Leinster Lightning is an Irish inter-provincial cricket team. They participate in the Inter-Provincial Championship, Interprovincial One-Day Trophy and Interprovincial Twenty20 Cup.
The team is based in Dublin and is managed by Cricket Leinster.
In 2013, Cricket Ireland formed the three-day Interprovincial Championship, Cup and Trophy featuring teams from Leinster, the NCU and the North West. The Leinster team is known as Leinster Lightning.
In January 2015, Ted Williamson was announced as the new head coach, taking over at the helm from Trent Johnston. [1] Under his coaching, Leinster Lightning took a clean-sweep of trophies in the 2015 and 2016 seasons before he stepped down from the position. [2]
Up to and including the 2016 Inter-Provincial Championship, the matches were not given first-class status. However, at an International Cricket Council meeting in October 2016, first-class status was awarded to all future matches. [3] [4]
In 2019, Nigel Jones was appointed to the role of Head Coach and Pathway Manager. [5] Following the 2019 season the Inter-Provincial Championship was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to return. [6]
In the history of the Inter-provincial series, Lightning have won 21 of the available 29 trophies. [7]
2023 was the first season in which the team failed to win at least one competition.

Cricket in Ireland is governed by Cricket Ireland, which maintains the Ireland men's and women's cricket teams. Like several other sports in Ireland, cricket is organised on an all-Ireland basis. Following the team's success in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, the sport's popularity increased in Ireland. The country was, until 2017, an associate member of the International Cricket Council and played in tournaments like the World Cricket League and ICC Intercontinental Cup, which are qualifying rounds for associate teams for the Cricket World Cup and ICC World Twenty20. Ireland qualified for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, the 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2010 ICC World Twenty20. In the 2011 World Cup, they beat England in the group matches.
The Inter-Provincial Championship is a three-day cricket tournament in Ireland, played between regional teams drawn from three of Ireland's five provincial unions. It parallels first-class cricket tournaments in other countries such as the County Championship of England and the Sheffield Shield of Australia. The tournament was held for the first time in 2013 across venues in Ireland.
The Inter-Provincial Cup is a limited-overs cricket tournament in Ireland between the four leading cricketing provinces of Ireland. The tournament was held for the first time in 2013 across venues in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Peter Karl David Chase is an Irish cricketer who played for Durham County Cricket Club. He is a right-arm medium-fast bowler who also bats right handed. In December 2018, he was one of nineteen players to be awarded a central contract by Cricket Ireland for the 2019 season. In June 2022, Chase retired from international cricket.

The 2017 Inter-Provincial Trophy was the fifth edition of the Inter-Provincial Trophy, a Twenty20 cricket competition played in Ireland. It was held from 26 May to 11 August 2017. It was the first edition of the competition to be played with full Twenty20 status, following the outcome of a meeting by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in October 2016. In April 2017, Cricket Ireland approved the participation of a fourth team, Munster Reds, for the tournament. Leinster Lightning won the tournament, after beating Munster Reds by five wickets in the final round of fixtures.

It was the third edition of the competition to be played with full Twenty20 status. The competition was split into two halves, each branded as a T20 Festival. The first half was played in June, and the second half was played in August. Leinster Lightning were the defending champions.

On 25 March 2021, Cricket Ireland confirmed the fixtures for the tournament. On 9 April 2021, Cricket Ireland announced the revised fixtures for the tournament, with number of matches increased from 12 to 18. Leinster Lightning were the defending champions.
