Kingdonia uniflora is a species of perennial herb native to China. The plants have one leaf and a 100-millimetre (4-inch) flower stalk with a 8 mm (38 in) flower. [1]

It grows at high elevations in West and North China. [1] Most of the plants are found in western Yunnan. It is an endangered species. Analysis of its draft genome hinted that its restricted distribution and endangered status relates to the loss of specific gene families. [2]

Classification

Kingdonia is sometimes classified as the only genus in the family Kingdoniaceae [3] or as a member of the family Circaeasteraceae along with Circaeaster agrestis , specifically in the APG III system of classification. [4] [5] Other sources may classify Kingdonia in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. [1] In any case it is in the order Ranunculales.

The order is not currently accepted in the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III system of plant taxonomy, the most widely accepted system as molecular systematic studies have suggested that these families are not closely related to each other. The APG II system (2003) assigns them to several different orders: Hamamelidaceae and Cercidiphyllaceae to Saxifragales, Eupteleaceae to Ranunculales, Platanaceae to Proteales, and Myrothamnaceae to Gunnerales. Additional studies of the chloroplast genome have since confirmed that the families moved into the Saxigragales are closely related.

One of the traits is the absence of a vascular cambium, which is required to produce both xylem (wood) and phloem, which therefore are missing. Molecular synapomorphies are also known.

Ranunculales is an order of flowering plants. Of necessity it contains the family Ranunculaceae, the buttercup family, because the name of the order is based on the name of a genus in that family. Ranunculales belongs to a paraphyletic group known as the basal eudicots. It is the most basal clade in this group; in other words, it is sister to the remaining eudicots. Widely known members include poppies, barberries, hellebores, and buttercups.
