The Khukri-class corvette is a class of corvettes intended to replace the ageing Petya II-class corvettes of the Indian Navy.[ citation needed ]

The first two were ordered in December 1983 and the remaining in 1985. Around 65% of the ship contains indigenous content. [1] The diesel engines were assembled in India, under license by Kirloskar Group.

Four ships of the class were built. As of July 2023, two ships remain in service in the Indian Navy, and a third one has been donated to the Vietnam People's Navy.

Service history

Khukri the lead ship of the class was decommissioned after 32 years of service on 23 December 2021. [2] She has since been preserved as a museum ship in Diu, India.

During a meeting between the defence minister's of India and Vietnam, India decided to gift the Kirpan to the Vietnam People's Navy. [3]

Kirpan was transferred to Vietnam People's Navy and was decommissioned from Indian Navy service on 22 July 2023. [4]

This was the first warship sunk in action by a submarine since World War II. It remains the post-Independence Indian navy's only warship to be lost in war.

Petya-class frigate

The Petya class was the NATO reporting name for a class of light frigates designed in the 1950s and built for the Soviet Navy in the 1960s. The Soviet designation was "Storozhevoi Korabl`" Project 159.

<i>Kora</i>-class corvette

Kora-class corvettes are guided missile corvettes, in active service with the Indian Navy and the National Coast Guard of Mauritius. Four vessels were built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and outfitted at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL).

INS Kirpan is the name of a Khukri-class corvette formerly commissioned by the Indian Navy. It was recently decommissioned and handed over to Vietnam People's Navy in a ceremony presided over by Adm. R. Hari Kumar and Rear Adm. Pham Manh Hung, Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Chief of Staff, Vietnam People's Navy.

Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft

The Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) corvettes, are a class of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) vessels currently being built for the Indian Navy, by Cochin Shipyard (CSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). They were conceived as a replacement to the ageing Abhay-class corvettes of the Indian Navy, and are designed to undertake ASW duties – including subsurface surveillance in littoral waters, search-and-attack unit (SAU) missions and coordinated anti-submarine warfare operations with naval aircraft. They were also designed to provide secondary duties – including defense against intruding aircraft, minelaying and search-and-rescue (SAR).

Admiral Radhakrishnan Hari Kumar is a serving flag officer in the Indian Navy. He is the 25th and current Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). Previously, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. INS Vagir (S25) is the fifth submarine of the first batch of six Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine based on the Scorpène class, designed by French naval defence and energy group Naval Group and manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited, an Indian shipyard in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Vice Admiral Elenjikal Chandy Kuruvila, PVSM, AVSM was a former Flag officer in the Indian Navy. He was the Fleet commander of the Western Fleet during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, for which he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. He later led the Southern Naval Area and then served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Mazagon Dock Limited.

Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, AVSM, VSM is a serving Flag officer in the Indian Navy. He currently serves as the Director General Naval Operations. He last served as the Director General Project Seabird. He earlier served as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and as the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at the Indian Naval Academy from March 2019 to January 2021. He was the commissioning commanding Officer of the Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata (D63).

INS <i>Vagsheer</i> (S26) Indian submarine

INS Vagsheer (S26) is the sixth submarine of the first batch of six Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine based on the Scorpène class, designed by French naval defence and energy group Naval Group and manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited, an Indian shipyard in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The ship was launched on 20 April 2022.

Rear Admiral Susheel Menon, VSM is a serving Flag officer in the Indian Navy. He currently serves as the Flag Officer Sea Training. He earlier commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (R33) from 2021 to 2023.
