Larry Harris Jr. is a game designer. [1]

Family

Harris is the son of Lawrence (Larry) Harris Sr., who was a U.S. infantryman in the Pacific Theater, participating in assaults in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines. [2] He is married to Katherine Harris, has four children, and three step-children.

Career

Larry Harris is most famous for creating the board game Axis & Allies , as well as all of its sequels. [3] During 1984, his first year at Milton Bradley, 13 games of his design were featured in the company's catalog. [4] This included the three initial titles in the Gamemaster series: Conquest of the Empire , Broadsides and Boarding Parties , and, Axis & Allies . [4] Other companies for which he has designed games include Mattel, Coleco, Parker Brothers, Hasbro Games Group, Hasbro Interactive, and Infogrames Interactive. [4] His other significant games include LionHeart and more.[ citation needed ] He has also assisted in the further development of Trivial Pursuit and Risk .[ citation needed ] Larry is also the inventor of Thin Ice . [3] Harris runs his own company, Harris Game Design. [4]

Four of his Axis & Allies games won Origins Awards, including the induction of the original game into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design's Hall of Fame in 1996. [5]

Harris has lived extensively in Europe and three years in Iran. [4] He speaks fluent French, is an Army veteran with five years' service, and has been known to pilot an ultralight. [4]

<i>Cosmic Encounter</i> Science fiction board game

Cosmic Encounter is a science fiction–themed strategy board game designed by "Future Pastimes" and originally published by Eon Games in 1977. In it, each player takes the role of a particular alien species, each with a unique power to bend or break one of the rules of the game, trying to establish control over the universe. The game was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame in 1997.

HeroQuest, is an adventure board game created by Milton Bradley in conjunction with the British company Games Workshop in 1989, and re-released in 2021. The game is loosely based around archetypes of fantasy role-playing games: the game itself was actually a game system, allowing the gamemaster to create dungeons of their own design using the provided game board, tiles, furnishings and figures. The game manual describes Morcar/Zargon as a former apprentice of Mentor, and the parchment text is read aloud from Mentor's perspective. Several expansions have been released, each adding new tiles, traps, artifacts, and monsters to the core system.

Greg Costikyan, sometimes known under the pseudonym "Designer X", is an American game designer and science fiction writer. Costikyan's career spans nearly all extant genres of gaming, including: hex-based wargames, role-playing games, boardgames, card games, computer games, online games, and mobile games. Several of his games have won Origins Awards. He co-founded Manifesto Games, now out of business, with Johnny Wilson in 2005.

The Origins Awards are American awards for outstanding work in the gaming industry. They are presented by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design at the Origins Game Fair on an annual basis for the previous year, so the 1979 awards were given at the 1980 Origins.

The Gamemaster Series of board games consists of five war simulation games released by the game company Milton Bradley beginning in 1984. The games were not developed "in-house" by Milton Bradley, with each game initially published in limited runs by smaller game publishers in the early 1980s before their rights were acquired by Milton Bradley. Despite this, some modern reissues of these games refer to the Milton Bradley versions as the "first edition" of each game.

Broadsides and Boarding Parties is a board game published by Milton Bradley in 1984 as part of their Gamemaster series. It was the 3rd in the series of games that are all designed by Larry Harris. It is the only game of that series to feature a two player game, Broadsides and Boarding Parties is a duel between a Spanish galleon and a pirate ship. Players take turns moving their ship and firing at the other ship to sink her. If the ships collide then players may take boarding parties onto the other ship to try to win.
