Liggett is an unincorporated community in Boulder County, Colorado, United States. [1] It is to the northwest of Lafayette.

Description

Liggett is mostly rural grassland, with a few buildings. Nearby are two lakes, Boulder Creek, and a former Union Pacific rail line currently owned by the Regional Transportation District. Directly to the west of Liggett is 95th Street, heading south to Lafayette and north to Longmont. A second road, Valmont Road, terminates at 95th Street and heads west to Boulder.

History

Liggett was established prior to 1904, and was originally known as White Rock. The name was changed to Liggett sometime between 1945 and 1957. [3] The railway was built through the area in the early 1870s by the Denver & Boulder Valley Railroad, and connected Boulder to Brighton. [4]

The rail line was acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad via a merger in 1898, and later bought by the Regional Transportation District in 2009. [5]

Name

The origin is not known for certain, but the community is possibly named after Liggett, Indiana.

Denver Union Station Train station in Denver

Denver Union Station is the main railway station and central transportation hub in Denver, Colorado. It is located at 17th and Wynkoop Streets in the present-day LoDo district and includes the historic station house, a modern open-air train shed, a 22-gate underground bus station, and light rail station. A station was first opened on the site on June 1, 1881, but burned down in 1894. The current structure was erected in two stages, with an enlarged central portion completed in 1914.

The western terminus of Baseline Road is at Flagstaff Mountain in the City of Boulder Mountain Parks. The eastern terminus is at 16800 Watkins Road, about 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Lochbuie on the boundary between Adams and Weld Counties. The total length of Baseline Road is approximately 38 miles (61 km), all of which is within the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area in Colorado. Baseline Road runs almost exactly along the 40th line of latitude.

Boulder station

The Boulder station is a retired train depot in Boulder, Colorado. It was originally built in 1890 in downtown Boulder to serve as a depot for the Union Pacific railroad. The depot was built in a modified Richardson Romanesque style from native Boulder County stone. The depot operated as a train station at its original location until 1957, when a new depot opened and replaced it.
