From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism.

As his second presidential term is supposed to end in April, he cancelled the elections scheduled for February 25, 2024. The Senegalese opposition called him "putchist" following his decision to cancel presidential election and to remain in power illegally.

Descended from a Serer family through his mother from the line of Matar Sène, Ousmane Sembène was particularly drawn to Serer religious festivals especially the Tuur festival.
