a commercial radio station licensed to Santa Clara, California, and is simulcast on 100.7 KVVZ San Rafael. They are owned by Univision Communications, with studios at 1940 Zanker Road in San Jose. They serve the San Francisco Bay Area with a Spanish CHR radio format, using the slogan "Reggaeton y más." KVVF and KVVZ are the San Jose affiliates for the Uforia Audio Network.

KJMN is a radio station broadcasting a Spanish adult hits format licensed to Castle Rock, Colorado, United States, serving the Denver-Boulder area. The station is currently owned by Entravision Holdings, LLC. Its studios are located in Denver near Sports Authority Field at Mile High, and the transmitter is west of Castle Rock.

WAMR-FM is a commercial radio station in Miami, Florida. It airs a Spanish AC and tropical radio format aimed at Spanish-speaking adults. The station is owned by Univision Radio with the license held by Univision Radio Illinois, Inc. The station also broadcasts on HD radio.

KUFX is a classic rock radio station licensed to San Jose, California. Its studios are located along Junipero Serra Boulevard in Daly City, and the transmitter is located on Blackberry Hill above Los Gatos.

Uforia Audio Network is the radio broadcasting and music events division of TelevisaUnivision USA. Formerly known as Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation and Univision Radio, it is the eighth-largest radio broadcaster in the United States, and the largest specifically catering to Hispanic and Latino Americans. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles.

KRZY-FM is a Spanish-language Grupero and Cumbia music formatted radio station programmed by satellite, serving the Albuquerque, New Mexico, area. It is branded as "La Suavecita 105.9". It is owned by Entravision which also owns local television stations KLUZ, a Univision affiliate, and KTFQ, an Unimás affiliate. It is licensed to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Radio Romántica was a name used by EXCL Communications for various Spanish-language radio stations from the 1990s through 2005. The earliest known reference to Radio Romántica is from 1997, at the time when EXCL moved KBRG 104.9 to 100.3 San Jose during a frequency swap deal from American Radio Systems. Later EXCL's Radio Romántica Spanish AC format was adapted to KJMN Denver, KRZY-FM Albuquerque, an unknown Salinas station, and another unknown station using the name.

EXCL Communications was a Spanish-language broadcasting company founded in 1989 by Athena and Christopher Marks. It acquired its first radio stations, San Jose, California's KBRG and KLOK from brothers Danny Villanueva and James Villanueva in 1989. After its purchase of Embarcadero Media in 1997, it owned and operated 18 radio stations, making it the third largest Spanish radio group in the United States. EXCL was a division of Latin Communications Group from March 1996 until April 20, 2000, when Latin Communications Group was purchased by Entravision.

KHHM is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Shingle Springs, California, and serving the Sacramento metropolitan area. It is owned by Entravision Communications and airs a Bilingual Rhythmic CHR radio format branded as "Fuego 101.9". KHHM, along with sister stations KNTY, KRCX-FM, and KXSE have their radio studios and offices on Auburn Blvd in Sacramento.

KRZY is a radio station licensed to Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States, serving the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The station is owned by Entravision Communications. KRZY broadcasts a Spanish-language Sports format.
