A dome is a self-supporting structural element of architecture that resembles the hollow upper half of a sphere.

Contents

Every dome in the world which was the largest (by diameter) dome of its time is listed below.

Notes:

  1. Each structure is only described in detail one time on this page (the appearance closest to the top of the page), even if it appears in multiple lists. A link to the row where the structure is described in detail is provided.
  2. The dimensions given are inner diameters (also called inside diameters, or clear spans), meaning the thickness of the dome itself is not included. If the inner diameter of a dome is not available, a footnote follows the structure's name.
  3. If a dome has an elliptical rather than circular shape, the dome's shorter dimension (i.e. width) is used for ranking, and, contra convention, its dimensions are listed as width × length, rather than length × width.
  4. If the structure is part of a well-known complex of buildings, the name of the entire site is listed first, with the name of the dome structure itself listed in small text below.
  5. These lists exclude structures that are not self-supporting, such as The O2 in London which is 365 m (1,200 ft) in diameter but is supported by masts.
  6. The name of a structure used is the name it had when it was constructed or first opened. This is particularly relevant regarding stadiums.

La Géode is a mirror-finished geodesic dome that holds an Omnimax theatre in Parc de la Villette at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, France.

Buro Happold Limited is a British professional services firm that provides engineering consultancy, design, planning, project management, and consulting services for buildings, infrastructure, and the environment. It was founded in Bath, Somerset, in 1976 by Sir Edmund Happold when he took up a post at the University of Bath as Professor of Architecture and Engineering Design.

The Louisiana Superdome was used as a "shelter of last resort" for those in New Orleans unable to evacuate from the city when Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Construction of Assembly Hall (Champaign)</span>

The construction of State Farm Center, originally known as the Assembly Hall, at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign consisted of building a huge indoor arena with a 400-foot-diameter (120 m) concrete dome whose center height is 125 feet (38 m) above the center floor, and which weighs 10 million pounds. The building is considered an engineering marvel because of the unique method used to build the concrete roof. State Farm Center, the first-ever concrete dome arena, hosts the campus's teams in men's and women's basketball, numerous concerts and other events. It holds sentimental value for numerous alumni and fans alike and attracts attention for its design and construction. The construction of the Assembly Hall was conceived to provide UIUC with needed space for ceremonies and athletic events. The university’s population had outgrown the largest building on campus at that time, the Auditorium, and desired one building that could hold the entire university class. The design of the new building, by Max Abramovitz, called for the construction of one of the world’s largest edge-supported structure. The assembly hall was completed in 1963, and was dedicated on Honors Day, Friday May 3.

David H. Geiger was an American engineer who invented the air-supported fabric roof system that at the time of his death was in use at almost half the domed stadiums in the world.
