The competition started on 23 August 2008 and concluded on 13 May 2009 with the final, held at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia, in which Barcelona lifted the trophy for the 25th time in their history with a 4–1 victory over Athletic Bilbao, who qualified for the third qualifying round of the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League. The defending cup holders were Valencia, but they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The hospital has specialist facilities which not only serve Tenerife but the surrounding Canary Islands.

"Bajada" is the shortened version of the Fiestas de la Bajada which is a festival which takes place in several places in the Canary Islands. Bajada is Spanish for "bringing down", and means the bringing of a patron saint's statue from its normal place in a chapel to be celebrated by the people.

The hospital has specialist facilities which not only serve Tenerife but the surrounding Canary Islands. The hospital adopted the name of the patron saint of the Canary Islands, the Virgin of Candelaria. It is the largest hospital complex in the Canary Islands.

Our Lady of the Forsaken is a Catholic invocation of the Virgin Mary. She is the patroness of Valencia and one of seven patrons of the Autonomous communities of Spain. She appears with a lily in one hand and in the other, she carries the baby Jesus who bears the cross in his arms. Her posture is characterized by a slight forward tilt, and hence, she is known affectionately as the Geperudeta (hunchback) of València. Her image is housed in the 'Basilica de la Mare de Déu dels Desamparats'.
