Pumped-storage hydroelectricity Type of electric energy storage system using two reservoirs of water connected with a pump and a turbine

Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH), or pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES), is a type of hydroelectric energy storage used by electric power systems for load balancing. The method stores energy in the form of gravitational potential energy of water, pumped from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation. Low-cost surplus off-peak electric power is typically used to run the pumps. During periods of high electrical demand, the stored water is released through turbines to produce electric power. Although the losses of the pumping process make the plant a net consumer of energy overall, the system increases revenue by selling more electricity during periods of peak demand, when electricity prices are highest. If the upper lake collects significant rainfall or is fed by a river then the plant may be a net energy producer in the manner of a traditional hydroelectric plant.

Hydroelectricity Electricity generated by hydropower

Hydroelectricity, or hydroelectric power, is electricity produced from hydropower. In 2020 hydropower generated one sixth of the world's electricity, almost 4500 TWh, which was more than all other renewables combined and also more than nuclear power.

Enguri Dam Dam in Tsalenjikha, Samegrelo

The Enguri Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Enguri River in Tsalenjikha, Georgia. Currently it is the world's second highest concrete arch dam with a height of 271.5 metres (891 ft). It is located north of the town Jvari. It is part of the Enguri hydroelectric power station (HES) which is partially located in Abkhazia.

Karakaya Dam Dam in Euphrates, Turkey

The Karakaya Dam is one of the 21 dams of the Southeastern Anatolia Project of Turkey, built on the Euphrates River and completed in 1987. The hydroelectric dam generates power with six units of 300 MW, totalling the installed capacity to 1,800 MW.

The Mount Stuart Power Station is a power station located in Stuart, Townsville, Australia. The station runs on kerosene with three gas turbines that generate a combined capacity of 414 MW of electricity. Mount Stuart was commissioned in December 1998, and operates as a peaking plant. It currently runs on kerosene, but can be converted to natural gas.

The Xiaolangdi Dam is a dam in Jiyuan, Henan Province, China, and impounds the Yellow River. The facility is located about 20 km to the northwest of Luoyang. It has a total installed capacity of 1,836 MW and generates up to 5.1 TWh annually with the help of six 306 MW turbines. The dam stands 154 m (505 ft) tall and 1,317 m (4,321 ft) wide. It cost US$3.5 billion to construct.

Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station Dam in Serbia, Romania

The Iron Gate I Hydroelectric Power Station is the largest dam on the Danube river and one of the largest hydro power plants in Europe. It is located on the Iron Gate gorge, between Romania and Serbia.

Mossyrock Dam Dam in Washington state

Mossyrock Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Cowlitz River near Mossyrock in Lewis County, Washington. The reservoir created by the dam is called Riffe Lake and the primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric production while flood control is secondary. The dam is the tallest in Washington State and its hydroelectric power station supplies 40% of Tacoma Power's electricity.

Seven Mile Dam is a concrete gravity-type hydroelectric dam on the Pend d'Oreille River 15 km SE of Trail, 18 km downstream from Boundary Dam and 9 km upstream from Waneta Dam in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The power plant has a capacity of 848 MW and generates 3200 GWh per year. The May, June and early July flow of the river in most years, is greater than the plants capacity. During these times water is spilled, not used to generate power. The reservoir is 420 ha, which includes 170 ha of flooded river channel. Under the Canal Plant Agreement operations are coordinated with Waneta Dam.

Edea Hydroelectric Power Station Hydroelectric power plant of the Sanaga River in Edéa, Cameroon

The Edea Power Station is a hydroelectric power plant of the Sanaga River near Edéa in Cameroon. It has a power generating capacity of 264 megawatts (354,000 hp) enough to power over 136,600 homes. Nearly 60% of the power goes to the aluminum smelter.

The Song Loulou Power Station is a hydroelectric power plant of the Sanaga River in Cameroon. It has a power generating capacity of 384 megawatts (515,000 hp) enough to power over 257,100 homes. The Song Loulou power station is built upstream of another power station; the Edea power station. Unlike the Edea power station that mainly power the aluminum smelter located next to it, the Song Loulou power station mainly powers homes and other industrial plants in the South of the country.

Solar power in Alaska Overview of solar power in the U.S. state of Alaska

Solar power in Alaska has been primarily used in remote locations, such as the Nenana Teen Center near Fairbanks, where long summer days provide most of the electricity generated. In 2015, Alaska ranked 45th in installed solar among U.S. states. Rooftop solar panels could provide 23% of all electricity used in Alaska. Net metering is available for PV systems up to 25 kW but is limited to 1.5% of average demand. IREC best practices, based on experience, recommends no limits to net metering, individual or aggregate, and perpetual roll over of kWh credits.
