Kiribati have competed in five Commonwealth Games, making their debut in 1998 and attending every subsequent Games to date. [1] At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, David Katoatau won Kiribati's first medal, a gold, in men's weightlifting 105 kg. [2]

The others are Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales. Australian athletes competed for Australasia at the 1911 Festival of the Empire, the forerunner to the British Empire Games.
Kiribati competed in the Summer Olympic Games for the second time at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, following their debut appearance in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The country had intended to send a total of three athletes to the Games, competing in two sports: athletics and weightlifting. Female sprinter Kaitinano Mwemweata had to withdraw due to illness after contracting tuberculosis.
Nauru has competed in seven editions of the Commonwealth Games to date, beginning in 1990. This very small country, which had a population of just 9,872 at the time of the 2002 census, succeeded in winning at least one medals on each occasion, including at least one gold in their first four appearances.

The men's 105 kg weightlifting event was the second-heaviest men's event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, limiting competitors to a maximum of 105 kilograms of body mass. The competition took place on 30 July at 7:30 pm. The event took place at the Clyde Auditorium. By winning the gold medal, David Katoatau became the first medalist from Kiribati at the Commonwealth Games.
