Massachusetts is divided into five distinct numbering plan areas (NPAs), which are served by nine area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), [1] organized as four overlay complexes and a single-area code NPA.

Eastern Massachusetts has area codes 339, 351, 508, 617, 774, 781, 857, and 978. [2] Western Massachusetts has area code 413. [2]

The numbering plan areas are organized into two local access and transport areas (LATAs): 126 comprises the western part, and 128 covers the central and eastern parts. [3]

The most-populous city of area code 413 is Springfield. 413 also includes Great Barrington, Greenfield, North Adams, Northampton and Pittsfield. Vernon, Centralia, Herrin, Salem, Metropolis, Fairview Heights, Collinsville, and Granite City. Area code 618 was one of the original North American area codes created in 1947, and 730 was added to the plan area to form an overlay complex to satisfy the need for more telephone numbers in the region. The current population of the 618/730 area code is 1,288,816 people. It encompasses approximately 15,458 square mile ; and has a population density of 83.38 people per square mile.

In the administration of the North American Numbering Plan, central office code protection is a numbering policy for maintaining local seven-digit dialing in communities that extend on both sides of the boundary line between multiple numbering plan areas (NPAs), such as in cross-border towns on state lines. Code protection prevents the use of the same telephone number on both sides by not assigning the same central office code of one NPA in the adjacent NPA.
